That grid pattern idea is great for just getting on with it, which can be half the battle. Keeping the novelty and the challenge is worth thinking about, going to unearth my sketchbook and have a think

Gardening, exercising and when I'm trying to get to sleep are when my ideas tend to come. Oh, and when I'm in the shower. Basically just any time that it's inconvenient to write things down.

Reminds me of my big brother who would take my action figures and go " Hey this would make a good such and such" I would of course go along with it just out of curiosity but still be a bit miffed all the same at times. But was most of the time worth the sacrifice/journey.
I am envious of your Pound stores. The Dollar store where I live, where everything does cost only a dollar (at least they're being honest), sells items that aren't even worth a dollar. Fortunately there are other outlets for accumulating worthless junk that can be made into other less worthless junk. Why just this morning my trusty 20 year old toaster decided it would no longer hold down a slice of bread to make toast and do I despair about having to buy a new toaster (after all who fixes stuff anymore) - no. The first thing that comes to mind is - Parts! Not to mention taking stuff apart which is always a bonus. Your videos have done this to me.

Yeah, I was wondering if there were any side effects to torching plastics in an enclosed attic crawlspace with no head room...🤔 Well, it seems to help you to be creative Bill, or at least very entertaining while you record your hallucinations of talking cotton swabs. Wow, the things you do for your audience, most impressive Bill!!
You could have a second channel called bill baking stuff, where you bake stuff. You can use chocolate chips as edible beads/rivets and some strawberry laces which of course come from edible spray bottles. Lots of potential to make something cool, let me know what you think?

And Bill Shaking Stuff - where he gets bottles of liquids and shakes them. And Bill Taking Stuff - where he steals things from Poundland. And Bill Breaking Stuff, where he.... Oh, hang on...
Is there gonna be some kind of poundland saga?
The gridded page thing is a great tool for encouraging creativity and diversity: I used to teach graphic design, and when we were doing logo or poster design, I'd get the students to divide their page into four and to quickly sketch out four different ideas (as different as they could make them) before they decided on their final, worked-through design. Almost invariably, their first mini-design was NOT their final design, because the first mini was usually the "obvious" - and often less interesting - variant. Plus, of course, it hones your sketching/doodling skills and the small size stops you spending two hours going overboard on teeny weeny detailing. Nice one!

"We are all going to cease to exist at some point," hold your terrible plans for yourself, I'mma go be infinite. But thanks for the offer.
That's a good one, Bill. So many ways to kick start creativity here. And the idea of putting limits on it is great -- like all of the prompts for creative writing I used to fill out for homework. I never really understood them as a student, but I get it now. If it's just the whole world full of ideas, it's too overwhelming. The brain shuts down. If I'm forced to work with a very limited range of options, it's like the brain says, "Ok, that's more reasonable. I can do something with this. Lots of things, actually." Well done showing us how this works with crafting as well.

I’ve been going through some really difficult times lately, and have been frankly depressed beyond what I’ve been in a long while. Watching this has just kind of helped, if that makes sense. I’ve definitely been in a creative rut, but seeing your perspective on just doing the things is nice. So…yeah, thanks. Keep doing what you do, so long as you enjoy it that’s what we’re here for.

Definitely going to try the grid exercise in my sketchbook. I have often used the random shape exercise, where you fill up a page or pages with random shapes and then go back and turn them into something, but I definitely like the grid idea, leaves the process more in the hands of the imagination, forcing.more raw creative thought. Really enjoyed this one! Thanks for sharing!

I don't do a lot of illustration, but I do keep a memo book that I write down my D&D ideas into. I'll often have a theme, and I just fill out a page, front and back, with all the ideas I can think of around it.
"Good design comes from constraints." Can't remember where I first heard this, but it seems to be true. I really appreciate the time you take showing us your process.
I have visual communications degree, imo to many limit there creativity, writers stare at blank pages when they should be on a spinning wheel making potery, creativity inertly pushes to other things at the worst times, put thoughts to work, get them out so others may come

This was an awesome episode mate. I'm not a sketcher at all, but that's because I don't sketch ... no what I mean? I have an empty journal here, I should use it! That turret was incredible, if I could give this two "thumbs up". Imma go draw a grid in my journal!

thanks mate, would love to see it if you do!
I agree, taking stuff apart or messing around with materials is really useful for generating ideas. I like doing thumbnail sketches; if I'm really struggling, I like to choose something that acts as a creative 'challenge', like a brief word or a rule I have to abide by in making the piece (like only using certain colours or having to include a specific item in the build). Although it sounds contradictory, I find that limitations lead to more creative ideas, as it gives me some structure to work around, if that makes sense. With the brief words, I like to choose vague words that have plenty of room to branch off from them (so rather than saying a "landscape", prompts like "chaos" or "confined" have much more lenience to them? I don't really know how to explain it haha). Also, I love the transitions in your videos, they kind of remind me of the ones in Bottletop Bill (I used to love that show lol)
"Bill pay attention to the road" :)))))) EPIC!!!!!

I also like to make things with recycled things, like plastic toy parts, broken printer parts, plastic shampoo bottles, bijou, plastic tubes, wooden sticks, plastic sticks etc. I have five or six boxes of stuff... I like going to the 1.99 (the name of money is "Real" here) store and "looking for things that look like things I want to create" is very stimulating. Virtual hugs from Brazil...
look at that. using the anvil horn with plastic properly. you use it for shaping rounded parts. in this case, with plastic instead of metal.

Great idea about the sketchbook Bill! Lately, I've been trying to scribble down my ideas on any paper that is handy as they happen, but its very hard to keep track of dozens of random bits of paper and backs of envelopes. Will have to pick up a note/sketchbook at the $$ store the next time I go on a restocking trip. Thanks for all the tips; about creativity as well as all the mini-projects you mentioned here. Bill thank you so much. That grid in sketchbook technique has led to me now having maybe 6 new gaslands car ideas when I felt like i'd already done everything. (or half a dozen new ideas... why do people say half a dozen when 6 is so much easier?.. i dont know...idiots.)
been watching bill for a month and a half and he gave me the inspiration to make my own robot that got fron a old toy airplane as the head and all and it looks good
I have to ask how you dismantle spray bottles so neatly? I took one apart today and ended up having to hit it with a hammer and cut away all the outside plastic to extract the mechanical bits inside. It ended up being much more like how you took those water pistols apart. It felt like such waste! If you’re ever stuck for video ideas, a tutorial on dismantling a spray bottle would be mich appreciated
@BillMakingStuff

it always depends on the bottle, some I found like that and some come apart easier.
I like to fumble through a box of parts to get ideas of what can be made. Or take a part from a box and draw its shape into something. Thank for these other inspiring methods.
Yeah, the grid thing is PURE GENIUS! That's what I was looking for to help me not feel overwhelmed with the learning curve of this new awesome activity! Thanks for that! HEY, I do accounting too.

Thanks Bill making stuff for making stuff 😺.
Lovely stuff as usual, although some of the pages of your sketchbook resemble the pictures that disturbed and possessed children draw with charcoal or black crayons whilst they're in sinister mental institutions, and then hide in a drawer, only to be found by the film's protagonist years later, and which give a clue to the nature of the demonic force that's trying to burst through into our reality. Just a thought.
