How to build a better refugee camp | Lisa Campbell | TEDxCastelfrancoVeneto

Lisa participates in order to sensitize the audience about a current and crucial topic: hospitality and assistance to the refugees. Not living in an ideal world in which the significant number of refugees could be absorbed in a short period of time giving them houses, how can we build a refugee camp? The priority is paying attention to the dignity of these people because those migrants asking for help are people first, refugees second. The involvement of the local community is not less important as it is the integration of the refugees in camp activities in order to reach the main aim of Do Your Part: to build a community, not only a camp, in which the residents participate actively in the community life. Lisa invites us to rethink our approach to this social issue proving that we care. Lisa Campbell is the cofounder and executive director of Do Your Part. During her life, she has always dedicated her time to our “neighbor”, taking care of him. She took part in many emergency project and she became a “emergency medical technician”. In 2016, she has been nominated manager of the refugee camp in Oinofyta. Once it had been closed by the Greek government, she opened a community center in the near Dilesi. The Oinofyta camp reopened, but in precarious conditions. Despite this situation, Lisa engagement has always focused on those people in need and their dignity. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

What a shame Oinofyta was not able to build that community further along these lines! But the people who have been part of this brilliantly sensible and streetwise project are carrying on, with you, Lisa, included. Deep in my heart, I have never left Oinofyta, and I only volunteered there for two weeks. The bags from the sewing workshop are now with the youngest members of my extended family in Hungary and Sweden.

An option I like is similar to or same as the Vegan Kibbutz Cooperatives . A kibbutz becomes self sufficient a cooperative share is for sharing in the fruits of labor. New Orleans area had refugee style camps after Katrina, it took a lot of work and helped many. All camps need vegetative food growth areas. as well as other basic services and housing and tent areas.

This is sad to watch because Oinofyta has now so few of these things. The school, for example, had no furniture until another grassroots NGO brought some in (after which a broken window meant a half of it was promptly stolen again). Lessons happen twice a week for a few hours. The only basic services are provided by the speaker’s organisation, Do Your Part but they are pretty basic. There are no chickens, and there is also no hot water. What happened? What the speaker describes sounds brilliant. But why was it not sustained?

The camp was closed by the Ministry of Migration in November of 2017. DYP opened a community center in the nearby town of Dilesi. DYP is NOT in the camp now. The IOM is running it now.

Because the Greek government closed Lisa's camp and took it over for political reasons, so now they run it instead of Lisa. Do Your Part (or any other NGO's outside of IOM) are allowed in the camp at all. It's a tragedy.
