    it is tricky. but on the other side broadheads are mostly used for hunting and there you have just one shot to get it right :) for battle/combat I would go with bodkin tips (armour piercing)

    Very interesting technique. I really like that you pull out the arrows sideways. Makes a lot of sense! :) I am searching for those special nocks you have in this video. Where can somebody buy these nocks?

    I can imagine a third variant holding arrows with broad heads (maybe you want to try?): hold the arrows with point upwards in your bow hand. This way you shouldn’t hurt yourself when grabbing the arrow. Thank you for sharing your experiment with us! 🏹🔆

    The cheap shot broadheads are the less expensive of the market, they are not even charp, I think they have been design for training and small game hunting, no risk of cuts for you I think Charlie ^^. I personally use inox steel two blades broadheads, 5€ each. I haven't been practicing yet with these, my speed technique and accuracy are still like crap and these blades are very sharp so I want to wait until my technique is smooth to try them. But I agree with you, holding arrows in bow hand with broadheads does work for me if I hold two arrows and a third is already nocked. If you try to hold arrows in the string hand there are only two techniques that are suitable for combat I think, the one you showed in the video and the turkish/japanese technique holding the arrows close to the arrowhead. These two techniques I think are more comfy with a good thumb release, the turkish technique was used while running, from a horse and while holding a shield. It is also much better if you need to shoot from a cover because the arrows are close to your arm. But as you know this technique requires three moves to nock the arrow. Maybe a DIY arm quiver would increase even more the number of arrows you can hold at once. 1 arrow nocked, 2-3 arrows in string hand, 2 more in bow hand and 3-5 arrows on arm quiver. At least 8-11 arrows you could shoot in a raw with this technique. About accuracy and power, of course in the ancient times you needed at least 100J to pierce leather, chain mail or cheap plates. So the bows were 90-160 lbs at 28" with 800-1200 grain arrows flying at 50 m/s. Using a bow today compared to a fire arm would be almost suicide but it's still a dangerous weapon, a hunting bow of 50-70 lbs at 28" shooting 350-650 grain arrows deliver at least 70J of energy. This is enough to go through a Wild Boar, sand bags and kevlar if the distance is inferior to 30m. But against wood, steel and ceramic the arrow would be stopped.

    Hi, I shoot only with broadheads using thumbdraw - avarage speed is two arrows in 1.5seconds (relsesse to release) I hold my arrows head up in my bowhand before I take them, I find it safer whan jumping and running. If you want I can share what I am doong with you.

    Second thing I want to learn after military type long range target shooting is thumb draw and the third thing is shoot quickly by the Mameluk technique. Why that one? They was the ''I killing people for a living'' true soldiers so their method is battle proven. Big plus for me the fact that is they collected the knowledge from the steppe nomad culture. Hard to find closer resources to my Hun forefathers.

    That was a very interesting experiment and it showed one of the reasons, why historical archers did NOT shoot arrows from the bowhand, but always from the draw hand. So far I found only one source for arrows shot from bowhand and this was Gao Ying. He said: only three arrows, the first one nocked and only for military presentations, not in battle. It is absolutely okay for me to shoot arrows from the bowhand in a modern sport, like You do in Running Archery, or in midern Horseback Archery competitions, as long, as we know it is a modern style from the 21st century. - It is not okay, to sell shooting from the bowhand as a traditional martial art of th Huns, like a very special man in Hungary does....

    Hello! Although I don't prefer Kassai's technique, I don't recall him stating that the way he does it WAS the way they did it historically. In fact one of his very known sayings translates something like "Don't follow your ancestors, follow what your ancestors followed". This shows very well that he is aware that he is not copying the historical way, but he found something that works for him for what he aims to do. Concerning the historical aspect: I'm pretty sure keeping arrows in the bowhand was not a common thing. I haven't researched it extensively, but through experimentation I found that you can't really shoot heavy bows like that. If you look into what draw weights they use in Kassai's schools, you will find some astonishingly low numbers (25-35#). Even though nobody today shoots from horseback with battle-powered bows, other schools usually shoot a bit heavier, in the 35-45# range.

    Yes we live in the 21st century, and no one carries a bow on the street either 😁 And if you were Arrow or Hawkeye chasing criminals, they would wear modern body armor. And no bow in the world can penetrate that. Still, it's fun to experiment, and adapt.

  • @Scario45

    @Scario45

    You're right about the tactical efficiency of the bow but about body armor depends of what they are made of. If it's ceramics you're right but if it's kevlar it goes through.

    @@Scario45 But isn't kevlar just an overly? Ceramics, then kevlar over it?

  • @Scario45

    @@gizmonomono depends on the models. Police officers are usually only wearing kevlar, which is why it is so flexible. A plate of ceramic and an antitrauma plate under it is way stiffer, most of the time only soldiers or SWAT teams have this kind of equipment. Even then It only protect the torso, maybe the shoulders if you wear the big thing. So yes, technically a bow can be used (and has been historically) against modern fighter in the last century. But still a bow and a firearm are expensive, the fire arm is always more compact, has a better reach and require lot less training than a bow to be used efficiently. The only pros of a bow being that it goes through kevlar (so lvl 1 protection vests), sand bags and it is silent. On the other hand any fire arm above 44 magnum go through kevlar too, has a better precision, firing rate and are easier to use. Also you can sufficiently neutralize the sound of a fire arm with subsonic ammos and suppressor.
