This sounds like most careers in the arts. I went for my MFA in creative writing, and the story is pretty similar, except there are more adjacent career opportunities than your field. I am glad to see your passion; it is much needed in the arts.

This was insanely helpful, thank you. I’ve finally accepted I have to go back to college if I want to do anything related to this field. Luckily I already have friends and connections in the field, including an internship coordinator at the Smithsonian, so it sounds like I’m already set up as well as I can be.

I'm in my senior year of a BFA right now, and I recently found conservation through just researching museum positions. Everything about the field sounds so amazing I love the problem solving aspect, the research, the passion for preserving and sharing human creativity, all of it. I really want to get into this field but I fear the long marathon and pre program limbo stage. This video was super helpful though so thanks a ton!

I wish I had known about this profession when I was in college. I’m 81 now, and have known for all of my life that I’m not a real artist. I have good manual skills and an eye for color matching, but not very much true creativity. I think I would have been very good at this, because I love analysis and doing repetitive picky things. But now? Not able to. 😢 thanks for this video.

Germany is quite similar except it seems to be easier to get into undergrad/grad because it isn't really competitive. My personal advice (especially for germany) is: do your research!

i just started looking into art conservation and im looking to go back to school with my previous gpa being low i know my path to being a conservator will be long. im curious if it would be hard to get an internship off the bat? what do internships look for in applicants?

It depends on the internship. Having good hand skills is paramount however, so experience with art/bookbinding/sewing etc is important to show. Finding an internship can be very difficult but everyone starts somewhere.
