How to Beat the SHARKS in NO WAY UP

Фильм және анимация

If you hopped on a plane, thinking you scored a sweet deal for a well-deserved getaway in sunny Cabo, only to wind up in a pocket of air trapped INSIDE YOUR PLANE on the bottom of the ocean floor instead, what would you do?
I’m going to break down the mistakes made, what you should do, and how to beat Sharks on a Plane in No Way Up.

Hey everyone, Pilot here. Birdstrikes as well general issues that lead to needing to fly OEI (One Engine Inoperative) are the single most trained thing in simulators for ATP pilots (the type of pilots who fly you for an airline). Airliners can *EASILY* fly on one engine, and while we may need to descend to an altitude where there is enough power to manage it, it will be okay. Flying is one of the safest methods of travel, and while it is totally acceptable and natural to feel fear or anxiety, don't let that stop you from flying with us. Edit: And had I watched the video for 40 seconds longer, I would have heard/seen him say the exact same thing I said.

I cant say how correct this is, because it has been over a decade since i last certified, but AFAIK if the air pocket you are in is surface pressure (like in the crashed plane) you could swim out of the water and up to the surface as long as you properly execute an emergency ascent. The bends occur when you dive because you are breathing compressed air for an extended period of time.

You can also use the amount of light they can see through the windows to estimate their depth. By 120 feet, saltwater will have absorbed nearly all visible red light, so considering they can still very much see the color red, (helpfully demonstrated by a few of their fellow passangers) it's safe to assume they can't be any deeper than 120 feet. Still dangerous for sure, but survivable if they move quick!

So common in fact that most of the modern engines are designed in such a way that if a bird is sucked into the engine, it damages only the fan blades (the biggest ones in front) but then flow around the engine, not through the engine core. So unless you hit a huge flock which damages almost all the fan blades, you should be in fact fine

An airplane can fly on one engine, and if all engines fail it essentially becomes a glider. The record a passager plane has glided without engines and landed is over 100 miles. The only way this movie is unbeaten is if both the pilot and copilot had no training and the engine safety measures failed. Also I know dcs is less of a concern for freediving, but I dont know what the rules would be for trapped in an airpocket. There is a chance though that they would be okay had they left the plane quickly. Assuming they could make it to the surface.

It is not the bird itself, but its residue blocking the pressured fuel line. It creates stutters and makes the engine unusable, unless you want to use a bomb to further fly. But what would be more concerning would be the aerodynamics of the jet fins, at that altitude they were flying maybe 600 miles, not even steel can withstand a 3kg solid object at that speed (not to mention that Boeing is known to use magnesium fins in their jet engines). It would create a non-centered momentum and rip away the planes wing if kept powered on

I've seen every explains video since this beginning, and its had its ups and downs. Mostly ups! This video is the first in a while that feels like its getting back to what makes the channel great, taking the time to break down situations in a bit more depth and doing the google work for me about situations I should never need to know anything about. Keep it up :)

Yep then they would suffer the effect HACE ( HIGH Altitude Cerebral Edema ) aka brain swelling due to a lack of oxygen, it's what the climbers who climb Everest go through when they don't use oxygen and Everest is what...29k-30k feet high

  • @-Bill.

    @-Bill.

    13 күн бұрын

@@chrismeyers5963 Actually no, it is sustained time at those altitudes which will cause edema as the body is attempting to acclimate. Short-times at that altitude (i.e. the time it takes the pilots to descend to below 14000ft) will simply lead to hypoxia and unconsciousness but most would immediately regain consciousness as soon as they descended (assuming they didn't put on their mask) Military and commercial pilots can take training which exposes them to those altitudes without oxygen to allow them to experience their personal hypoxia symptoms. Some people get sleepy, some start laughing, but knowing their symptoms can help them possibly recognize a hypoxia event in case the alarms didn't work. That obviously wouldn't be allowed if they could develop cerebral and pulmonary edema that quickly.

I wouldnt suggest blasting metalica, you would need music with a higher pitch. lower freqency sounds attract sharks! I remember an old episode of flipper where they had a radio in the water and it attracted a shark and flipper had to save the day! I mean the information is factual and not just from flipper but fun fact?

It's one thing to survive when it depends on one's own individual choices, but the entire situation is down to sheer luck. First of all, you need to survive a plane crash. Then you need to have been in the right seating so you didn't drown when it crashed, or been thrown from the plane WHILE it was crashing. Then you have to survive slowly running out of oxygen while being unable to leave due to being surrounded by sharks, PLUS surviving the stupidity of the passengers. Then you have to basically swim through an unknown number of man-eating sharks using an air tank that's not designed for the situation, while also getting a fatal case of the bends. And then on top of all of that, you have to be found and rescued in the middle of the night, surrounded by open ocean, all before the sharks follow you and eat you anyway, or you die of the bends. And that's not mentioning your rescuer's ability to save you from said bends on the way back to base. This whole movie is UNBEATEN in my opinion.

27:30 im pretty sure that playing metal is considered to draw in sharks. likely has to do with the vibrations this kind of music sends through the water, though i dont think we fully understand why atm also the sound of plastic bottles and aluminum foil crumbling under water WILL draw in all kinds of sharks, that is a often used technique in shark diving.

Pilots would have gotten a crew alert message as soon as that engine got warm. Then they would pull the fire shutoff. Also cool thing about an engine fire on a commercial plane airliner, is that the the engine is designed to burn itself off the plane, so in theory the engine will just fall off to prevent fire and shrapnel from spreading. Assuming they can’t put the fire out.

They wouldn’t have died from decompression sickness. The air pressure in the plane would be of the same atmospheric pressure as above sea level due to that pressure being trapped in the plane as it sinks. Just like how sailors in a submarine don’t have to worry about decompression sickness and same with free divers who dive to extreme depths on a single breath of air.
