"I am a Geiko, an artist of ancient Kyoto. Not some plebian entertainer of a random city like Tokyo!" - a geiko, probably

It is funny people look down upon Plebian. It was a great thing to be a citizen of the Roman empire. That is exactly what plebian means. To not be one, was meant you were a slave or a foreigner.

@GutsFreedom agree with the original context of the word denoting to citizenship. The word has evolved and overtime has become understood as "ordinary" or "common."

There's this movie called "Lady Maiko" ("Maiko wa Lady") that's somewhat relevant to this.. 😂 It waxes lyrical over the difference between Kyoto and other places. It takes a while before you realize what the movie actually IS. 😂
Wow this is a pro tip! Thanks! Kyoto is amazing! It was an honor to be able to visit this city!

From what I've gathered, Kyoto people seem to be the most grudging and passive-aggressive people in Japan. Seems like hating on non-Kyotans is real common. This along with the "asking if you'd like more tea" thing.

I was well treated in Kyoto but then I wasn't loud or obnoxious, and I knew the culture in advance. I wasn't there for Instagram.

This makes Kyoto sound like the Japanese equivalent of Paris if it's true. Rich in national culture, but very snobbish and rude about it.
@shawnbell6392

@@SageArdor May be the case but in Kyoto a visitor is not likely to be treated with an attitude. If you live somewhere that gets cruise ships you have a sense of what tourism throws at Kyoto so my point is to appreciate the opportunity to see other places and other cultures. As I said, I was treated fine in Kyoto but I respect the culture. Any underlying views there are inside of Kyoto is a matter between residents and the rest of Japan.

You have got to be very careful when you say "how to be pissed". In British English that means, how to get drunk.
says something in kyoto ONCE

I thought this would be about that tourist lady hounding the very uncomfortable geiko in the street with her camera.
Nowadays, I don’t think it takes very much to piss anyone off. I’ve worked retail for a quarter of a century and I see it in full force!😆😆😆😆😆😆😆

I respect that. It’s like getting a PhD in English and wanting to be referred to as Doctor. No, they’re not medical doctors but it is a honorific title given to people who are at the pinnacle of their craft. They didn’t spend all that time to be called Mr or Ms- they spent all that time to be called doctor and that’s the same for Geiko.

If a doctor becomes a doctor for the title, be doesn't deserve the title nor respect. It's not title that honor men, but men that honor titles.

Okay so pissed = to being drunk? Wow comments are really teaching me a lot!
I might get nervous and call them a gecko by accident
"Correctly call them a gei-"
Japan trying not to get offended by the most random and arbitrary crap challenge (impossible)
Hey Shogo, hope your Reynauds is okay! From a fellow sufferer, stay warm! Thanks for sharing!
Australian here humbly requesting a video of how to be drunk in Japan
Happy Father's Day from Taiwan Shogo!
I think you meant to say "How to piss someone off in Kyoto"
Hillarious because pissed also means to be extremely drunk so youre basically saying alcohol is crap in Kyoto
I thought this had something to do with getting really drunk.. 😂😂😂😂
I don't know , I have mixed feelings. The more I learn about Geiko/Maiko the less it becomes glamorous, it is not only about dancing, singing, kimono and tradition, but drinking (in case of maiko underage drinking), serving rich guests, and finding herself a rich, and usually, old "husband". The former maiko girl on Twitter tells a different story from what we see on the surface
But can the Geiko help me save fifteen percent or more on my car insurance?

Wait how do I be pissed? 😂

Geiko, 15 minutes of paying respect can save you 15% on your life insurance.
the only industry run by woman with women ❤
Neat! I was wondering wht the difference was, since they exclusively use geiko in final fantasy 14.
Look, is a... (Don't say geisha, you should say geiko, otherwise they get offended) gecko.🦎
Even the way you're welcomed into a store or business is different from Tokyo.
❤❤❤
Did you know that “Pissed,” can also mean very drunk?
...and of course, being in Kyoto, they probably wouldn't directly tell you that they were upset 😅 I think I'd feel really intimidated by the social climate if I ever visited Kyoto
As someone who has been into karyukai culture for over 10 years now: the terms "maiko/geiko" are NOT EXCLUSIVE TO KYOTO. There are many smaller kagai/hanamachi across Japan where these terms are used, mostly in West Japan (such as Kanazawa, Gifu, Osaka or Nagoya) but with some exceptions (such as Yuzawa or Yamagata).
There's a movie called "Lady Maiko" that is relevant to this.. 😂 Lots of waxing lyrical about the difference between Kyoto and elsewhere. You get through half way before you realize we what is really is.. 😂
That's MISTER to the likes of YOU
Whi else said demon slayer 💀
Is "adult entertainer" a euphemism?
I heard Kyoto people are different. 😅🤭
Wait.....so what are Geisha then? Are they the same thing but just outside of Kyoto?
I'm confused. Pissed means drunk.
And how do they call coffe in kyoto
How to do what in Kyoto?
They need to get a life
So....... Is Hangyoku okay than being called a geisha????? 😕😕😕😕😕
She must have been from Gion. Women from other hanamachi wouldn't be so conceited.
It's the same as misgender someone in the USA 😂
So many smothering rules, you know . . . Best to just view them from afar, as I always say (now). -ex-japanophile . . . sadly-
Shogo, it's no problem at all but " how to be pissed" doesn't fit what you're talking about. You'd need to be telling people how to get super drunk in Kyoto for that sentence to fit.
so... America vs rest of the world basically with its 'special names and calculations of time and math"
That is a really petty reason to get upset
