    Was just about to put up some lights! They make a pvc cutter, looks like pliers with a blade on each side, and they ratchet. Squeeze the thing like 3 times and cut the piece, cut the whole pipe in under 2 minutes.

    You did a great job of creating a grow light stand. For those people who aren't as flexible to lower themselves to the floor, they could make the stand taller and put a small table under the stand for easy access to the seedlings. I looked up your grow light on Amazon. Even though it's full spectrum, lumens aren't listed and it's only 2900K, which isn't daylight spectrum. The Kelvin rating should be in the 5500-6500 range to mimic full daylight brightness. Lumens should be a minimum of 5000. Last year, I setup a grow station for the first time in my house. I bought LED shop lights that are 5500 lumens with a 6000K daylight rating. Luckily, I found a wire metal shelving unit on sale at Sam's Club for only $35. I put 2 lights per shelf, used only 2 of the 4 shelves. Used s-hooks and chains to lower and raise the lights, Very easy to do. My seedlings grew very well. A couple of my tomato plants even formed fruit before I transplanted them. I was thrilled with the growing success of my plants using the shop lights. Hope you have successful growth with your lights.

    I've been starting seeds in my shop for years in the first part of January. I live in Central California where our winter months get very cold and fog. I use heat mats with no light until the second day the seeds pop. I then let them breathe uncovered with a light for the next 7 days or so. 12 hours on, 12 hours off with heat mat still on. I then use my Palua bio green heat fan 24/7 for about a month. I learned from trial and error to never use potting soil for seedlings(loaded with gnat eggs), etc. I use fresh airtight bags of Jiffy seed starter and always have success. Keep up the great content!

    It’s very basic and affordable. It’s a great beginner’s setup, or for someone who only needs to start 150-200 seedlings at a time. If you need to start 500-1000+, you may want to invest in one of those shelving unit builds, but I do not have the space for that. Way too big and bulky. What’s nice about this is it’ll break down into a small box for storage once it’s spring.

    I improvised. I`m a musician/singer so I have microphone stands, and I have a telescope, binocular, and camera tripods, plus an 8 feet tall lamp stand that came with my camper. So I use bulbs in clip on lamp things. I have various strength LED ones to grow food inside and I use supplemental lights on my hydro bucket tomatoes/peppers/cucumbers/cabbage etc under the edge of my steel camper carport style roof to keep direct rain off them. I may try a fig this way or in a container but with 16 hours of light per day to see what happens.

    Also @themillennialgardener - I use very similar lights in my three-tier hydro system. above each grow section... zip tie the light tubes to a piece of 1/2" rigid foam insulation so I can get four led tubes combined. Also I spray glue mylar to the rigid foam to get extra reflection.

Now if you would be so kind as to instruct us on the use of lights for growing our seedlings, like when to start the lights, how long to use them each day, how to quit using them without setting our plants back. Great video! Don't blame Dale for not liking his socks. Dogs aren't made for wearing footwear!

    The lights should be set about 3 inches above the seedlings. You’ll need to gradually raise them as the seedlings grow. You may have to raise them slightly each day. I have my lights on a programmable timer. I linked to the WiFi timer in the video description. I have it set to come on at 7AM and turn off at 9PM. Lights are not as intense as the sun, so you need to go longer on the time.

    @@TheMillennialGardener Absolutely, but what I’m saying is if you only have one set of grow lights and you start tomatoes now, then in a month I start some lettuce I’d want the lettuce closer to the light, so I’d put them on a book or two to get them closer to the light and the taller tomatoes could stay on the shelf.

    It seems to be a pretty good value. It definitely isn’t top of the line, but it did what it was supposed to do. My first round of seedlings germinated fine and are now out in my sunroom. If you can’t fit a 10’ pipe in your hatchback Lowe’s has 5’ lengths You can cut 4’, 6”, 6” Then on number two cut 2’, 2’, 6”, 6” I don’t want to seem like I’m saying something everyone knows. That’s the kind of thing that would make me need to draw pictures while I’m standing in the aisle at Lowe’s And PVC cutters are worth it!

    You can simply cut the pipe at 4ft. Then, the 4ft piece and 6 ft piece will fit easily in any vehicle. I used to lay the pipe down along the passenger's size foot area and wedge it in between the passenger's seat and the door. It'll fit right in there.

    You already have tomato seeds started? Shoot! I'm behind... I'm in Georgia (8a) and I'm never sure when I should start my seeds. I started my onions too soon, I think (early Dec), cause they're all up and about 4" tall or so already. Not sure when to plant (I think March 1), but that's still a month and a half away. I have broccoli outside that's from the fall and so far they've survived (in a sunny but protected spot). What else have you got started? Oh, BTW, if people are looking for 'regular fluorescent' lights to use as grow lights, I use lights that are 6500 Kelvin, 1600 lumens (daylight bulbs). Amazon has the screw in types and HD has the shop fixture types.

  • @TheMillennialGardener

    @TheMillennialGardener

    The tomatoes I started are experimental. They will be transplanted out in February under cover just to see what happens. I don't start my *actual* tomatoes for spring until the first week of February with a goal to transplant them out either last week of March or first week of April, weather dependent. I would personally recommend avoiding fluorescent lights because of the heat they give off, the energy costs, the lack of longevity and the unattractive light they produce, but that's my opinion.

  • @TheMillennialGardener

    @TheMillennialGardener

    6 ай бұрын

    It's for using a shade cloth. The shade cloth is adequate for blocking light rain. It is not meant to be used for plastic. Plastic catches way too much wind, and it isn't possible to secure greenhouse plastic on such a tunnel structure. It works with shade cloth, because shade cloth lets wind through thanks to the mesh design, so the amount of wind stress is a small fraction of greenhouse plastic. If you need greenhouse plastic, you will have to build a real high tunnel made of steel that is designed to take extreme wind stress.

    Needed? No. These are specifically designed for growing. Everything germinated and grew fine, and my first round of seedlings were moved into my sunroom and are plenty happy. There is a lot of debate out there what's best if you're going to build your own set with shop lights, but these are specifically designed for growing seedlings while not harming your eyes with "ugly" light.

    Theres mutliple Kelvin options on the light you linked. Whats best to be used? I was going to get one of the Barrina 6x pack of 4' lights so that way I could have mutliple sheleves lit for my seedlings, but I'm so confused by how many factors everyone mentions. How do you know what is best for your buck?

  • @TheMillennialGardener

    @TheMillennialGardener

    6 ай бұрын

    The one I used is Warm White, which is where the direct link defaults to. I use warm white, because it is easy on the eyes. I do not want some antiseptic high-K light, or even worse, a red-violet light, in my office. The warm white worked just great for my first round of seedlings. If you have some basement grow-lamp setup where you'll rarely be, you can use a higher-K light, but if you're going to expose your eyes to it regularly, they're rough. I can't have that type of light in a place I'm located hours a day.

    When I did this I used a metal shelf from Amazon got 4 rows for plants put fans and lights on each roll it was cheaper then the pipe in my area. That pipe in some areas is really expensive

  • @TheMillennialGardener

    @TheMillennialGardener

    6 ай бұрын

    The problem with the shelves is the room they take up. You need to dedicate a large space, and then what do you do with the shelving once you're done starting seedlings? Do you go through the process of taking it all apart to store it somewhere, then you have to put it back together again next season? Or do you just leave it up and stare at the ugly shelf all year? That's what I'm trying to avoid. This will break down in 60 seconds and I'll be able to tuck it away in a small box, then re-assemble in 2 minutes next season. I refuse to use a shelving unit, because my house is small and we don't have basements here due to the water table.

    I prefer the full spectrum lights. Plants only need red light and violet light to grow, but it is painful on the eyes. Full spectrum gives them more than they need but makes it pleasing to your eyes. The warm white is the best for human eye comfort, so that’s what I bought and it works fine.

  • @debraemke3828
    @debraemke38286 ай бұрын

    Are you using the oscillating fan because the lights are too hot for the plants. I did hear you say build up strength in the stem but I also saw someone’s remark on Amazon that the lights are hot

  • @TheMillennialGardener

    @TheMillennialGardener

    6 ай бұрын

    No. The oscillating fan, on low for just a few hours a day, simulates a light breeze and causes the seedlings to react by thickening up to resist wind. It's one of the secrets to get stockier, stronger seedlings. These are LED lights, so they give off basically no warmth.
