How to Build a Heavy Duty Mailbox Post

I had to replace the old 4x4 mailbox stand in my front yard and wanted something nice, but even more heavy duty.
This video shows how I built my mailbox stand out of 6X6 pressure treated posts.

Hello Brian, thanks for the video. this is precisely what I’m looking to make for my new mailbox. Do you mind specifying a few things for me? (I’m a newbie at wood and doing a diy) 1. What is the depth of the slots you cut in the pieces to make is flush? 2. What size spade drill 3. What size boring drill 4. Which bolts did you use? Thanks.

I think you need a new wheelbarrow.

I am getting ready to do this with an old barn beam thanks for the video... did you have any trouble from the postmaster general about your 6 inch post?

Hi: Thank you for your feedback. No trouble from the mailman at all. His only concern was that it be a height that he could reach it. Aside from that, I think he appreciates how sturdy this is. Good luck with your project. An old barn beam sounds like it will make a great post.

Great job. The through bolts and nuts are a great idea. If you want a uniform look and dont want the nuts you can use lag bolts and diagonally stagger them from each side. Can also use lag bolts that are shorter than the width and glue in lag bolt plugs for the other side.

I see this type of post frequently with a brace (diagonal) piece running from the vertical to the horizontal (sorry, not a woodworker and don't recall the technical name for this brace). Is there a reason yours did not need that piece? Like the look of a 6x6 post. Definitely appears more sound than a 4x4.

I didn't need the brace due to the 6X6 construction being sufficient to hold the weight of the mailbox plus anything you'd reasonably place inside of it. :) What's more, the 6" wide board makes a much more stable platform to mount the box to. Thank you for your comment. I hope your project works out well.

Also called a gusset, but like Brian said, a 6*6 is plenty beefy especially if your horizontal piece isn't very long
