Qualified Aircraft Engineer here: Gavin’s right. Basically the starboard (right wing) fuel tanks were over filled, fuel then enters a surge tank at the tip of the wing and it then “leaks” through the overflow valve under the wing. The pilots can tell by their instruments if one tank if fuller than the other and they’ll simply turn on the cross-feed valves to transfer fuel over. The valve also serves as a pressure relief valve during flight. On flights with full wing tanks you can see some fuel venting on takeoff from the same valve. Both of these are very common events and you have nothing to worry about. (Also the “sand” is used to both absorb and contain the fuel. You don’t want to use a barrel as it’ll hold fumes and therefore be HIGHLY flammable). Edit : Spelling

It's interesting that it would've been an issue though as it takes someone to not be paying attention for a while to overfill one of the tanks unless one of the gauges weren't displaying properly and usually there's a vent fill light that would come on to notify someone even further that the tank is overfilled. Personally I've never come across this problem having done quite a few aircraft refuels myself.

41:50 I’m a bartender. Can confirm that you can see if a drink (at least a clear drink) has alcohol in it. Alcohol refracts light in a different way from water, so when they mix they create a bit of a shimmer/blur effect.

Snapes on a plane was literally my favourite joke 10 years ago. I made it the desktop background on the family computer

“Snapes on a plane” was the name of my intermural quidditch team 😆

There is a vent hole on both wings and the center fuselage. The most likely scenario would be the VTO (volumetric top off) valve failed and the fuel kept flowing into the full tank during automatic fueling or The fueling valves had been manually opened and they didn’t shut them off soon enough. It really isn’t a threat to the aircraft’s flight safety, it’s just a massive mess and a mountain of paperwork for all involved.

This, this is the GOLD that I watch RT and Ah content for. So hilarious!!

As someone who works on the B-52. Fuel leaks out of the surge tanks quite often. So yeah, it’s quite normal and nothing to be worried about

Painstaking = Taking Pains = Being excessively thorough.

As a former aircraft mechanic, I can confirm some planes can often leak and still be flyable. There are usually permissible limits in which something is allowed to leak, and it varies by aircraft, location, and/or the owning organization's regulations. Its usually the "where" its leaking from or the "what" its leaking on(or in front of), that usually poses a issue to it's flyable status. In my experience as a fuel systems technician, once the "why" its leaking has been identified; It can usually be put on the back-burner as long as the problem can be immediately rectified or temporarily tended to. At that point more permanent fixes are slated for when the aircraft has downtime for maintenance.

I remember watching RT Podcast as a teen. I joined the U.S Army at 18 now im in college getting ready for med school. Time goes by fast.

I'm a aircraft mechanic that just looks like normal overpressure or overfill venting. That's barely anything, a real concern would be if it wasn't coming from the wing vent holes or if it was dumping many gallons pet minute.

I kid in Texas got arrested for paying their lunch bill in 2 dollar bills. The sheriff handcuffed the kid and I think also arrested the guardian for counterfeiting till the sheriff and the lunch lady found out they were real.

Has gus not been vlogging about his vegan adventure? How is this not a RT doc?

The leak comes from a petcock where fuel is sampled and checked for contamination, mainly water. EVERY flight of every aircraft this happens and occasionally the petcock sticks open and leaks and it usually just takes a couple of cycles to unstick and seal it, but if it can't be unstuck, that cell is drained and the petcock is replaced. 100% normal and nothing to be afraid of :) There are so many other things about flying that passengers know nothing about that would curl your hair worse than this... LOL.

Lol the whole gas leak issue is totally normal. I refuel planes and it happens sometimes, just clean it up and transfer fuel to a different tank.
