Regarding Actor feat: this feat will give you expertise in deception and performance even if you do not have proficiency in the skills. What this means is - if you are planning on taking the actor feat, you should avoid taking deception or performance or, better yet, respec out of them when you take the feat. this also means you should avoid taking backgrounds that grant you either deception or performance because you cannot respec out of background proficiencies and they are essentially wasted once you take Actor.

DMs who make bards do that are stupid and you won’t change my mind. Do they make folks playing fighters/barbs get up and display their physical prowess? No. Do they make wizards do a pop quiz when doing an arcana check? No. If they do something similar for each character, then fine, I could see some party’s enjoying that.

I like my Bard. First time playing something that isn't more DPS oriented. Sure, I don't do as much damage as I normally am use to but I still do decently with duel hand crossbows and the damaging spells I have access to. The best thing so far has been the versatility. So many proficiencies. I can fill so many roles with this one character. The face of the party that is amazing with all the social skills, great utility with buffs and debuffs and some healing, and also fill the Rogue role with great sleight of hand and dex and stealth. That's like 3 characters rolled into one and it really frees me up for the other characters I can bring with me. Basically any combination of companions seem to work well with a Bard. I am finding the damage to be decent for a utility role class. This is with playing as Lore Bard. I'm sure the other subclasses can do a bit more damage

  • @davidcrawford5324
    @davidcrawford532410 ай бұрын

Due to the fact that Bards are major skill monkeys as ItalianSpartacus so eloquently put it, you can easily set up your bard to give you ALL of the skills and proficiency/expertise bonuses that are typically utilized on a rogue. So long as your bard is set up to be Dex based, you will have everything you need. Perception, Stealth, Sleight of Hand, etc. While you do miss out on sneak attacks or any other rogue only skills/abilities, you can easily get by without them. Unless you desperately want the extra bonus actions awarded to the Thief subclass you can simply use your bard to do all of the rogue stuff AND be the face of the party, AND be support or go College of the Sword and do the heavy hitting yourself. In this way you can respec Astarion into something else such as Ranger or a caster class or even a frontline fighter/barb or whatever you desire, and have everyone else go ham on damage with Shadowheart as your heal/buff bot. Using Enhance Ability or Cat's Grace to give yourself advantage on every dice roll for every disarm trap or lockpicking or pickpocketing activity is nice too. You'll seldom lose a roll in this manner when your bonuses are high enough.

For Magical Secrets I can’t recommend Command enough. When you upcast it you add additional targets - it gives you a really good low spell level control option that doesn’t use up your Concentration and it’s so flexible. All options make them lose a turn but depending on which command you give you can make the enemies flee to provoke, make them drop their weapons (an action to reequip it assuming you don’t pick their weapon up first), lay prone, etc. Note that you make enemies unable to move(ie fear) AND prone they lose their turns because they don’t have any movement to use to stand up.

Just so you know, i noticed you keep recommending high elf for the cantrip. Its a good idea however if you choose any attack roll dependent spell you use INT for the roll instead of say CHArisma for Bard or WISdom for cleric. This is also why Shadowheart often misses her firebolt cuz she stacks WISdom not INT. So id stick to minor image, friends etc.

This could definitely be fixed for QoL. The frost staff you assemble in the underdark grants access to frostbolt as an action cantrip and on my druid it used Wis for the attack roll. Do not know if this applies to other spells/cantrips or if it works for Cha casters, but the point stands.

Nice to see some more bard love, I played through the original BG 1&2 as a bard and it was the most fun I had and was slightly concerned that the 5e/bg3 bard would not be as cool and glad I was wrong. It's a shame you can't take over a bar/theatre as your stronghold as you could in the original but here's hoping for some DLC/expansions. BTW I would not characterise the swords bard as only a self buffing marshal character because you can use your bardic inspiration to buff allies OR use it to perform flourishes etc. My quick tip is to buff everyone before a short rest with any you have left over and then start any encounters with everyone prebuffed and your inspiration font full so to speak. I do love the lore bard for flavour but in the end the swords bard is just so effective it's worth giving up the first magical secrets for an extra attack and the flourishes. The flourishes are so effective they are almost OP, if the attack lands the enemy gets pushed back and there appears to be no saving throw. I finished my first playthrough on tactician with a bardadin with 2 levels of palli and 10 of bard and it was super effective. I went with oath of vengence and you could add a d4 of radiant damage to allies attacks with no concentration and a d4 of radiant to your own attacks using concentration. Also accidently broke my oath and that was a fantastic little side plot in it's own right even getting a new camp companion until I paid up to get my oath back. On a second playthrough with a pure bard built for dualing now and amazed at how much new content am finding especially considering how completionist I was trying to be. Looks like 200hrs just scratched the surface :) have fun everyone.

Try lore bard. It’s one of the best support characters in the game. Make shadowheart a life cleric and set her up as the healer and tank. Have your bard built to be the lock picker. Now you have two companion slots and everyone else in the whole game can focus on dealing damage. The cutting words from college of lore is absolutely huge. You have a bunch of the bardic inspiration dice. They recharge on short rest. You’re able to use these to change a hit into a miss which basically makes them extra heal spells that recharge on short rest. Also, you can use them to force an enemy to fail a saving throw to prevent yourself from wasting spells. Lastly the extra magic secrets are a pretty big deal. It’s DEFINITELY not damage focused (there are specific levels where you get access to make spells and in the right fight it can deal high damage … but, where it excels is pinpointing key enemies and taking them out of the fight for a few rounds while companions melt through the others. So, now companions that are druids, warlocks, wizards, or sorcerers really only have to focus on dealing maximum damage. They don’t even have to think about support oriented spells (except the ones that are dual purpose like hunger of hadar or spike growth).

  • @karllong

@@zero11010 Yes I love the lore bard and in fact played that for the first 6 or 7 levels because it is for me a more quintessential bard in flavour and RP. Once I tried out the swords bard though the combination of support and dmg was just too potent. As I said the swords bard can still buff, CC and do damage and tbh on a 4 person party I need everyone to lay down some damage and support. Same reason I use the tempest cleric and not the life cleric :) Killing the enemy quickly is sometimes the best support. Anyway, if I had the flexibility of a 6 person party I might be able to afford more support focused ppl, but tbh that's not my style :)

The High Elf cantrip is int-based. Not a good idea for an offensive bard spell, but for Friends, sure. But how can you resist using Vicious Mockery every turn?!?! Best spell in the game. I love going lore bard and basically insulting my opponents in and out of my turn the whole time. Now if only we got more character voices so that I could have a proper, rumbling dragonborn or deep dwarf voice for those insults. Cutting Words from Lore Bard honestly feels better than Valor Bard's Combat Inspiration, for AC specifically because Cutting Words is a reaction on anyone (not bonus action on 1 person) to decrease an enemy's attack roll. Didn't notice you mentioning that. Combat Inspiration is still good, I'd probably reserve it for boosting damage. Valor bard also gets an extra attack, not just Swords. Oh and make sure to check the reactions tab in the spellbook and set it to "ask" when to use barding inspirations! I wasted a lot of bardic inspirations on trivial or hard-to-stop attacks before I did that.

The Bard Paladin is my main. I would suggest starting bard. I did it mostly for RP reasons but it also makes sense for optimizing. The early parts of the game dont require you to be able to do big damage so smite isn’t that necessary and your flourish can provide the needed ac boost. I would go 6 swords bard to get the extra attack and to get your flourish back on a short rest. Then take two paladin of your choice and finish bard. I suggest spirit guardians and counterspell for your magical secrets.

This gives 6 short rests per long rest. That’s a LOT of short rest stuff … your ki points, combat maneuvers, Paladin oath stuff, cleric channel divinity, warlock spells, Druid wild shape… plus all the special weapon attacks and magic gear that recharges on short rest. I’m guessing you wouldn’t need to do long rests more often than once per 2-3 levels. That sounds crazy. And fun. And crazy fun.

I'm waiting to receive a reimbursement for some things. When I get it, I'm buying BG3, and I think I'm going to try to replicate the build that I had for a (lore) bard I played from levels 1-12 in Hoard of the Dragon Queen/Rise of Tiamat. The rest of the party was crazy damage monkeys. I took Aura (Warden) of Vitality as one of my Magical Secrets at level 6, and a one-level dip in Life Cleric to get that sweet, sweet Disciple of Life bonus to my healing. I know the Life Cleric is probably still the gold standard for healing, but it wasn't just about being the healer. Cutting Words and Vicious Mockery brought damage mitigation by forcing more attacks to miss. Suggestion and Hypnotic Pattern (among others) brought damage mitigation by parking some of the tougher enemy combatants out of the fight until we were ready for them. Aura (Warden) of Vitality was only for when fights got pretty hairy or when we needed to top off between fights. 2d6 + 5, ten times, is a fantastic amount of healing to produce for a third-level spell slot. From what I'm reading, Larian interpreted this interaction the same way I did and my DM did. I think this general toolkit served much more effectively in keeping the party alive and healthy than a single-classed Life cleric might have done, _and_ I got to be a bard which is just...so much fun. I would play that bard again at the drop of a hat.

I think two weapon fighting is better unless you plan on being mostly a spell caster anyway (in which case pick college of lore) the ranged two attack flourish lets you target the same enemy with both hits and when you combine it with a second hand crossbow (which adds your dex mod if you choose two weapon fighting ) and the level 6 extra attack, you can drop 5 attacks in one turn and it just sweeps most of the bard spells I use are support or debuffs and then I just blast my crossbows, at level 6 I was regularly doing 25-40 damage per turn without needing to fulfill sneak attack requirements, while having some of the best spells in the game (for me I used vicious mockery/dissonant whispers/hypnotic pattern/ both healing spells/faerie fire)

Questions about Bard/Pally vs Pally/Bard (who get spec'd first) Background. I have not gotten very far - one character (monk lvl 3 has almost made it to the Goblin Camp - (they're wandering around by the Gnome Windmill). I wanted to see what some others were like - it's a habit. So I have a Ranger (level 3 I think) and a level 3 Cleric/Bard (1/2) - for some reason I thought he was 1 level higher but I just looked. I thought I'd respec to Pally/Bard - I like fighting more than casting and I can get enough casting between Shadowheart & Gale. So, I like the idea of Sword Bard. So far, I like them all, but I think I like the Bard best. I 1. I think I spec'd into a background of Entertainer - but I don't remember - is there an easy way to tell? 2. My Bard is Human (I'm a long time skill junky - can't help it). When I spec Pally first, I end up with fewer skills above zero than if I spec Bard - then 2 levels of Pally. Is there some downside that I'm missing to going Bard first? If it's just a few HP then I'm okay with that. I may just Start over, but I think the 2 levels of Paladin will probably come after the first level as Bard unless there's something I'm missing.

Life Cleric 1/Lore Bard 11 is one of the best support characters in the game, while Life Cleric 1/Warlock 2/Lore Bard 9 is a decent support character who is also pumping out consistent decent damage. You mentioned the Paladin 2/Sword Bard 10 and Paladin 6/Bard 6 Bardadin builds and the particularly well liked Bard 10/Warlock 2 but you skipped the unusual but cool Paladin 2/Warlock 4/Sword Bard 6 combination. I would regard all 3 of these additional builds to be more relevant and more interesting to play than the Sorcerer multiclass.

If you dont want to use your Bard as bait then a different character needs to have musical instrument proficiency. To do this have a non bard talk to Alfira the Bard in the druid grove and pass the performance checks to help her. That character will get musical instrument proficiency and be able to use perform. Also you can play together with all your other party members that can also use perform. I did this with Karlach and now she looks awesome playing a lute before she gets absolutely blasted.

A minor comment on the racial suggestions, with Gith. Overall, not a bad choice, but LESS valuable for Bard than some others (super valuable on rogue), for its auto-proficiency. Bard gets Jack of All Trades, which gives half-proficiency to everything they're not proficient in. Rogue however gets the one that makes it so you can't roll below a 9 on any you do have proficency in. It's still a solid choice, it's just not as good for Bard, who already can mitigate not being proficient.

If you want the game on easy mode … make your main character a Halfling bard from college of lore. It’s pretty crazy. It may not be fun because it starts to make the game easy regardless of tactician or whatever else. You’ll dominate all the dialog stuff and handle all the lockpicking. Set shadowheart up with life domain. She’s able to tank and heal. Then you have two companion slots who can just DPS (bard for support and cleric for heals). Astarion as rogue/monk or rogue fighter. 3 levels of rogue for third and open hand monk or battlemaster fighter. (4 levels of rogue to get the third feat at level 12). Lots of options for this. Two weapon fighting is wonderful. Great weapon fighting is also fine. The polearm master build (great weapon variant) is also fun. For monk you can cheese with the tavern brawler or go dex focused and it’s still great. Lae’zel as whichever above combo Astarion didn’t take. You’ll be doing four attacks per round. And it’s amazing. One of these can be champion fighter to make a crit monkey. This is easier in act 3, or you can hire the Halfling and use them for it (the lucky racial makes them hit more and crit more, especially with advantage). Halsin is fine as the manimal. Though spore Druid is good and after the last patch there is talk of spore+monk. Jaheria works well as a spore Druid. I think if you go spore you want to go with summons. She will burn through resources and having a summon out helps slow that down some. Karlach is tricky. Just like with spore Druid barbarian is a lot of fun, but they run out of rages and then you’re just sad. Barbarian is certainly fun, but you’ll bring her out and try to only rage every other fight .. and she’ll still run out if resources and get left back at camp to eat dirt or whatever. Wyll is an eldritch blast machine. By the time you get to act 3 you’ll find weapons just don’t hold up. (1D10+1D6+12)x3 per attack action is just crazy, and you can certainly tune it up from there.

@@italianspartacus okay I wasn't sure if it was or wasn't like games like diablo when if you make tour build how ever you want you end up having a build that will get you killed lol, I love my build that I listed up top but didn't know if this was something that would get me destroyed or not, I just got this game the other day and it's my first d&d game so I'm still very much learning

Are you sure Longstrider is a ritual spell?

It is, but the one he showcased is NOT the ritual version. The ritual spells will have an icon of a hand drawn green 5 pointed star on them in the tooltip so you will know which ones to use to avoid using a precious spell slot

Out of combat it functions like one and doesn't waste a spell point. So you can buff your whole party with 3 movement speed without wasting any spells same with long jump.

This is really good but I strongly disagree about his advice of putting uneven numbers in stat allocations. Put it at 16 not 17 yes there are some things where you later might get a +1 and thus want an uneven number but you can always respec. Respeccing costs basically nothing

Bard is way cooler than having a wizard in your party, so worth.

Drow make excellent bards, even if their societies rarely produce them. But really not a beginner-friendly class.

@@zzz-cb3xe Fairly high degree of complexity. Primarily a support class. Low survivability at early levels combined with slow spell progression. For those reasons likely extremely frustrating for players new to D&D.

So, what are cantrips? I have kinda just been playing with what sounds cool. I have just been asking myself what Slash would do 😂. This game is fun but there is just so much.

Cantrips are level 0 spells, which basically means you get unlimited casts on them per day.
