Okay, one good thing about being a witcher. You naturally attract magical hoes. Not even kidding. Witchers apparently give sorceresses a pleasant tingly feeling when in close proximity. So it works in your favor if you're trying to score with a hot sorceress.

There are still active Witcher schools making more Witchers, if I remember correctly the Cat school is still active, the Griffin schools' Witchers left to the north where sentiment was more welcoming and the Bear school had some Witchers start trying to revive their school. In one of the epilogues of the books, supposedly sometime in the future "Witchering" started reviving due to a sharp increase of monsters.

Griffin's ( Gryfa) school was destroyed by magicians. Only one witcher survived the assault on the fortress and several were on the trail at the time. The bear( Niedźwiedźa) school practically killed itself because they were too aggressive, did not cooperate with other schools and were very closed. Viper ( Żmija) school was destroyed by the Nilgardians because they didn't want anyone to know that they were behind the creation of witchers from this school. The Manticore school was destroyed after the Zerikania royal house was killed. The Crane (Zurawia) School is generally non-existent, just like virtually all other information about other schools. Most things were created for games, comics or fan adaptations, and I won't even mention the crap from Netflix because it's an abomination. Sapkowski did not write much about Witcher schools in his books.

I personally feel that the trail of the mountains is counter intuitive to creating more witchers. As it sometimes comes down to pure luck to survive. Or facing against a monster no apprentice could hope to defeat If something like a leshen or royal wyvern happened to inhabit the area during the trial then none of the apprentices have a chance against it. It would make much more sense if the trial consisted of pitting them against increasingly difficult monsters that they are likely to face early in their careers. Ghouls, drowned, wyverns and the like. Having them fight common beast in a controlled environment would weed out the weak and reduce the chances of losing an apprentice with high potential to simple bad luck. Thus wasting years of training and resources. Just because an apprentice stumbles on a slick rock near a stream and smashes his head in while dodging the claws of a monster doesn't mean he was weak or defective. How many times has Geralt survived only through luck? And he's considered the strongest Witcher ever. Luck should not be a factor in creating new witchers.

  • @xanxv1246

    @xanxv1246

    11 ай бұрын

surviving is the maximum goal of the trial, an apprentice by that point has already learned everything he needs to know about monsters to know how to evade them. The forest is just next to Kaer Morhen so it's as controled as the witchers there wanted the forest to be, real life are not controled situations like the ones you described, a lot of times a witcher would take on jobs that he has no idea what beast he is going to face since the commonfolk would probably call anything a dragon or a werewolf same way your mother calls all pokemon Pikachu. The trial of the mountain is meant to open the mind of the witchers to the uncertainty of their job and how they cant never give something for granted. Luck is always a factor from the beggining to the end of the trials, and even after all of that, the graduated witcher can die in their first job by a ghoul and that won't mean the witcher was bad, just shows how lethal that life is. Main reason why even with the increased life-span of a witcher most of them won't live more than a regular person.

@@deussalt4479 Another way to look at this is: quality over quantity, plus avoidance of rebellion. Witchers were never supposed to be a veritable army, only a small school of exceptionally gifted and deadly warriors. To therefore ease up on the final trial is counter-intuitive. Having more witchers around isn't really a good idea, as they could become dangerous to their masters. What isn't mentioned in this video, is that witchers weren't born as an independent school of "warrior monks". They were created by mages specifically to be the best possible foil against specifically monsters. They aren't meant to be an army, just a manageable group of efficient experts in their specific field. So having the trials be largely exceptionally deadly, with a sizeable chunk of hardcore training AND arbitrary luck involved, both ensures the amount of witchers at any given point isn't too small to be a waste of resources, and isn't too big in order to be a genuine threat to the faction of mages that created them. This largely contributed to the fact that when kaer morhen was attacked by a band of commoners with pitchforks, the witchers of the wolf were largely wiped out. They were never meant to be sizeable, and always used as a final resort for monsters. If they should ever become rebellious towards their creators, they could then "easily" be taken out.

@@RedFloyd469 This is a very good point! The trial of the mountain also annoyed me as some sort of grimderp story beat that seemed to just waste Witcher trainees that had already had investment into them without actually teaching them anything. However, it being used as a culling method makes more sense rather than it just being a place for them to die so the story can double down on how lethal it is to make a witcher.

Not neccesarily. If you look at the schools as basic rpg classes (cat and viper= rogue, bear=tank/warrior, manticore=mage, Wolf = jack of all trades, etc...) Then you could make a case for having a witcher game with a protagonist whose skills are based around a skill tree which you unlock in a similar vein to how classic mmorpg's do it. Now I know absolutely nothing about coding, but given the technology available now or in the near future, and the already existing precedent of mmorpg class builds, I don't think it's entirely undoable.

From a programming perspective I'm sure it's not a huge deal. I think it's more that the sale point of the Witcher is the character Geralt and his story, so they'd probably be hesitant about throwing money at a game about the world instead. I for one love fantasy worlds, the minor characters, lands, cultures, monsters, magic etc. usually more than the stories of the protagonists themselves.

If they ever make another Witcher game, I'd love for it to be a fully role-play Witcher experience. Going through training, the trial, and picking which school you are a part of. I also feel like there should be very real restrictions based on which school you choose and clear advantages vs disadvantages. Example, the school of the viper would excel at assassinating's monsters inside cities but is worse at fighting in the wilderness than the bear school. They should also increase the lethality of it all, similar to darksouls. Getting raked by claws while wearing armor shouldn't be terrible but getting pounced on by a gryphon the size of a van should be fatal. Put a far greater importance on the alchemy section as well, by greatly buffing the affects of positions/oils/poisons/traps. Regarding signs, according to the book they are actually really a weak rudimentary form of magic, unless maybe your are from a school that specializes in magic.

I'm pretty sure he's been dead around 100 years by the time of Blood and Wine. His research could however be used by someone else to start creating new witchers. Call me crazy but if I could choose my witcher school I'd go with the school of the bear (just a fun side note)

The next Witcher game should be a prequel about the first Witchers. How they were created, how the Schools were formed, how the Continent first employed them, how they researched monsters and curses, how they exchanged information. You would start the Prologue as a child in training, going through all the Trials and seeing others die around them. And the main Acts would have decades-long timeskips between them, so that you could gain new scars and knowledge, see friends or lovers die of old age, and cities and villages expand. And recruiting and training the next generation of witchers would be an important part of the story.

Basically 2 or 3 out of 10 survive the trail, those that do get an increased life span. Some where between double to triple the life. You become super human with incredible speed strength and reflexes. You are immune to all poisons and diseases. And To top it off you can survive fatal wounds by drinking potions. All together seems worth it. Like how long do people last in the Witcher universe. It’s very common for parents to lose a child and commonplace for them to simply send them off to the woods to die because of to many mouths to feed. Look at it like this. If you have a kid in the Witcher universe, it seems very likely he won’t make it to 50. Due to plague, war, bandits, monsters and everything else. The quality of life isn’t there for 99% of the people it seems. Being a Witcher means never worrying about these things, being able to take on many bandits at once. If I was a kid I think I’d beg to become a Witcher. Better to risk it for a 30% chance at becoming a super powered being then living a miserable full life if farming. That is if the bandits, or monsters or disease don’t get me first.

The mutations don't make you invincible though. In Witcher 3 Lambert mentions how some witchers get through the trials only to die in some swamp to a random swarm of drowners. Then of course there's the racism and bigotry you would experience as a mutant, not to mention the shitty pay the monster hunter profession provides. Basically you would have to endure being hated and harassed by the majority of the population while risking your life almost every day, practically living in poverty while working on dangerous contracts that pay you relatively little. So it's still not exactly an ideal life.

The wolf school for example goes heavy on the good old longswords, while the viper school teaches to fight with 2 daggers and the bear school relies much more on heavy crossbows and therefor trains the apprentices more on the defense and not agility. Also from what you can see in the games the other witcher from the other schools show no other or new mutations which geralt doesnt have, even then geralt has the most abnormal mutations with his magic being far superior than that of any other witcher because his mother was a sorceress

I don't think it's canon each school use differents mutagenes. They just have differents philosophies and fighting styles.

could a witcher seek training from all schools and undergo all trials from each school if he was able to convince enough members of each school to let him?

I wonder what is the point of dangerous training if you can just go for monsters to train. It's better to die after killing 2 monsters than dying while training.

There are two types of kids who started the Witcher trials: The ones who dyed quickly and the ones who wished they died quickly
