I’m a third year interior architecture and design student and I’m doing my first internship right now actually. I’m so so glad to see your channel because there are not a lot of designers who take the time to educate others on their profession this way! When I first made the switch to design school from biomedical sciences I was so let down by the lack of designers online sharing their knowledge. It can be a very secretive field. I wanted to compliment you, and say that I really admire you and hope to be as successful and gracious as you one day. I love the ‘day in the life’ videos bc it gives a real perspective for those interested, like myself. My internship right now is strictly residential and is limited to a lot of decorating, which is something I am not particularly drawn to. So, seeing your channel has definitely reenergized me because what you do is so similar to what we do in school, and I’m thrilled to see it in action in the professional world. Ps. You remind me of Sandra Bullock. You are both rock stars

Peace Maker I just watched the two year old video posted on Google by the young woman and wanted to point out that to say that “picking paint and fabric is boring” is an unfair and blanketed statement. I am a space planner by nature and that is something you’ll learn about yourself during your studies or on your internship maybe even your first job! You’re right, nothing about interior design is boring... “if you love your job you’ll never work a day in your life!”

@@rozenart5768 You said it right. My love for ID starts from just decorating, picking furniture pieces, paint and fabric and it's not boring at all. It actually can be hard if you really want to excel at that. I think every task, as simple as it may sound, has many different levels. Karin herself is not an excellent decorator just yet. She knows how to do a project from start to finish but I feel like her soft furnishing aspect is still lacking.

Not sure if this applies to Canada, but for viewers in the US, check out your local community college! Several in California offer ID certificates that will prepare you for the certification exam. I originally saw a counselor who showed me the starting path then I ran into the ID lead a few weeks later and she helped tailor the courses I need to take to make my first steps! I'll be starting ID classes in the fall or spring of next year and I am very excited! I'm also working on my Business Administration degree with finance emphasis for the business side of what I want to do. I don't think you necessarily have to go to design school as long as you get the besic certification, I think the majority of your skills and knowledge will come from hands on experience at whatever firm you decide to work with. I hope someone finds this helpful. Good luck!

Hey Hunn, You might want to go to CCIDC.org because you can take the exam but that doesn't mean you'll meet the qualifications to get certification to legally be called an interior designer. You have to meet a minimum amount of years in school/in the field experience.. I also want to be an interior designer and Im going to school in California. I would double check on what you've been told just to make sure your good to go love :) (Meet the minimum Qualifications to sit for the IDEX California® Exam, do not qualify to complete certification after passing the IDEX. CCIDC will keep application and test results on file until Candidate provides proof of completion of remaining qualifications to certify. Candidates must meet one of the following minimum qualifications: Minimum of 40 Semester Core Units from accredited design program (60 Quarter Units) - OR - More than 5 but less than 8 years of diversified design experience.) I pulled this from the site for you as just an FYI (this is only a small part)

Love this! I'm from Dallas, TX. Started working in the design industry when I was 16 years old! I took inventory of memo samples for a showroom that manufactured furniture. Worked my way up to an Auto Cad technician. They paid for my design degree and expenses. School was awesome but there's nothing like experience. I was there for 10 years! Tomorrow marks my 6 month anniversary since I've been on my own as an interior designer. Currently looking for a small office space and you all give me so much inspiration!!! Love it all! Designing is everything to me.

Thank you so much Karin! This video was extremely helpful. I'm about to start an interior design/decorating program in January here in Charleston SC. I'm a wife and mom and they offer classes in the evening. It's only for certifications, but after watching your video it has really encouraged me that it really isn’t as important as long as you learn drafting and all the crucial fundamentals of design. Your personal story was huge. I had a teacher in culinary who for some reason “had it out for me”. For some reason she just did not like me and even said mean things to me. It was horrible, so I felt your pain!! However, it was like a comfort to hear I wasn’t the only one who experienced something like that!! Can’t wait to continue to watch your videos. They are so inspiring!!

Karin, I love to hear about entrepreneurs back grounds, how they started and what inspired them. The divinity seeds or sparks of light at the beginning that ignited the pathway. The fact that you did not finish your second year of design school is so characteristic of the risk taking entrepreneurial spirit. You had the vision, trust and confidence combined with your job experience at the time to learn the rest by doing. It is so interesting in life when we are presented with signs and situations that flag us to take action and make a change! You most defiantly took action in the right direction! Thank you for all that you share. Your inspiration is electric. +++ (Now not at all to dissuade design students or future design students reading this from pursuing graduation because the knowledge is so ESSENTIAL as you mentioned and NEEDED for job acceptance if you are not able to get it anywhere else.)

Hi Karin! You are such an inspiration! I am starting my own interior design business and have been thinking I am over my head, but you inspire me everyday to keep going. I have a full time job, working on getting my interior design certificate, while already starting my own business with the opportunity of a side project that led to another project. I am excited and I know this will take a lot of effort, consistency, and resilience, and I try to remind myself of that, when I have doubts and wonder if I am way over my head. THANK YOU SO MUCH for sharing your journey!

Love your blogs! please keep doing them. BTW I'm from Argentina, and we got courses that last a few months but the Interior Designer career as I took lasted 4 years... so when people ask me "do you need to go to Interior Design school to be an Interior Designer" I'm like YES! if you really care about it and it is your passion, 2-4 years of school won't kill you... there are so many fun and interesting things to learn there :)

Loved this Karen and love the day in the life of! Absolutely agree about employability if you have a technical background. So many courses/degrees and diplomas are design based in our industry and students pay a fortune for information that doesn't lead to employable skills, sadly that's why there are so many unemployed interior design graduates out there. Love your stuff! xx

Karin, thank you so much for this video. It was full of great tips. Also, I don't get bored with your Day in the Life type videos. It's really interesting to see the variety that you have in your work day. Can I ask you to consider doing a "what's in my bag" video? I'm interested in knowing what designers carry around with them, and what you consider to be essential tools of your trade. Your wheelie bag always looks really heavy! Another idea for a video could be your systems (e.g. how your samples are filed) and work flow practices in your office. I'm currently studying interior design in Australia & I find your content so informative and interesting. Thank you to you and your team for all the work you put into your channel 👏🏼

It's motivating! I am interior design student, at first it feels hard. So many tasks, and so many events to get more relations with people, so we don't have so much time to chill, or even sleep. It takes only 2 hours per day for me to sleep, yeah and I got the good eye-bags for an appointment :") but it's fun! I really enjoy this kind of daily routines

I love the style of your videos and I think this video is really amazing and informative. I'm an interior design student in the US and my design program is CIDA (counsel for interior design) accredited. I think it's important to look for an accredited college, research ASID and other accredited organizations and get involved because this field is all about networking! I like that you mentioned going to a school that is savvy in technical drawings because that is so important, Otherwise you will not be able to design! Another important tip is if your school doesn't teach you about building codes, definitely start to learn them. It will help you out immensely in the long run! This field is so dynamic and I love it, but you need to be positive you want to get into it because it is a lot of work. :) I hope this comment helped!

same for Canada too! I wish she would have mentioned that part because regulations are changing and theres a huge push for designers to be able to sign off on their own drawings. I am in a CIDA accredited program as well and it's not easy at, AT ALL.

MrMclovinJunior very true! It’s so challenging and time consuming and there’s more to it than people realize. I mean I learn about construction methods and materials, lighting, codes, and of course, sustainable design along with a bunch of other topics most people don’t think of when they think of interior design. In the states you have to pass the NCIDQ (industry standard exam) to become a professionally recognized designer. You don’t HAVE To, but to be of a certain level to work on higher projects and up your pay(which who wouldn’t want to??) is the way to go. Very important stuff I felt like sharing, cuz even I didn’t know of this when I began school!

Isabella Ramirez hello, thank you very much for your comment, actually I already have a degree from civil engineering but would like to move to interior designing , I would be very grateful if someone help me with interior design fundamentals. IF you think there some materials from any website or books so I can get it before starting school I will be really appreciated.

Great video Karen! Totally not bored at all. I love the rawness and authenticity behind the day in the life videos. I’ve taken BCIT’s interior design weekend workshop and absolutely loved it. It was nice to see that you have staff that have taken interior design programs at other schools not just BCIT. Sometimes I feel that there can be a bit of a judgement or stigma behind taking a program at private colleges and non private but its employers like you that see beyond someone’s education choice. I love that about you because I totally think it’s your work ethic at the end of the day that will make you successful. What are your thoughts on online interior design programs for the working professionals? I’d love to know your thoughts because you are in the industry and you have people working for you. Love and blessings to the House of Bobby Team for everything you all do! 🙏🏽💝
