You can't "break" bad habits. All you can do is create healthy ones, focus on growing those, and eventually they overwhelm the bad habits. A change in self perception must occur to stop a bad habit.

Breaking bad habits is simply a game of mindset and discipline. You have to make quitting the bad habit so important to you that you have NO OPTION but to quit. You must deeply prioritize your greatest values to create good habits.

Sometimes we think we learn a lot because we watch some videos like this one. In order to cope with the fact that we've wasted our time, we believe we've learned something. But at the end of the day it was pretty useless, and it was indeed a waste of time, partly. Just get a hobby, practice your strengths or try to learn something that is connected with your goals such as a future job, sports, something you think you're good at or something you enjoy but you know you can use it in real life.

For about two years, I had a habit of biting my nails whenever they were long enough for me to bite. It made my nails straight, and I even had issues with ingrown nails a few times. But, I eventually just got to the mindset of - "just don't bite your nails you little shit" and I stopped. I'm not joking, this is how I did it.

Hope this helps.

This video is mixing the ideas of chunking and learning . Learning is what the rat does when it knows exactly where the chocolate after a week ( this is a lot like the skinners experiment ) . Chunking on the other hand is a method of learning ( for ex , if you are to learn the number 12348765 you would break it down to 1234-8765 ) . Technically if you want to break a bad habit , using a negative reinforcer works well since it leads to avoidance / negligence.

I appreciate this video a lot. My main habits are picking at my nails and smoking cigarettes. I love how you explained similar stimulants to occupy the brain rather than the bad habit itself. I don't know if you guys have the answer, but smoking cigarettes; I've read is mostly the habit of rocking the arm back and forth from your mouth (same as eating or drinking or suckling even). I was curious if you know of any other methods of keeping the smoking habit aside! I have tried the patches and pills, quit for a month or two, but I feel like I need it within a few months if I get into a bad argument or feeling really down. Thank you very much in advance!

So from my experience as an ex-smoker I wanted to get my mouth occupied - I tried vaping or normal gums which somewhat helped. I also realized I do that to socialize - now I just go outside with the smokers without smoking. And to get my own peace and quiet - for that going for a walk helps and breathing techniques :) best of luck!

Lougle practice 478 breathing when stress begins or you know your triggers. Practice mindfulness and positive focus to just notice the moment and watch as it (the compulsion) eventually passes. Can also do a different task when you notice the compulsion to program a new connection through conditioning. Write down when the habbit occurs and where. Notice the frequency and you will be able to preemptively do the new behavior right when the trigger or cue happens thereby short circuting the tendancy for your brain to sabatoge itself with underlying musts and irrational beliefs (the self talk).
