The whole "i want to do your job" thing to me always feels like it comes from people who know maybe 10-20% of what the job they talk about consists of, and have too little imagination or knowledge to figure out the rest for themselves. (And that they would not want to do those 80-90% of the rest of it) As much as i am interested in cars and like driving, i would not want to have either of your jobs. The only thing you get to do i an a little envious is driving certain cars. And the thing you mention about being a public figure: It probably depends on the place, but there are places on this planet where most people would find it unpolite to start talking to a person that is a public figure but is doing something private. (Take germany for example, when Angela Merkel went shopping and had to queue at the cashiers, people didn't just start talking shit to her.) As someone working in engineering i think the way of thinking you guys often show, is why i like this "podcast". The husband of my aunt (working in sales) once told me a joke and because it fits so good to explain the engineering way of thinking it's one of the 2 or 3 jokes i can store in my brain: (My translation won't make it as funny i'm sure) An engineer, a priest and a cardiologist play a round of golf. Right when they are in the middle of their round, the club manager shows up and says "I'm sorry, but wold you mind to resume your game another time? The firebrigade veterans are here, who have lost their eyesight fighting the fire of the clubhouse last year. As some form of appreciation we invite them to play free of charge." The priest answeres "Of course, and i will pray for them and their eyesight." the cardiologist says "No Problem, i will try to arrange some appointments with a friend of mine who's an eye specialist, maybe he can be of some help to them." And the engineer says " ok, but why didn't you invite them to play in the dark?"

You guys really make my Monday morning. I walked over a mile to 3 different stores to find coffee and the right creamer this morning, 'cause there was no way I was listening to this without coffee, and I forgot to restock over the weekend. Two things. 1. The PT cruiser, no one ever talks about the fact that it was technically classified as a light truck. I believe this had implications regarding safety requirements, bumper height, fuel economy, etc. Would love if you could tell me the real truth about this. I had two co-workers involved in a head on collision in a rental PT cruiser years ago, both survived, but got pretty banged up. 2. Hyphen. Love everything you do, but I personally believe you are better talking to the camera, then doing Voice over. The spyker video was a standout for me, you appeared more comfortable and the whole video seemed more conversational. Keep up the great work both of you. P.S. The only down side to this Monday morning, was a Sporty Shorty parked in my neighborhood with an ancient alarm that has been going off non-stop for the last 2 hours. Somehow it seems fitting.

Thank you for spotlighting what is considered journalism and what is masquerading. Most of the video reviews are more a regurgitation of press packets that were provided by the manufacturer. Which then rolls into the driving impressions portion, where the steering is 'good', the handling is 'good', the transmission shifting is 'good'. Or if it's a sporty car, everything is 'great'.

The way I learned manual was very interesting. I only learned 5 months ago on a Subaru Crosstrek. I tried to reverse it out of the driveway. Even though I knew how a manual transmission and clutch worked, I always let out too fast after feeling the bite point. So, it didn't work the first time. Then, a couple days later, I got a feel of the clutch in a parking lot. Then comes the interesting part. My dad and I drove around town. I would tell him when to press the clutch, but I would control the shift lever. On the way back, I controlled the clutch, brakes, steering, and I told him when to shift. I learned within 24hrs after that.

There is one additional factor that I think needs to be discussed. It's not an absolute requirement to being a car journalist, but it often is corelated. Matt Farah candidly discussed this once during his podcast. It is a lot easier to get into automotive journalism when you have high financial security and an upper middle class background. I mean you guys both seem like you came from upper middle class backgrounds, Matt discusses this and recognizes it. I'm pretty positive that I will work in the industry at some point in my life in some way or another but I honestly can't make the commitment to right now because I would probably make less than half of what I currently make and the world is so expensive I still have financial anxiety as a statistician making 6 figures. When I was at my old job, which I hated and wasn't paid well, I seriously considered working as an intern for motor week. Like you said Jason, I constantly find technical errors, not just specs (like for instance the accord hybrid is 48mpg ;) ), but a lack of understanding of mechanical principles in some auto coverage that I could explain more clearly and accurately. I'm sure I could do it and be successful, I just can't afford to take that risk right now. Transitioning out of any career is a big risk. Into automotive journalism, especially in present day, is riskier. I mean really, for anyone who's actually a kid right now and hasn't gone to college, you know what you should specialize in and become an expert in if you want to be an auto journalist a decade from now? Probably electrical engineering, robotics, and computer science..

I learned how to drive a stick in the most rusted as Shitbox GMC sonoma. My mom bought it new in 1993 and it had 300,000 miles on it crossed the country probably 15 times. one of them towing my moms 69 nova over the rocky mountains. It was a 2.8 v6 5 speed 2wd with the jump seats in the back. it was a cali spec so it had no rust proofing and spending half of it's life in iowa winters resulted in being able to see the road through the floor and holes almost every panel. My brother got it in 2004 and beat the shit out of it I learned how to drive it when I was 13 on gravel roads near my home town after it sat in our backyard for 3 years.

Jason is one of the few reviewers I really trust (even if the last two episodes in particular have taught me to take *any* auto journalist's videos with a grain of salt as to whether they actually like the cars). It's hard to compete with that kind of knowledge, experience and perspective but then again the zeitgeist is that facts don't matter, only feelings and tribal alliances -- so I'm fairly surprised there isn't more of that kind of car content as well. Tesla, BMW, Ferrari, maybe Porsche ... all have legions of fanboys who will engage the **** out of videos that appear to say anything negative about their brand. I still chuckle about what happened to Matt Farah when he made a video suggesting a Fiesta ST was as engaging to drive as an E46 M3. He's still apologizing for that.

Things I observe about people who are really not in tune with cars. Clutch and throttle modulation or the lack. Slamming a car door instead of closing a door using feedback, leaning on a cars paint, and how people use a gearshift. I have learned to just keep my mouth shut unless they are driving my car with a potential for harm. In their mind they are a wonderful driver.

I'm not convinced he'd get it right. In his Camisa verdict of the Honda Insight he referred to the transmission as a cvt. That car only has one gear. For the majority of driving the engine powers a generator which then sends power to the EV motor. The single gear is essentially a 6th gear. This failure in understanding would also explain why he complained about the engine revving hard on the highway

Savage geese goes beyond skin deep when it comes to the engineering and design of cars. I always thought that it was cool that they'd put the car on a lift and show you stuff that would otherwise be bullet points on a fact sheet. They're genuine car geeks, I could see where the style or tone of the videos can turn people off, even the personalities behind them, but I'd usually go to Savage geese for genuine car buying advise than say, Doug Demuro. Then again those two are different type of channels while different intentions. Different strokes for different folks as they say.

Will be interested to see what Jason and Derek think about the Integra. At first look from a difference, I'm disappointed. I get that sporty cars are out of favor now, but using that name plate on what is basically a luxury version of the Civic seems hollow. I owned a 1994 Integra and had shopped the Civic before buying. That Integra was really a very different car with a very different engine, more connected handling and a more sporting character. Don't see level of distinction in the current offerings. To be fair by the generation after my Integra, the Civic Si and the RSX weren't that distinct from each other, although the Si was more different from a standard Civic than the current one. Honda seems to mainly lost the sporting character in their line. The CT-R may be great (haven't driven it), but it's really on its own island. Honda used to produce cars through their line that were interesting to drive - an early 90s Accord 5-speed was fun and the CR-X was a blast. And Honda's sports cars with drive to the back wheels have been one-offs that Honda couldn't afford to update. And the recent NSX - what WAS the story there? Why the hell are they even making racing engines - it's not like they are connecting those ideas with the cars they make.

I could see having 4 Fiat 124 Spyders at the same time. Gives you a ready source of spare parts and with 4 cars, the desired part should be working in at least one of them.

A Fiat 124 Spyder story. I was driving my '75 Spyder to work (circa 1985 I think) when the right rear collapsed and the car starting crabbing. Looked under the car and saw that the tubular swingarm had kinked. Gently drove it home. That evening, went into the local Saab dealer who handled Fiat parts (Fiat had long since left the country) with the kinked control arm. I assumed that the part would be unavailable for months and the car would be gathering dust in the driveway. To my astonishment, when I presented the damaged control arm, the parts guy, without even moving his feet, simply bent down below the parts counter and came up with the replacement. It was a surreal but lovely moment!

If Jason did 3 years of MechE, and graduated as a triple major (none of which being MechE), I would be interested to know how long he was in school, as an upcoming fifth year

Interesting bottom line here, that you have love writing and telling a story. Similar to what The Intercooler guys said on their How to become an auto journalist episode. Both podcast are properly nerdy.

I appreciate that you guys kept it humble and factual but I think you skipped over your upbringing quite a bit. Specifically for Derek freak of nature Tam-Scott. Like oh yeah Derek got an engineering degree. NO, he got an engineering degree from STANFORD. The harder to get in than win the lottery Stanford. And his parents were both Doctors or Jazz musicians or something? Or that they owned the Miura?? How did you guys not bring up the- GUYS!!! TALK ABOUT THE MIURA!!!!! I've heard a combined 30 minutes of talk about some pos mystery 3 series but not Derek's Miura???? A million dollar car with one of the craziest stories ever. That Derek has personally brought back from the dead through years and years of restoration. I've heard probably 5-10 minutes of combined Miura talk. Oh god. Oh god. I can't do this. Someone get Derek to plop his meat on the table. The mystery is too much. I need more full on unreserved Derek. He keeps holding back. You know what, I thought that Matt Farah idea was dumb but I take it back. Get Derek and Matt into a dick swinging match. I could see Matt pushing Derek out of his comfort zone in the best way possible

"How to " would work better with "BECOME" rather than "BE". Therefore, HOW TO BECOME AN AUTOMOTIVE JOURNALIST would be much better. I actually have a video on the "description" (aka linking) verbs on my KZread Channel. ... otherwise, I am addicted to you, guys.

Stupidcar Blondie is comical in her “reviews” of cars. I was watching multiple 992 Turbo S videos a few weeks ago because I was trying to decide if it was worth grossly overpaying for and stumbled across her video in which she criticized the car profusely and said the “problem with 911’s” has always been that they just aren’t flashy enough and the don’t generate enough attention and for the amount of money they cost nobody pays enough attention to them…..I’m obviously paraphrasing the stupidity but judging by the roasting she took in the comments section atleast I wasn’t the only one who felt that way
