How to build a Modern Natural Pool without Mud

I got to experience one of the most divine pristine swimming experiences in what seems to be a modern pool at first. When you look at it closer with it’s rock pool waterfalls and wetlands area, you can see the tiny shrimps cleaning the water hidden away, and small fish hiding in the roots.
Norm vant Hoff from Bali Eco Lodge talks through the 3 main things to think when considering creating your modern natural pool:
1. Aeration
2. Filteration
3. Circulation
He also shares about the ideas of Viktor Schauberger and recommends looking into his ideas and research on water and how it moves and revitalises.
There really is no reason for us to have any pools as chemical pools anymore when we can have modern pools that revitalise our cells and truly are a blessing to swim in!

You can certainly tell by the way this man talks that he has not wasted his time like most of us(myself included)worrying about things in life that aren’t important,He really seems to know quite a lot about water,At one point he spoke of man that he gained information from and it seems he took that knowledge and applied it in a very useful and beautiful way!!Im completely blown away by the simplicity but yet technicality of this!!I want to build a pool in my backyard(not as grand)but without the use of concrete etc,Wish me luck!!

I think they're really underestimating just how many people absolutely would love to swim with fish and frogs and whatnot. As long as the water is clean and clear like that, that's exactly what most people would want. It's different than swimming in a normal pool, and people love a change in pace/something new. If you had some bigger fish (nothing capable of harming people like a pike or catfish obviously) for people to swim with, I'd bet that'd only increase the interest.

Would love to do this, but harder in a climate where the ground freezes solid every winter...plus we don't have the money to get an excavator, cement, etc., So we got a cheap above ground pool instead, use a sand filter and salt water system. The pool is easily drained, disassembled, and stored away for cold weather. Great if you have money to build yourself a natural pool like that.

@@ThrivingwithNature Yes, very fast moving water keeps moving in winter, but also sometimes gets ice over it--like ice caves with flowing water inside--beautiful, but can't imagine keeping a man-made system going in such cold temps--also, I'm not the ice man and don't need to swim until summer. And...money. If I can't build and maintain it on a tight budget, it doesn't get built...but I admire all these lovely pools that others build! I think I'll work on natural hot tubs for Northern climates! 🙂

Hi Angela, this is definitely tropical and very humid so a bit different from desert. If there are any natural springs or water around (not sure as it’s a desert) I would look at what plants are around there… I know the main plant used for filtration here was Vetiver Grass which may also be ok in that climate as it’s sturdy, but I’m not 100% sure. Amazing! Thanks for sharing! Can you please tell us how much power monthly (KWh) is required to run this wonder? Thanks

Hi @jfbaro2 you are welcome. Essentially you need a pump that can turn over the volume of your pool in a 24hour period. So you can work out what pump you need for that and then work out the power for that :) we go through all this in the online MasterClass launching very soon!

Hi- how long did ur water take to clear up? We just finished building our pool and are in the "cloudy" phase - hoping it won't last maybe more than a few weeks? Also- did you add any beneficial bacteria to your pool? Thanks!

Hi Michelle, sorry for the delay in getting back to you! What specifically would you like to know? I can ask Norm, otherwise you can check out his KZread Channel Bali Eco Lodge as I believe they are going to be releasing another video on their pool soon!

Hi Michelle, I finally got to chat to Norm... The pool base is “Batu sikat” (brushed pebbles). There are 2 pumps - one for the wetlands that only goes occassionaly and a small pump that goes more often for the waterfall. If you want more information, you can contact Norm at the Bali Eco Lodge www.BaliEcolodge.com
