HOW TO BLEND CHALK PAINT- Beginner's guide to blended finishes

Today I'm sharing 3 tips for blending chalk paint! I'll demonstrate my blending technique on a recent furniture piece I painted for a client. What tools do I need? What type of paint should I use? What colors work best? I'm answering these questions and reviewing Waverly brand chalk paint and brushes. If you like painting and flipping furniture for a profit, or just want to try this pretty technique for yourself, check out my 3 tips for a pro finish.

I learned something from Mr. Tie Dye. If you want complimentary colors next to one another put in a transition shade. So for red and green use yellow or blue. Put down the color and blend into it. When you load the brushes, one side will be blue and the other red. The other brush will be blue and green. A narrow band can make the transition color almost undetectable.

Pretty good? Who wants "pretty good" for their paint? I want consistent, high quality paint. Is Waverly that kind of paint, or just pretty good? I'm a beginner and really need to know what's best. Thank you for clarifying. I appreciate your work. And someday I hope to be as good as you are. Thanks again.

Hey- thanks for the comment! Chalk Paint can get quite expensive, so when I said Waverly is pretty good, I guess I mean it's a good value. The quality is high-medium and the price is relatively low. Plus it's easier to find than some smaller brands. I think the gold standard is Annie Sloan chalk paint, the originator, but it is significantly more expensive and may be harder to source depending on where you live. Viewers have varying goals and budgets they are able to work within. Hope that helps you find what's perfect for you. Happy painting!!

Hi Amy, I serendipitously came across your video just as I was starting my first blended piece. It was also Waverly red, but thought I would use black as my darker shade until it just turned the red brown. Using the merlot worked way better. Had to make my own as Waverly Merlot was sold out. Your video really helped! Thank you!

Great video! I like that you rotate your brush. I remember learning that as you go across the color wheel to see it as getting grayer- past the middle you may see more of the opposite color. That has always helped me when I gray down a color.

Question I bought a small tear drop trailer the walls and ceiling has been covered with outdoor carpet for speaker boxes and glued on with heavy duty convertible top contact adhesive. The fabric carpet is a dark gray makes in very dark and not welcoming. I am wanting to paint over it since removing it would be horrible and a lot of work. What is the best way to do this if possible? and If I can what is the measurements from and paint and thinning it down. Thanks

  • @amydillardGypsySoul

Hmmm are you painting furniture and using latex paint? Or more like fine art on canvas using acrylic paint in tubes? Either way my best guess is you are having trouble because acrylic paints dry super fast (so does chalk paint but you can keep spraying it with water because it's so thick.) I think I'd try an additive that slows down your drying time so you have a longer window to manipulate the paint. If you are using a can of latex acrylic from the hardware store, there's a product called Floetrol which keeps your paint "flowing" longer. For artist's acrylic paints there will be something similar if you ask at an art supply store. These additives are usually milky white when you mix them in but they dry clear. That way you only need to buy one product and mix it into any paint you are using. (You can try spraying lightly with water the same way I did in this video, but too much water will make your acrylic paints drip and run. But try it first because it's free LOL!) Good luck and thanks for watching!!

@@amydillardGypsySoul WOW.. thank you for answering so quickly. and giving so much into. That's so nice of you. I paint furniture. I just finished a 3 drawer night stand & am working on an old cabinet that my brother kept his 78s in. I forgot about that stuff that extends drying time for paints. Thank you for the reminder. I keep trying & trying different things. It's always blotchy. I'm trying to blend darker around some edges.. oh.. like yours in that incredible wine/magenta blend you did. UGH. Thank you for your help. I'll get some floetrol- see if that helps.
