Just followed this video and wanted to leave my experience here for others! - Called Cathay to put 2 tickets on hold, but was only able to get it for 24 hours. 5 minute wait time to reach an operator. - AMEX MR & Capitol One points transferred immediately. - Total time from calling Cathay to finishing the booking took a total of 45 minutes! Had to go back and forth a little because I didn't receive the final confirmation until I called a second time. So I imagine this could have taken 30 minutes or less if everything went smoothly. you should do a video on a travel hack and see how that does. I think it would be popular. Like show how I should approach searching and finding the right deals with the points that I have from a beginners stand point. Cathay was my only carrier until Hong Kong policy practically destroyed them. I was basically abandoned in Thailand without even notice by them that my flights were cancelled. Cannot trust them now And their flights are now ridiculously Expensive. Switched to JAL.

you should mention that people usually need to book far ahead, typically 11 months, for rewards business class tickets from CX

Award availability is shown in the last couple minutes of the video most of it is 11+ months out. BOS-HKG has decent award space in July and beyond

I flew business from Toronto YYZ to Auckland AKL via HKG in Business Class for only 85,000 Asia Miles. 26 hours of business class with lounge access for both sectors this past September 2023. Now as of October 1 2023, it costs 110,000 Asia Miles for the same reward.

Yeah Cathay devalued their redemptions a couple months ago

As per my boss he said we can look for an available flight on the other airlines then call asia miles and tell the flight that we want to book from other airlines, then i spoke to asia miles and told me that we can only look the available flight for other airlines only on asia miles website. Hi Justin - you called Cathay and they said they would hold a redemption ticket for 48 hours? I called Cathay in HK and they said they can't hold redemption tickets. Can only hold paid tickets. Did you have to sweet talk them?

I was able to book SF to Hong Kong with a layover in Tokyo - so not direct on JA and Cathy Pacific from Tokyo to HongKong. Do you have a preference in flying JA or CAX?? This flight was also at 70k AA miles on business class. 0:45

I’ve flown both. Cathay is more comfortable. Japan airline just has better food.

Hey Max, thank you for making this video. I tried searching for flights from LAX to HK and then to mainland China. In the video, you mentioned flying from the WC cost 70,000 miles, when I checked it is now 85,000 miles. I wonder if I am doing something wrong or do you know if this is the new rate? The total quoted milage from Cathy's website (LAX to mainland China) was 110,000 miles. Wondering if this is a decent rate? Thank you!

Somewhat disagree that AA miles (AAdvantage) are hard to get. Starting in 2014, I began getting American Citi and Barclay credit cards. Using normal spend, (paid in full monthly) but putting a large amount down on a car purchase and some home renovations and appliances also, I currently have over 900,000 American miles. Oh, and that's after several domestic 1st class redemptions, a business class redemption for two from ATL-ORD-HKG with AA and CX as well as two separate business/first trips for two HKG-JFK, LGA-ATL with CX and AA. Last years flights in business were for two ATL-DFW-LHR with AA, LHR-ATH with partner BA, returning IST-LHR-BA business, then LHR-ATL in BA first. (Just try to avoid BA when possible due to their outlandish "fuel surcharges".) No, I'm not wealthy, retired too, but with excellent credit and enough income to pay the credit card amounts when they come in. Oh yeah, I also have over 900,000 with UA and Chase which is helpful when AA wants 135K a pop for our April return from Spain and UA wants 90K!

it seems to be all a game. i have the miles to go from New york to Bangkok in August but, did not see any avaliblity until later in the year. They could simply put a calendar up with the space available but, that would be too easy for you.

Any tips to book ticket from NA to India ??

Best is Alaska miles. Only 50k for CX business class to Asia with a free stopover in HK. Too bad they change restrictions too late. I changed my March trip 2 weeks ago to only stopover in HK then catch another flight to Hanoi instead. Going to Sapa. Its a long layover so maybe I can hang out in HK and dim sum before reboarding for my flight.

True, but using Alaska miles to book CX business class is difficult. I played with Alaska app to search a flight one year in advance and there is no business class seat available from SFO to HKG.

Hi Max! Can I get some help with booking a flight to hk with my capital one miles? From the video I get that it takes 85,000 miles to book it (which if you convert the amount from hk to usd it is $300 something) but is that how you calculate the worth? I was calulating it since it uses 85,000 miles from my capital one miles (and capital one miles is 100 miles is $1) wouldn't it tech mean I paid $850 this? I am trying to go from JFK to HK, HK to Taiwan, Taiwan back to JFK. Thanks!

I actually searched this yesterday Cathay Pacific has VERY limited award space open to partner airlines like AA or Alaska. Sometimes if you search on Cathay’s website they open more award availability to Cathay Asia miles members.

@@MaxMilesPoints I guess if I can find it available for mile redemption on any oneworld member airlines’ website, I can just call Alaska Airlines to try redeem it. Alaska don’t have it on their website, but able to redeem with phone call without phone booking fee. Weird.

Most sign up bonuses will not be enough to book business class. You have to do a monthly spend to add to the bonus.

Is first class available on those flights?

If you can get it to price out on Cathay it would be 85k That much distance flown would fall into the Ultra Long Range distance band which is 85k

Search one way LAX to MNL . You won’t be able to do a stopover in Hong Kong on a one way ticket.
