    Currently in grad school for counseling psychology and am going for my PsyD afterwards at my institution. Although my institution doesn’t have tracks available for their PsyD program, would it still be possible to get the training and certifications necessary to become a neuropsychologist during a fellowship or internships required to complete doctoral school? I think I should also point at that while in graduate school for counseling psych, I am looking to complete my practicum hours within a neuropsych field placement. Do you think this would also help in future since I pretty much have no neuro background in undergrad?

    Exactly! Getting my neuropsych experience in practicum, internship, or fellowship is the way to go even though your program may not have a neuro track! It’s also possible to be working in the field and get supervision from a neuropsychologist if you like to do neuropsych work but didn’t get experience through internship or fellowship

    @@philsguidetopsyd This was my question! Thank you for asking this! The program I am looking to has PsyD for Clinical Psychology but I wasn't sure how I could become an NP without the focus. So once you obtain your PsyD and complete internship or fellowship, you then complete the board certification to become an NP?

  • @philsguidetopsyd

    Yes! 1 year internship and 2 year post doc/fellowship, then board certification exam (oral and written) to become a neuropsychologist.

    Im looking to take BA psy and Master of neuropsychology. But do hospital and other institutions require a doctoral degree to employ a neuropsychologist? What if I cant complete till PhD? Do master degree is enough?

    In the u.s. you need a doctorate to practice as a neuropsychologist. A masters is more equivalent to a psychometrician that does testing but doesn’t diagnose.

    Hi, so I just graduated with my masters in clinical counseling psychology and am interested in attending Nova’s PsyD program with their neuropsychology track. Do you know whether I would need any experience in that specific area (neuropsychology) in order to be accepted? This is my first time applying for doc programs so I’m not sure how it works or what to expect. Also, do GPAs matter in doc programs? Because I have a 4.0 GPA and was a member of an honors society while I was in grad school. I was also a member of the mental health committee for grad students at my school. Would any of this information matter? Would it enhance my application? I feel like I have a great chance of getting into this school. Just don’t know whether they would accept me for the neuropsychology track. Sorry if what I’m saying doesn’t make sense. I’m still learning about the process. I guess my main question here is, do you have to have experience in the track that you’re interested in or does that not matter.

    Great questions! Honestly, most programs understand that prospective students will probably have limited experience regarding neuropsych training unless you got a little bit of that in your masters. I wouldn't worry too much about that, if you have any training as a psychometrician or giving tests/assessments, certainly highlight that! If you can voice your interests in neuropsychology in a personal statement, maybe even shadow a neuropsychologist and get a letter of recommendation from them, and show your interest in the track in the interview you will be competetive, especially with your high gpa. To answer your overall question, it doesn't hurt to have experience in the track your applying to, it will probably help, but its not the end of the world if you don't as long as you communicate clearly in the application process your interest in the track and your motivation for it, maybe even giving a summary in your personal statement about how you can envision yourself as a future neuropsychologist, working with certain populations, etc. If you need any further help crafting a personal statement reach out via my website, philsarpong.com - but hope that helps!

    What the difference with PhD and Psyd? Isn’t PhD the research part of it? I want to work directly with them but don’t want the debt of psyd

    PhD schools focus more on research. But PsyD and PhD can do the same thing once licensed. It’s true there does tend to be more debt with PsyD so that’s something to look out for!

    If we study this, Does Neuropsychology has lifetime work purposes??

  • @philsguidetopsyd

    @philsguidetopsyd

    3 ай бұрын

    It depends on what you mean by lifetime purposes, like relevance in the clinical work? I think most neuropsychologists would agree that the field is only getting bigger and staying relevant within the medical community
