    Just a heads up - pond pebbles/river rock retain moisture and will explode due to the heat in a fire pit. The other rocks were on point. Pond Pebbles would have been great around the outside of the firepit on top of the sand.

    @@davonnacarter1445 there is material out there called paver base that could be used as a base. For the rock inside the pit where the logs rest, you can use gravel, stone, pea pebbles, just not river rock.

    Very helpful video! I also liked the positive helpful comments that some people had, such as the advice about maybe not using pond pebbles/river rock since he states they retain moisture. We're all learning here, right? Great video, and great comments from viewers, thanks to all! My husband and I are in the process of tackling this same task for our backyard. Can't wait, we CAN do it!

    Nice video. Great to see your kids helped. Tips for anyone watching this video that I wish I knew when I built ours: Have an air supply pipe at the base of the firepit to help reduce smoke. You'll burn wood a bit faster but the hotter fire will reduce smoke blowing on whoever is downwind. Keep the walls of the firepit lower to enable you to comfortably use it to prop your feet if desired. Pea gravel is less messy than sand. Nice looking job!

    Oh thank you! I'm so glad it was inspiring. 😊 The drainage hole seemed to work great, we had no issues there. We used it several times since installing it and its been great. The fire pit itself is perfect but the seating area has been annoying with grass and weeds still growing through even after using weed killer. I'll have to figure out something for that when spring comes. I'll probably do an update video of revamping that and clearing it out after all this snow we have melts.

    How many inches did you dig into the ground for the base of the pit?

  • @RandomBitesofaSweetLife

    @RandomBitesofaSweetLife

    If I'm remembering correctly it was just a few inches. Maybe 3 or 4 I think. I remember not wanting it to be too low because I wanted the height of the fire pit to be as high as possible.

    How did it work out for you having that much rock in the firepit? Just seems a little high and not enough room for too much wood to burn.

    It's fine at this height so far. We don't pile the sticks so high.

    It definitely doesn’t have to be leveled because depending on the weather.. the ground would grow, soak in water & cause it to sink or move around.. not much but it will. Great job tho

    We didn't go all the way up but if you have a fire pit with a ring in it like this one, you do have to cover the bottom half of the ring because you don't want the fire to burn against the firepit bricks.

    Thank you! I’m gonna do an update video on how things look in the coming spring/summer. The weeds were an issue at first but after a second pulling and a little spray, I think we have them under control now. I haven’t seen any muddy areas but thanks for the warning.

    Its unfortunate you chose not to use mortar or some other sort of adhesive. One day you'll look out and the pit will be in shambles with random bricks laying about.

    I'm not sure how that would happen because these bricks are so heavy. It's been holding up nicely so far. I just didn't want it to be permanent. I want the option to repurpose it if I want to one day.
