How To Belay With A Grigri: Top Rope Basics
Спорт
How to Belay with a Grigri is one of the most important skills you should learn for climbing, even top-rope climbing.
The extra safety that Grigri provides while climbing makes it one of the best devices that you should consider while looking for a belay device.

Thanks for watching this video, I hope it was helpful. How long have you been climbing and what made you decide to get a Grigri?

I’ve been climbing for 6ish months and I want to get into lead climbing, but would like to have the extra safety measure of a grigri

Helpful! I bought the Grigri because it was on sale and I had expiring REI dividends. I like that I learned the fundamentals on the ATC and that it's really light on my belt. However, I like that the Grigri adds an extra element of safety to address the unexpected and that it allows you to suspend your climber with very little effort. The ATC requires a surprising bit of energy to keep a climber in place while resting. Definitely a welcomed addition for the $60 I spent out of pocket.
Excellent breakdown. I've taken belay courses and you did such a better job describing it than any of the people who ran mine.
Great video! I have come back to this video a few times, as I am mostly a boulderer but recently joined a top roping climbing group at my gym. I love the way you break down the mechanisms into easy to understand, simple explanations. This has helped me so much. I just got my belay card but need more practice/knowledge, thank you Send Edition!
Very informative and well-explained! Thanks a bunch.
Awesome video! I love that you showed the GriGri working with the plate up (dont actually climb that way) It was a very good visual on how it worked!! GriGri is an very useful tool, however, it you want to get into an device like this and cant afford it, I recommend the Beal Birdie. Does the exact same thing and functions nearly identically, and you can pick one up for nearly half the price. I use it and love it.

Ray thanks for watching! I’ve never tried that device but I hope anyone looking for a cheaper option will see your comment :)
Thanks for this video! I’m going to a gym that only uses grigris and I’ve never used one, so it’s nice to have an idea of what to do

Wow. This helped me IMMENSELY. I am a new climber 🧗 I’ve only been climbing in indoor gyms a few times, but these concepts were, I don’t know why…difficult for me 😧 It was hard to take it in a lot of new information about these tools and movements while in such a new environment and in a group. This really helped me because I was able to slow down the video, rewind, and most of all, see it from another perspective. Thank you so much 👍

Nice review. However, if you are new to climbing, I would highly recommend learning to belay on an ATC before (for 2-4 weeks) before using the Grigri. This is to help you understand the basic mechanics and responsibility of the belayer.
Thanks for the video! Ordered a GriGri today. Been using ATC Pilot & it’s nice for what it is but it’s time to upgrade to something a little safer.

I'm glad it was helpful! Have fun climbing with the Grigri, it really does give you peace of mind
Nice Vid! Came across this video after wanting to get back into climbing. I only every used standard ATC's back then. Own one but only ever used it once. Wonder how different it feels with lead climbing and the fact you can't always be removing slack or might need to provide more slack for certain positions or maneuvers with no load? Guessing it can easily be hand pulled by the other climber with the lever pulled?
I'm watching a lot of videos on belaying with the GriGri. I've been climbing about 30 yrs. I don't like the GriGri, but a friend insists on uses it, but not well. Yesterday he dropped me the last few ft of the lower. So I'm looking for a good how to lower video to share with him.
I have a 25 foot tall inflatable rock climb what type of believe would you recommend for this? This is an answer I'm having a very hard time figuring out. If it is a grigri which one should I get? The 2 for the Plus
The dog pooping was the best part lol... joking. Nice video thanks..
Wish my gym in California was open :(

I can not agree with you on the GriGri as the best belay device. Sure, for some climbers/belayers in some situations of course, but not in general. For sure it is a good device, but the underlaying technic is about 30 years old and it has its flaws like you have to (b)lock the cam when giving rope fast or leading the rope over the side of the device when lowering the climber which will twist the rope mantle against its core (btw in the manual Petzl advices against the lowering method you are showing with the rope straight out in front of the device)

Every device has its drawbacks. When it comes to top-rope and lead climbing, however, I haven't found a better or safer device. What device would you recommend?

@@SendEdition There is no better or worse, just more fitting for person and situation. As i wrote, the GriGri may fit for some persons in some situations. And this is the same with all devices. My personal favorit for lead climbing is the Trago Vergo. Giving rope, even very fast, is a dream, without the cost of safety. But it takes getting used to, as the rope goes "the wrong way" through the device and it is held vertically while giving rope. Also I wouldn't recommend it for Toprope. For toproping in climbing gyms, which tend to use bigger ropes (up to 10.5mm+), i prefer the Singing Rock Rama or the Black Diamond ATC Pilot. They work smooth even if the rope is older and plushy. For beginner-education and a very good allrounder for everyone who liked to use a tube (in germany where i come form they are banned from most climbing gyms) my favorit is the Wild Country Revo. Rope handling is even smoother and faster as with a tube, but if everything goes wrong the device will save your b*tt. Until then its centrifugal brake won't bother you. On the contra-side, the Revo is really expensive. It is even the most expensive belay device here in germany (~ 120€; GriGri costs ~70€). Better alternatives to the GriGri are in my option the Camp Matik, as it has a real panic function (not the bad version of the GriGri+) and giving ans taking rope goes very well. The big downside is the roperange as it only should be used up to 10.2mm. The Beal Birdie and the Mad Rock Lifeguard are very much influenced by the GriGri, but make some things better. The rope goes straight through the device. No need to twist it over the side for lowering. Also in case of a fall you definitely won't hold the device in your whole hand, because the rope is not completly encased and you will get your finger burned. This is a big problem with the GriGri, as many people gripping the whole device with their hand to(b)lock the cam for giving rope fast. Giving rope goes a bit better than with the GriGri so blocking the cam is in most cases not neccessary. But the levers on both devices won't work as smooth as the GriGri. You have to get used to lowering with them. A really heavy work horse is the Edelrid Eddy. Very long lever for easy and smooth lowering, double stop panic function and also straight rope guidance. Useable for lead and toprope. But heavy, expensive and not really suitable for outdoor climbing as dust can come into the device and it is very laborious to clean and grease it afterwards. As written before: This only fits for me and my needs in this way, others may have other opinions or experience. I own every device mentioned (and a lot more) and have used them for months and years.

@@belaygear8889 I need to come learn better climbing with you it sounds like!
can I walk with you and talk gri Sri
I guess your climbing partner was struggling as you’re really hoisting them up the route there! On descent, make sure the rope runs over the curved friction plate on the right side
The position of the belayer is how we define the system we’re using. If the belayer is positioned at the top, then it’s top roping. If the belayer is positioned at the bottom, then it’s bottom roping. Common misconception is to assume that it’s called top roping because the ropes at the top. I know a lot of people use it generically though.
