For domestic tranquility, ease and because I bore really quickly of the same old layout, I have gotten better at "stealth" tracks. Back/front yard are about 1/2 acre each, flat packed rock/clay 1/2 grass. I visualize a track say oval, figure 8, kidney whatever works and then move feeders, obstacles. If needed use ready available objects/materials/various colored dirts to outline the course. Then using my big boy , a 1/6 UDR truck I drive the layout for days and burn it in. That with a rake, blower etc and soon enough you can "see" the track. I can get away with 1/10 scales with larger tires, clearance even 1/16 E Revos. Later as you "break in " the track. new lines open up, you see other possibilities. This is the next best thing to going all out and actually tearing up your lawn.

This video is what keeps me going whenever I start to burn out from gardening. It has been 200+ hours of work so far, mostly with hand tools, moving literal tons of gravel, dirt, and vegetation. But now that sweet backyard rc track is finally within reach 😄 Had a lot of time to think about the track layout, and I have decided to make a banked oval with a cross through the middle (like a figure 8 on top). Maybe a dirt ramp in the center. Anyway, great video and production quality 👍And thanks for the inspiration 🙂

It is a lot of work to do one and to maintain it but it really is nice to stroll out in your backyard and turn some laps anytime you like! I agree working the layout to maintain a good lane width is key and both looks better but also makes it easier to drive! My only regret is the massive table top I made on mine as it got a little out of hand and it a pain in the rear to maintain! It also is going to be a nightmare to modify so I live with it! The small moveable jumps you did are a way better choice!

  • @VINTAGEBACKYARDRC

Thanks my friend and I agree on all counts. Don't get me wrong...I LOVE a good dirt jump...but running the lawn equipment over the dirt ramp on the old track lead to much failure...haha. Weeds are the big enemy for me (especially now that I don't use roundup anymore) and the most work for sure. All in all it's very much worth the time and would absolutely still have a track even if the channel went away. Best of times to just walk out back for a bash.

Nice build tutorial! I just finished building a similar size backyard track with just hand tools. Crab grass, thick hawaiian clay, and junk backfill for soil made it quite the endeavor. Tried to incorporate drainage features like rock filled trenches leading to dry well, but the clay will only handle so much water at a time. Survived the first big rain storm and quite happy with how it turned out. I used hollow blocks and rock as the foundation of the jumps/landings, but it does indeed require more dirt than you would think. In the end, it's very rewarding to rip your rc's around a prepped track in the convenience of your own home.

@@gogotrololo Thank so much. I love being able to help in any way! The thing that's good(?)about a Pumpkin/Lunchbox is it will be good in the grass and they have a not so great turning radius. If you are planning a track with tight corners you will quickly run into the L/P's lack of cornering ability...lol. In stock forum I struggle getting one around my track for sure. So a more open layout works with those style of cars. Take the fast car out as well!
