Jeff. I started shooting a longbow 2 months ago. As of today I now have three. Have been watching videos for two months and yours are some of the best ones out there. I think it is your style and presentation. Very good. I think I have watched most of your videos. I keep trying to find some I haven't watched yet. Keep up the good work. There are some of us out here that are soaking up your advice like a sponge.

Dave Schulz, son of John Schulz, teaches "swing draw, spread draw, anchor, hold it, release" to new longbow shooters. The 'hold it' is about a half second. In time that becomes more fluid, but the shooter has learned what full draw, the anchor and the sight picture looks like. I have taught a number of people how to shoot with secondary aiming that found my garage easier to hit than the 4' by 6' target. In every case that absolute mechanical secondary aiming becomes informed instinctive very quickly and the shot becomes fluid. Shooting point on is split or secondary aiming, but even that will become instinctive and fluid as the automatic pilot gets informed.

Beautifully demonstrated and is exactly how Rev. Stacy Groscup taught us. Bravo Jeff! All glory to God Who created us with more talents and abilities to even know that are for us to develop and use to help us all in life. This includes to shoot the bow like you also teach, that with God we can do it if only we believe.

I'm nearly 60 and haven't shot a bow for over 45 years and I've just bought a cheapy 40Lb'er Takedown bow off ebay to get me started on my new hobby. Eventually I'll upgrade but there are so many bows to choose from haha Thanks for all of your tips. Liked and Subbed. Gday from Australia!

I. Tried every way to aim under the sun. I started instinctive. Then traditional archery did a loop and everything I was taught and how I shot was wrong. I was so confused and aggravated that I was not enjoying archery anymore. I’m a hunter so I had to do something. I have attention disorders that kept me from school. Back then there wasn’t names for these disorders. Trying a aiming system is not going to happen. So I got on you tube and learned I’m not the only one. Back to instinctive and loving archery again. Amen, tons of close up shooting at tiny targets. master that distance and then back up a couple feet and master that distance. it is all about giving that awesome computer that God gave each one of us something to work with and then not arguing with it but shoot. I used to call it shooting when it "felt good." our brain is more than able to figure out what we need to do to make the shot. any good quarterback or outfielder can tell you that. Larry Bird and Michael Jordan made their livings making shots that many could not believe. They just did what it took to get it in there without over thinking it. Chasing a tennis ball around the yard or a field with blunts is fun practice at unknown distances and sharpens the eye and your brain. love it Brother

Your spot on, as I did with Rick Welch at his shooting school, he set my bow up to shoot exactly where I was looking so yardage didn't matter. Pick a spot and let it fly and if you do your job with proper form your arrow will land where you want it to

I made that mistake of going heavy coming from a compound I started at 65 lbs and found out really quick I couldn’t shoot the broadside of a barn now I’m at 45 lbs and can hit what I’m aiming at set your pride aside and start with a light weight bow you’ll be surprised at how your form will come together this guy knows his stuff thanks for the good videos

Yes sir it’s true you have to have a controlled shot to be accurate for sure thanks so very much!

I grew up in a situation where a lot of my Family's food came from the hunt and I can say, unequivocally, that this is the best way to shoot. If you are ever going to shoot for anything other than points, it's the only way.

I just started trad shooting. Your channel has great stuff! Helps me to understand alot better.. Thanks for the videos!!

Awesome advice. I'm big on trad shooting. I infact don't even own a compound bow. Too much going on with a compound bow. I'm all about using the optics that God gave me. 😎 Having said that, I've totally honed in on your advice on arrow weight and knowing your rig (hunting vs target shooting). And I'm also going to really start focusing on close distance shooting. There's so much emphasis on trying to nail that far shot that shooting up close almost gets forgotten about. Building up that psychology on nailing a shot point blank and really focusing on that small dot in the center is key I think. Thanks for the advice and so glad I found your channel!

your spot on start with low poundage, that was my mistake going to compound to re curve I shot 60 lb cb and went to a 45 lb re curve I took the re curve to the archery shop and I said that the bow was 50-60 lb nope 45 lb , I wish I would have gotten a 35 lb bow to start with would have saved me a lot of time and head scratching and don't even try to tune arrows if you are over bowed

... So I guess there's no approximate increments to work with? Like (for example) an inch separation between arrow tip and the target at so many yards, etc? Probably not with variations between different bows, but I was hoping lol.

Yes sir the sage is a great starter bow and also the black hunter, 3rivers archery has some outstanding entry level bows as well along with anything you might need and they’re friendly to talk with and will help you get the right equipment but we’ll be glad to give you any help possible as well thanks!

Sage is fine but #45 may be too heavy to start with, maybe 30-35#.

This even works at 100 yards. Enough quality repetitive shots, and your mind learns the correct angle

When I was a kid me and my brother got long bows for christmas.... we shot them things for years and had alot of fun and I could hit a deer target at 100 all day long and not even have to think about it....my subconscious just new that right angle for that bow and this arrows....I just picked up a recurve 3 days ago after shooting a compound the last 12 years and i have to relearn everything I know as I kid

I'm shooting 60 pounds. I started at 50 lol. This man is absolutely right about starting with small weights

My first trad bow was 45lbs, my new one is 50.

Im dreaming of owning and competing with one of your bows here in norway i just have a cheap black sheep Nova recurve as its all i can afford but shooting 490 top 510 out of maximum 600 possible rounds 60 arrows on 60cm target at 20 yards

i can only a recurve bow in the mid 20’s #, i use 1400 arrows which fly well. from 20 yards out it is very difficult to have good groups, any advice

It is very difficult to get consistency from any bow under 35# at distance because of string tension and trajectory, I’ve got some setups in the upper 30’s shooting very well but they do require near perfect form and release at least for me.

How in the world did the native Americans set up their archery equipment and get the performance the where able to get?

Well I think it’s a lot like my Osage self bow, when people learned the craft and really mastered bow making they figured out what worked and built some pretty amazing bows capable of anything, the first time I shot mine I couldn’t believe how good it actually shot and my only question to that is how did they build a really good string lol
