    Just to answer some questions: The inside of the console is not done, I have some cool ideas for it but I need to run the ideas past the officer. Next, The lid needs to be fixed. I did not account for the extra foam on the side, just the wood thickness so it looks "off" which is why I think some of you think it looks "ugly". Finally, I appreciate the feedback and hope you guys enjoyed the video!

    For the inside, I think if you used the plastic that you used around the switches and form an inner box that would cover the vinyl and staples. This would work well on the inside of the box lid too. Maybe use black countersink screws. You might even be able to hide the hinge this way. Failing that, you could use very thin carpet (we call it office carpet, dunno what they call it where you are) glued to the inside.

    Sometimes good enough is good enough! It's not a show car! I'm gonna try to get mine to look a little better, use a cloth backed vinyl and a heat gun. If I don't like it, THEN I'll spend the $250 and give mine to my kid for his jeep. If I like it, I'll help him build one too! I reupholstered the convertible top on my '57 Tbird (not a show quality car but a driver). Used a how to video I bought and it turned out good enough for me. Saved a ton of money and allowed for shrinkage. The pro's would have gotten a nicer fit but it wouldn't have lasted once the vinyl started shrinking. Happened to my dad back in the day had he had to redo his himself!

    Usually in North America we have ours there too! But with police cars, they relocate the gear stick to the dash. But in minivans and some trucks, they are on the dash from the factory. Example, My neighbor bought a retired police ford explorer from 2014 and the gear stick was on the dashboard but the same car, for civilians, had the gear stick on the console! :D It's kind of dumb but they need their radars and light controls and custom switches and blah blah blah all that stuff there. also, everywhere in the world has at least a few cars that have the gear stick on the dash but still all country's have the majority of there cars with the gear stick on the center console.

    Very nice work Chris. A lot of work went into making that center console. You can buy some really nice ready-made center consoles for around $100. You can buy one, then modify it, which is what I would do. You can use corner brackets on the inside, rather than screws on the outside.

    Hey Chris. I love the videos. Just some tips from an upholsterer. Keep those staples close and flush with the fabric. Don't angle the staples or it has an increased risk of coming apart. Stretching the foam over the edges or edge stapling the foam to the wood will help it to look cleaner. I upholster chairs and sofa consoles at La-z-boy. Keep up the great videos.

I would suggeset getting one of those slip resistant mats that you typically put in your tool box or on your shelves in the kitchen to give a little bit of friction. That way the officer can put any size and type of device on that mat in that open space so they can directly look at it while driving and not worry about it sliding off when turning sharply. +Choujeen thats why he used stainless screws because they are more appealing to the eye, you could use black screws too but then it just looks like you tried to hide them and it didnt work. I like the stainless look myself.

    Hey ChrixFix, I'm glad you're doing another police project car video after that. I think you can touch up and improve the center console a bit more, such as hide the staples from sight by putting plastic on the bottom of the flip cover, and the interior walls of the storage area. The storage area is deep, although I'm not sure if it could be utilized all that well. Could you show us how to add rear AC vents to the center console and make some kind of shelf storage system and add racks which would be more useful? Police Project Car Videos are always awesome, I'd be looking forward to Part 3 of center console with fine-tuning and maybe even an AC attachment!

    Personally, I think gluing that front piece in would've helped ensure it was securely in place. I think spray painting the inside of the armrest black would've been a nice touch too. Otherwise, this turned out pretty great - good work.

  • @chrisfix

    @chrisfix

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Peter Schmidt There is no reason to glue the front piece. It allows for quick access to the electrical wires when it gets wired in. As for the inside of the arm-rest, you could do more if you want. That is all up to the individual. In this case, I am not sure what the officer wants. maybe he wants a gun holster in there or something like that so I did not finish the inside.

    Chris, check into how to stretch a canvas to a frame for painting. Use that technique for stapling, it makes for an even stretching and reduces wrinkling. Basically you start from the centers and work your way to the edges. Some more of that abs plastic would be great to use as a bottom and sides for the insides to cover the wood and cover the staples as well.
