How to Build a Ground Level Deck (Father & Son Project)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Here is one way (of many) to build a ground level deck. My son and I built this in a four day period. Simple, easy, and practical!
Here is a newer video of what this deck looks 3 years and 800,000 views later. Some great modifications have been added:

    Good stuff guys. I’d give everything I own to be able to perform a project like this with my late father. Keep enjoying time with each other. Who cares if the deck rots or sags? At least you have each other’s help to build another one if it happens. 👍

    I relate to what you are saying. I would do many more things with my dad if he were still alive. SO: since I cannot, I am doing many things with my son. Just two weeks ago we went snorkeling in the Florida Keys. Will probably go back next summer.

    Getting old now but still look back with a smile and treasure father/son projects. I see some comments querying the gap between the decking and the house ... but its thoughtful planning on their part (allows planting of a shrub border that in time will wonderfully soften the look of the project and also nicely add a sense of maturity to the abuttment of the decking to the house). Thanks for sharing the video; if it encourages other fathers and sons to have a go at a major project together then further blessings will flow and be long remembered.

    Your deck looks great! I'm going to build one myself at the end of a barn lean-to. I got lots of benefit from comments here too but will probably build one just like you and your son did. The little spot for the grill is really neat , out of the way. I can just see your family lounging in those chairs on a sunny day soaking in the sun! I'm going to put those long boards on the ground after the weed cloth and then put decking boards on top as the top surface from an old barn I'm tearing down to repurpose them to honor the 100 year old barn that is falling down. My ground is mostly sand and rock so should be very sturdy. An old river bed here in Montana.Thank you so much for this video and being so kind to share it. As you can tell, I'm not a builder but my husband was a great one. Lost him to an accident 4 years ago but he is with me in spirit coaching me on as a wonderful husband does for his wife. God Bless and many years of enjoyment making memories on your deck.

    Built a 15ft tall 4×8 deer stand in a clear cut with freshly planted pines 8yrs ago. Used 4x4 post set in ground 3ft. Dug it up last month to move it to the logging rd bc the pines had grown too tall to see over. The 4x4 post were as good as the day it was built. No rot at all. Great job and thanks for sharing 👍👍👊

    Looks nice. I just have a few recommendations for the next one. Place patio blocks throughout under to distribute any weight and also when screwing down the deck boards it is common to stand a yard stick on its edge between the deck boards. This gives space for water to drain through,air to circulate, and room for any dirt not to clog up the cracks.

    I did something this inside of a pole barn for a floor to put some shop tools on. Part of the floor I put down a vapor barrier and . The decking is basically on the ground. Not really air circulation underneath. Although used treated material, they are rotting due to no airflow and moisture build up. (Less than 2 years ). I have to redo the all floor over . Next time Im raising the floor up some and a total vapor barrier under the entire floor.

    I think landscape fabric would have been a better idea. The heavy plastic is not permeable and rain water will puddle up under your deck and create more moisture. Thanks for the video, nice job and good luck!

    You probably should have raised it a bit higher and notched your posts so your rim joists could rest on them. Also, your rim joists should've been treated, and I would've added another post in the middle of the joists, that floor will sag after time. But glad you guys could do that together, family is important, you never know when you're going to see them again! 👊

    Love ground level decks, thinking of extending ours a bit this summer. See if my ten year old can manage it. Curious is the lumber rated for ground contact? I noticed your initial runs had direct contact with the ground, how to avoid moisture being a problem down the road? Thanks!

  • @SStewartBibleProduction

    @SStewartBibleProduction

    5 жыл бұрын

    All the lumber used is treated lumber to protect it from moisture; And under the deck we rolled out heavy black plastic to kill the grass; the key is Treated Lumber; do more web checked and maybe read some about it before you build so you know for sure.

    @@SStewartBibleProductionhere are different types of treated lumber. Generally speaking 2x6" are NOT rated for ground contact which means your deck might rot out faster, especially since there is no ventilation under it. Home depot's website does offer ground contact 2x6, but Lowes does not. Strange but true. Anything 2x8" or thicker is typicaly ground rated, which means they put more poison in the wood so it will not rot as easily.
