    Great info on using the brush to apply the compound and the foam wool pad to finish. Simon did all my nonskid on my boat then ceramic coated it, looks like brand new!! You will not believe the difference it makes to the nonskid.

    Thank you. Heading down to FMB to try this method out. Cleaning a new 6 month old boat that got pretty dirty from Ian. Spent all day yesterday washing, but was not happy with the cleanliness of the non-skid.

    What’s you’re go steps for restoring diamond non skid that’s heavily oxidized? As always great video man! Purple wool pad from lake country is the hottest topic I think in the boat detailing world currently 👍🏼

    I use a wool pad first and turn the pad on its side. Then I finish with purple foamed wool pad. Seems to be a great system so far.

    You mention in one of your comment answers, if non-skid is more aggressive and heavily oxidized, you would use a wool pad turned on it's side. Would all your other steps be the same after that--or would you use different pads, compounds etc.? Your vids are very informative--really enjoy them. Thankyou. G

    I wouldn’t compound or polish under 50 degrees but you can try if you want. Definitely no sealants or ceramics below 50

    Yes you could if you wanted. It’s not scientifically proven but I personally believe repel pro is best on nonskid in terms of bonding.

    Hi Simon ! I was in the process of buffing my boat, when I saw your video about buffing the nonskid section. So today I did exactly what you explain. I used the purple foamed wool pad with Mezerna 400. I had to use some FSR to deep keen the nonskid before buffing. So to say that everything went well. Now I have a question. After cleaning the non-skid with alcohol, the gel coat becomes dull. How important is it that the surface be shiny before applying the ceramic coat ? Thank you,

  • @topdockpro

    @topdockpro

    It’s very important to nonskid is free of oxidation. If not the ceramic won’t last as long. I find Starke Elevate to work better than Menzerna 400

    My non-skid id the same type as the one you did. It's not the diamond shape but the older Sea Ray type. I find that I have some yellowing in some lower parts of the non-skid. When you buff, it's mostly the high parts of the non-skid that gets shiny...

  • @topdockpro

    Yellow will typically mean you still have oxidation unless for other reasons I’m unaware of. This may be too late now… but using the side of wool pad, at a 90 degree angle will get more cut. They also make heavier cut foamed wool pads and heavy compounds such as Level R for this purpose.

  • @topdockpro

    They are relatively durable but not like the regular wool and foam pads. You would need 2-3 to do a boat

    Hey man, what do would you recommend for a diamond-style nonskid on a SeaCraft CC? It's pretty oxidized. Can I use a Harbor Freight Polisher? If so, which one do you recommend? Also, what pad do you recommend for the diamond nonskid? I also have some 3M heavy and medium-cut/ polish I plan on using on it, however, I want to use Starke on the gunwales and hull.

  • @topdockpro

    @topdockpro

    Hey Steven. I would recommend you use a heavy cut compound such as Starke Level R or 3M heavy is fine. 3M heavy takes a very long time to break down so you will need to buff it for a 1-2 minutes. Take a rotary buffer and a wool pad, turn the pad on it side and buff out all the oxidation. After that, you can use the same process I did in the video. Get a polisher (harbor freight is okay) and a foamed wool pad and use Starke Elevete to polish! Good Luck! Did I answer your question?

    If you are asking and are not doing this as a profession, any rotary with a soft start, speed setting dial, and a trigger lock will make quick work of your project. Asa boat owner, I buy cheap ones and keep a few in the lineup. It's not hard to drop a polisher from a ladder and crack the housing or pull out the cord. I caught a handrail once and bent an arbor. If I uses Rupes or DeWalt, I'd have broken $3000 in polishers in my life of boat ownership. I don't care how well you build a polisher, they aren't designed to fall from an 8' ladder.

    I have a diamond non-skid that have some stains that won’t come out with normal wash. I was going to use Level R and later Ceramic with Repel Pro. Any advice on compound to use?? Level R or Elevate?

  • @topdockpro

    @topdockpro

    2 жыл бұрын

    Give the nonskid a good wash with degreaser such as simple green (green bottle) or super clean (purple bottle). You could use a pressure washer with proper judgement and try to get out the stains prior to buffing. If those don’t work it may be a rust or heavy metal stain, so you could use a rust removing agent such as Rust Aid. Make sure to rinse throughly after application. It takes a few minutes for the product to start working away at the rust. After that you are good to buff! I would buff with both Level R and Elevate to ensure a completely oxidation free surface. This is best for ceramic coating! However, I don’t know the condition of your nonskid, but at the minimum it needs Elevate! I never would recommend a one step unless the boat is 2 years or newer.
