how do you get the compost out of the burried barrels?

Solid waste compost can be used on non-edible plants and trees. Liquid waste is almost sterile and when diluted makes an excellent fertilizer (good source of nitrogen). When it's not diluted, it can be used as a weed killer.

Composting ones poo might seem gross and smelly, but it isn't. It is also far cheaper than paying to send your poo to a waste treatment facility to recycle the water. Also cheaper than installing all the plumbing/septic system. Plumbers are expensive, too. Not flushing until you have stink pickles saves water, but this save waaay more. Also less energy is used to treat the poo; a waste facility uses a lot of energy and fuels. Pathogens do not exist in composted poo.

Nice simple design David. Since there's no transfer of the waste until the drum is full, what do you use for odor control? Sawdust...lime, etc...?

We use peat moss. It works well once you cover the waste.

He mentions an introduction a couple of times in this video; might answer some of the questions re: microbes and odor.
