How to become a respected ballet dancer | DW Documentary
In his village in Haryana, Pawan Kumar’s family wants him to get a job in a factory. But in his heart, he dreams of becoming something different, something “you don’t do as a man” - a ballet dancer. Making a living from ballet might seem unrealistic and gender norms discourage him from giving it his all. Internationally acclaimed choreographer Ashley Lobo invites Pawan to his studio in Mumbai to challenge Pawan’s idea of what being a ballet dancer really means. Can he really make it as a professional dancer? Through Ashley’s tests, he also gets to know the hurdles of the industry itself.
Find a job, have a family, make money - what if this is not your dream, but your parent’s idea and your community’s norms? To free yourself, go on a journey. With the help of your role model, you will find out: can you take charge of your own life and make your own choices? DW presents 'Choices: Dare to Dream'.

It's very difficult for a young person if your family doesn't understand or approve of your goals. It's even worse if your entire culture sees no value in it.
Please do a update on this very talented guy. We all love to know if he gets into this dance company. 😍
Indians are very hard working. Just give him the opportunity & he will find success.🙂
Idk why people think ballet is not masculine. I'd argue it's even more masculine than just pumping irons at the gym because ballet requires immense discipline, dedication, and commitment to engineer the human body to do amazing things. It's incredibly athletic and requires combination of mental and physical strength that no averge people can handle. He's got the drive and passion. He'll succeed.

And so does ballroom dancing. Any MAN that learns how to live beautifully and how to carry a woman in a dance is a heck of a MAN. Pumping iron is stupid. Have them cut wood. I head it burns the most calories of all exercises
Good to see the dad have a change of heart.
Loved watching him dance! Beautiful and strong and impressive. Hope he goes far.
A truly lovely moving dancer story that should inspire many generations of young to take up dance or the arts. High thanks to DW for this heart stirring video ❤️❤️

He knows what he is training for. He will definitely succeed!
❤ I hope he realizes his dreamers of dancing. Everyone is born with a talent and a passion for it 😊
I always admire people doing what they love im a manager at a warehouse and they money is ok but I’m miserable there
I have much respect for male ballet dancers bc those flexes and movements aren't easy to do. It takes practice and dedication.
So joyful, wishing him strength and every success 🙏😊💙
BEST OF LUCK PAWAN. FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS WITH ZEAL AND PASSION. I AM SURE YOU WILL BE A GOOD BELLE DANCER.
Wishing him all the success! Please update us on his development along his practice.
It was a wonderful documentary coverage shared by an excellent DW documentary channel ... about someone struggles for gaining his dreams for becoming a ballet dancer's...Bellwood always introduces Indian 🇮🇳 peoples dancing in the street under heavy rains 🌧 as inherited manner ( reminding how much Bellwood movies 🎬 are acting far from reality of Indian population & their sufferings )

Keep sharing stories that must be told. 🎙
thanks for sharing. he is not alone.
Anyone who dares to dream and work hard for it certainly gets successful Lv u dear Love from Pakistan
Wish him the best!!! Hope there is an update!!
Amazing
Good luck young man 👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻
He will be very good, but good already and his dancing is also good.
Best wishes dude..🤞🤞
Where do people get the idea that dance isn't masculine?
Wow 👏🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻✊
As mentioned, it takes years of professional training to get the polish and technique that's required for live performance.
Ballet is almost like an abusive and manipulating girlfriend that you need to impress to keep their relationship even though it hurts you physically and mentally. I have seen people eventually quitting and looking for some other dance forms that are more natural and earthy.
Best of luck. Do we know what training he has already? Anyway we can help? I am a dancer and can see he has a dream! I would like to help him more if i can.
Be what u want to be
Seems the young man needs some solid training to prepare the body for a dance career. Im sure Ashley can guide him well if the young man proves himself.
first haryana guy i have seen on random internet video who doesn't look like wwe wrestlers lol

Yes lol😂 first time 😂😂😂😂 I also shocked 😂
One query to Mr. Lobo. Would u put any other guy through similar tests? I guess it was a test for Pawan's background. And I am not too happy with that
New Billy Elliot? 🤩

Just what I thought of!
I enjoyed his dance. I'd call it street version of that boring city version.
This young man has NOTHING to prove to a male dominated society, there are a multitude of machismo males throughout the world who just don't get it, he isn't going to change their minds and that's ok....The dedication and passion comes from within , it is not a competition except with yourself and that's the beauty of Ballet !
reminds me of billy elliot
How ironic- ballet was originated from men- I think anyway 🤔
Would’ve been better if you just create a genuine documentary instead of a gimmicky cinematic one 🙏🏻
I don't entirely understand why Indiana should be interested in ballet.

Indiana? Then you don’t understand the passion of dancing.
I don't know much about India but why do they insert random words/phrases in English? Do they not have vocabulary for those words in Hindi (or whatever language they're speaking)? Also, when they shake their heads from side to side, do they mean yes or no?
@TheStockwell

Probably for the same reason English is peppered with words and expressions of French, German, and other nation's origin. 😐

IIRC when Indians do that head wobble, it's roughly equivalent to acknowledging what you're saying to me. Of course someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Up down nod - YES Left right shake - NO Tilt side to side - OK
Young men today need a lot of help if you push men to elevate women everyone will suffer.
Doing this won't get you anything in India. Study get money go to west and persue your dream. Money first.
