Aussie here. And someone trying to learn how to lay Besser blocks (what you'd call "cinderblocks"). After creating my first wee wall at the weekend (8000x400mm), came to KZread looking for additional tips and tricks. Firstly: your trowel guy. Work of art. If I could trowel like that, I'd die a happy man. Secondly, really enjoyed the clear commentary and camerawork. Voiceover guy does a great job. Anyway, thank you for a really informative video. Good luck to all the amateur DIYers luck out there; may all your walls be straight and true!
Even though I know nothing about concrete or building walls, I always appreciate anyone who demontrates professionalism and expertise in their line of work. Good job 🖖🏿

Well one shortcut was maybe not smoothing out the top of the foundation. The concrete is more prone to rot this way i think.

This is mainly about masonry with some mention of rebars but in the early '70s I did a couple of years of rebar work on drainage tunnels, retaining walls and so forth; I'm often fascinated by the complexities of different kinds of construction work..., it reminds me of how ignorant I am about so many things. Good Work !!!

I wish you were here in Phoenix, you do some outstanding work that will last a lifetime. You pay attention to detail which makes the difference. My idea if I were to build a home would be the block being reinforced at the sides of all doors and windows, then at minimum every three feet down the wall. This would rebar placed in the cores at all doors and windows, then at 36 inch intervals or less. Then bond beams every two feet up the wall for 5 bond beams on a 8 foot high wall. My home I live in is 4x8x16 block and was very well laid. There is no bucking and weaving of the block, nice straight mortar lines. It was built in a subdivision around 1966-67. Because the block was so well laid, had I been the contractor, the masonry guys would have gotten bonuses for their work, you can tell they took pride in their job. I see it in your crews as well, attention to detail is so very important. Outstanding work!!

great work. I've watched all of your videos and they are very helpful. I was wondering if you had any tips on cutting regular 6×8×16 blocks so that the wall curves or makes a half moon? I always have trouble with that and the back side of the blocks are usually to wide or the front side has no room to grout. same trouble with caps, they are usually not the same thickness apart or i end up not having any width to grout. if you have any tips I would appreciate it. Thank you so much.

Your videos and work are superb David. One thing we do with vertical Rebar work is to put an end cap on all the stubs so we don't stick them in our faces when bending and working on the lines. I like the domed ones as they hurt less when i do a face plant on them.

Hey David. Looks like when the concrete was poured you didn't level it. I'm guessing that's because your first row of block will be made level, which the rest of the wall will be built on.

No doubt. That's why it works.
My neighbor just had one wall built. Wife has video of the builders break bricks and filling the holes were the steel is before they filled the blocks with concrete. He was upset because he wanted to hang a gate. Claims he's going to knock of some of the cap and fill with concrete. Now my father-in-law has hired these same guys to build both of my walls. He doesn't believe my neighbors because one of the builders is an old friend from the 70's. My neighbor wants me to make sure they build them right so I found your video. 4 weeks wall one and we have a one trench with rebar and nothing else. 8 weeks and nothing done for wall two.
Nice show, I chased a lot of masons being an Electrician.
