How To Braid Falconry Equipment: Sennit Knot Jesses

Ever wanted to learn how to braid sennit knot jesses? In this video I’ll show you how. I have been braiding falconry equipment since 2016. When I first started learning I struggled to find falconry-specific instructions, or any instructions for that matter. So I decided to make the videos I wished I had when I began. I’ll be showing you the basics of how to braid, as well as some techniques I’ve learned through years of trial and error.
If you have any questions, drop them in the comments below and I will get back to you. If you have found these videos to be helpful, please like & subscribe.
Follow up with the Part II video in this series, How To Braid The Rose Sennit Knot, which is coming soon!
If you have found that braiding is not for you, I’d be happy to make you a custom set. Contact me @

Great tutorial. So clear that even I could figure it out, and shot so that I didn't have to move closer to the screen or, squint or put on cheaters. Awesome.

I will be releasing it soon! These videos take FOREVER to edit, but I'll get it out as soon as I can :). I use waxed dacron exclusively. I prefer the Tuffline brand that is pre-waxed, but I always give it a second coat of beeswax. The downfall to Tuffline is that it doesn't come in many colors, so for that I use micro cord from Atwood Rope. It isn't quite as durable as Tuffline but it is still really good stuff.

Hi Megan! I know this is an old video but I was curious how long you would braid a leash for a female red tailed hawk. I’m trying to make my own gear and didn’t know if you had a set length to braid it. I was also curious about leash extenders. If you see this and want to let me know, I’d appreciate it! Thank you so much!

Hi Megan! This is awesome! I'm working on my apprenticeship and my sponsor is having me learn to make all the furniture. Might I inquire what the tool is you have in this video to hold the cords as you braid? I think I'm gonna need one of those bad boys 😉 Thank you for all your great videos!

Hi! Congrats on your apprenticeship. Those are forceps, and yes...they are probably my #1 most used tool. I’ve attached a link for some on Amazon at the bottom of this comment. I also have an entire video dedicated to tools and materials, check that out here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/hpOKq9CfaN2WYs4.html Forceps on Amazon: Pair of Fishing Forceps, Straight and Curved, Stainless Steel - Ideal Fishing Pliers for Any Fishing Tackle Kit www.amazon.com/dp/B088PBNSWR/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_7GTFFJ64RWGX2PJTM7WC

No, there's another tool you use when you start to do the loops. They are forceps... it's some sort of clamp...

Nice vid, Megan. I've been doing some of my own, but I really have room for improvement. So this comes in handy. What cord or cords do you use? I am sure starting with the right materials helps a lot! Thanks, looking forward to more

  • @MeganTheFalconer

I use leather for anything I fly with jesses in (hawks and my aplomado). Leather jesses are safer as flying jesses than braided equipment due to the smaller Jess opening. But for tethering my falcons I use braided equipment. They each have their purpose.

For a 36" leash - 110" For 8" sennit knot jesses - 18" For 6" sennit knot jesses - 16" This all depends on the type of material you are using, thicker diameter will require more, thinner will require less. These dimensions are for atwood rope micro cord. Hope this helps!
