How To Clean Your Bearings! Edit: It’s recommended to add speed cream or lube after you clean them. I completely forgot to add that part in this video! They will still work the same without it, but they just might not last as long. Some people don’t use it if they decide pop the shields out. So it completely up to you! @@sonsysmokes Think a little bit more, if this video is in my recommendations and i watched it, it's because i do skate .... otherwise it would have made no sense, as you almost figured out. Now for the bearings, i can agree that putting the shields back on doesn't help getting the dirt and dust out of them. What it does however, is it help keeping the lubricant you just put to actually stay inside of your bearings, and also keeps the dirt and water from coming inside, so that you don't have to clean them as often. Manufacturers definitely wouldn't include these shields if they were detrimental, as you said. You can go ahead and call me a poser if you want, idgaf. I feel like calling anyone a poser and making fun of ppl who mall grabs their boards has become a trend or something, so ig that would make you kinda cool ... Anyway, all i wanted was to try and keep some ppl from having to clean their bearings too often, but if you guys like riding crunchy bearings, it's up to you ig ... Oh, and before you say something about my terrible grammar, because that's another trend apparently, just remember that English isn't everyone's native language 👍

    1. Dropping the bearings in acetone and letting them sit, does nothing. Instead of waiting 20min, just spin them around and agitate with a toothbrush. 2. Use spacers and washers. Keeping the nut loose will only hurt, free spin does not equal real world. As soon as you ride and apply any side force the bearing will bend and wear, slowing you down. 3. Add lube after I'm a car mechanic and longtime skateboarder/longboarder.

How to actually clean your bearings: Dunk them in motor oil. No seriously, spin them in the oil, and even use a toothbrush to agitate everything. The motor oil will remove all the gunk and remain to keep lubricating. No harmful chemicals, or extra steps. Take it back to chemistry class, like disolves like: oil dissolves oil. Adding alcohol, or soap will only damage the metal.

@@pun1865 It'll work to the extent that you add any liquid to the dry, sludgy bearing and scrub it with a toothbrush. In all, he's just trying to combine the cleaning and lubrication phase into one. The oil won't be nearly as good of a cleaner as isopropyl alcohol or the like. Remember, you want to get as much residue as you can that is left behind by the dried grease you are cleaning off as that will help reduce the lifespan of your new lubricant. Also, the oil will likely help trap particulates in deep recesses of the bearing as it is much thicker than alcohol and doesn't evaporate like the alcohol. Plus, when you agitate the bearings, alcohol will flow better than oil which will help displace dirt better. The motor oil is also meant to go into car engines, and will probably affect your max speed as it might be too thick. You'd basically want to use the lightest motor oil you can find, but that still doesn't address the cleaning aspect. Use the alcohol...

Best thing to do is take off the cover, soak them in oil and use a toothbrush to release any of the old gunk in there. Leave the new oil in there and replace the dust covers. Also, I don't recommend prolonged skating in the rain, not only will your board get waterlogged but you can also ruin your bearings depending on their condition.

as an engineer that does a lot of bearing jobs i can tell you it’s a good idea to regularly re-lube your bearing **BEFORE** they get rumbly/noisy. once they start, they’re already f*cked and ideally should be replaced. obviously most of yall aren’t going to replace them which is totally understandable cus good bearings aren’t cheap. also do what this says every time they get wet but also re-lube them either by packing some new grease in, or some heavy oil (300 weight or higher) most of this is too much of a hassle to do so its whatever but its just an idea pf what an ideal maintenance plan looks like xd

If you don’t have a good oil, any oil is better than no oil. You can lube them with mineral oil, baby oil or even olive oil or cooking oil.

Guys, if you have an old bb gun, take the pellets out, and shoot the bearings point blank. It knocks the gunk out and it works surprisingly well especially with ceramic barings

Lube up those bearings my man! I recommend high temp brake pad lube. CRC makes it, best damn lube you can put on those. It will make them last much longer! Also make sure it isn’t warped or pitted before cleaning. Cause if they are really damaged you might wanna just replace them.

  • @waybous

So what about the oil you're suppose to put in behind the bearing wall to help make sure the friction from the balls spinning in the race won't over heat and cause the bearing to be damaged?

That’s cleaning them, if they still make that noise after cleaning, replace them due to wear. Bearings that size aren’t expensive or hard to replace, not to mention they aren’t made to be serviced. And never put bearings back in dry like that, even a little lube goes a long way

Quick tip, bearings usually dont cost that much especially these small ones, if you get luck you might see some for maybe a Dollar or less, btw the number of the bearing is on the plastic ring on the outside that protects the bearings from dirt and water etc...
