How to Build a Boat out of Plywood (15 ft, 4.5 m Dinghy)

Ғылым және технология

I built this 15 ft or 4.5 meter dinghy or fishing punt in early 2010 in the Philippines (Bohol Island). The video describes every single step until the boat is in the water.
The purpose of this boat was to bring me out to the reef for diving and snorkelling. I put an 8 HP outboard engine on it which was fine, but the boat can also take a bigger one, maybe 15 HP or so.
You need about 4-5 sheets of plywood to build it. About 10 mm for the bottom and 6.5 mm for the sides.
Update 11th January 2018: Today I sold this boat to a local Dive Center. It had been in a shed for almost 6 years, because we had moved to Thailand.
Before that it was used for 3 seasons: 10/11; 11/12 and 12/13. When I took it out yesterday I was amazed how good the condition of it still was. With a new coat of paint it would look like new again.
So you can easily use a boat made with this method for several years.
The plan for this boat was downloaded from the internet, but I changed the bow.

    Awesome good!! Stitch and glue boats are fun to built. Just a word of caution based on previous experience with stitch and glues: try to avoid trailering with outboards if you can on smaller boats. I had an issue with transom cracking from sides even with reinforced corners. Ended up welding a mount to front of trailer to attach 5hp while towing.

    I thought Philippines the first few minutes of the video. My wife is from their, it's my favorite place to be, no better people in the world, and no prettier country on Earth. I really appreciate the video, I want to start my on boat soon. I want to start with a wood frame like this one, but I want to reinforce it a bit, and coat the hole boat in fiberglass so I can use it to hold my airboat motor and frame.

    Useful video, i was searching it because here in italy it's raining too much and my mother was thinking "hey we should buy a small boat for when the streets are full of water". Personally i should have mounted a motor, the hooks for the rows and a tube in the center for a sail, but for a video tutorial it could be too much😅

    Great job! When do you remove the cable ties along the edges of the panels?

  • @gewibu

    @gewibu

    5 жыл бұрын

    Same answer as below: You glue the inside of the boat first and the cable ties stay in place. They should be covered by the epoxy. When it comes to the outside, the inside part should be dry and hard and the boat sticks together. You may then cut the remainings of the cable ties at the outside or grind them away when you round the edges before you attach the fiber and epoxy. Attaching the epoxy and fiber should be done in one workflow. Inside first and outside the next day or later.

Thanks edit: I have another question, how did the sides react to bending after you glued the butt block? I assume it wouldn't want to bend in that area due to the epoxy and the additional thickness?

  • @gewibu

    As for the frames: You can use 1" x 2" (20mm x 40mm) battens or 12mm plywood. Bending the sides with the butt block is not a problem. It's only 6 mm plywood. Please visit boatbuilder.gewibu.com for more infos.

What is the maximum weight you have ever loaded the boat with, and how much weight do you think the boat can hold overall? Thanks for your video, and reply!!

    Don't know where the limit is. I put up to 5 people inside with a max weight of about 350 kg. Thus the boat is full already. However, in the Philippines they using similar boats as transfer boats from shore to bigger boats and they load them with 10 or more people + luggage. www.alamy.com/tourists-travelling-to-malapascua-island-from-cebu-transfer-from-a-large-vessel-to-a-smaller-one-to-reach-the-island-image227289750.html

    The boat was build in 2010 and I just sold it in January 2018. Still in good condition but it had spent the las few years in a garage. A Dive Center bought it and they put special rubber mat inside as an upgrade. You may have a look on the pictures in my blog: www.leben-auf-bohol.com/boot-verkauft.html It's in German however, you can still see the pics.

    thank you so much sir, but may i ask, what does the rubber mat add to the boat? less stresses on the bottom? water proofing? i don't really get it

  • @gewibu

    It protects the bottom and the walls from bumbs of the diving tanks and other hard equipment. And it looks good, very good. It also protects the bottom from water. Unfortunately, I can't add a pic here.

    How is the punt holding up??? i would like to build one, with regards to the transom have u doubled it up? and did you screw in directly into the plywood? why did you not use a chine at the bottom?

  • @gewibu

    @gewibu

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yes, I made the transom stronger because of the 8 HP motor. What is a chine? There is a keel however... For more infos please visit: boatbuilder.gewibu.com for more details and howto's about this boat.

    @@gewibu Chine is like the railing that you have put on the top, it a similar type of lumber which i placed at the bottom between the bottom sheet and the side panels. Thanks for the reply though, are you facing any water leaks or has the ply deteriorated?

  • @gewibu

    @gewibu

    3 жыл бұрын

    There is no need for the "chine" you mentioned. The fibermat and the epoxy is doing the job to keep the sides and the bottom together. Please read the details at the website I mentioned above. Also: There are NO screws or nails in this boat.

    Just wondering do you have to shape the sides so that the front of the boat is off the ground or does that just happen on it's own when you put the ribs in?

  • @gewibu

    @gewibu

    3 жыл бұрын

    If you have a look in the plans, you can see that the lower edge of the side panels is not 100% straight. That's why the front lifts upwards a little. However, I gave the front a new shape anyway. For more details & link to the plans please have a look at the corresponding website: boatbuilder.gewibu.com

    Nice job. Only one little question, did you added some bench on the boat. I guess so since i saw a few framing clips probably to hold them but we couldn't see on the video. Personally, and that is purely by reflex, not based on any expertise, but where the bottom meets the sides, i would have added a small 2 X 3/4 stick to beef up the joint.

    No need for more fiber. The boat ist now 8 years old and still in service. The bottom however has a thicker plywood. Fiber is only along the edges while the whole boat is painted with epoxy.

    At least for a few years. Depends how you maintain it and how often you use it. The boat in the video was 7 years old when I sold it. It was still in good condition. But I have to admid that it was not always in the water.

    I made the benches by myself. That is not very difficult. I also changed the bow by myself by bringing the two sides together. It doesn't matter which kind of bow you prefer since the bow does not touch the water.
