I agree completely about the importance of knowing the ending first. I've been a ghostwriter since 2009, and I always write the Climax/Resolution first. Then I plot backwards plot point by plot point to the beginning. I think, what are the logical things that had to have happened to get from the dark moment to the climax? etc...

Wow, I've never considered writing backwards before. I usually write my books chronologically and discover truths at the same time the MC does. I feel like if I knew the ending before I started, the MC mindet would be distorted or something. But maybe in the future an idea will come to me that would better be written in reverse and I can try this out :D

I'm writing my FIRST book, but there are going to be sequels, any tips on how to end it in a cliffhanger? Or is a cliffhanger a bad idea?

I think every book in a series (besides the last one) needs to end with a cliffhanger of some kind. Something needs to be left unfulfilled so readers come back for more. However, it can't be the main plot point that the book tackled. So for example, with The Hunger Games. The major goal of the series was defeating President Snow/the Capitol. That was left unresolved by Book 1. However, the specific goal of that book-surviving the Hunger Games arena-was achieved. This is a good balance.
