My mother is naturally submissive, and I was also raised in the church where that wasn't viewed as a bad thing, so I didn't really have any strong female role models growing up. My mother and step father both like to pretend that she is the authority figure in the house because she does make decisions, however the minute his opinion is different than hers they go with his choice. It took a long time and a lot of trial and error before my own marriage became a meeting of equals rather than two kids playing house like the grownups. Well, there's also the fact that we started dating young and got married young too- there was a lot of growing up to do anyway- but the lack of a role model didn't help.

Treating your husband like a king in this woman’s fashion is the quickest way to find yourself abused, cheated on and finally abandoned.

100% Women need to ve taught to be strong, not just men. It helps no one when one does everything..... I dont get anyone who wants a slave: itsn't it much more fun (healthier too), to have a woamn who brings money into the relationship? Woman who lifts her weigth and more. When my husband and I first started dating, we went to one of his male coworker’s weddings. I grew up in a moderately fundamentalist Christian family (southern Baptist with an emphasis on end-times shit) while my husband grew up non-religious. During said wedding, the minister kept going on about wives submitting to their husbands, and my husband was utterly horrified while I was just sitting there going “not this shit again.” That’s the moment I was certain he was a keeper.

I'm just trying to imagine the looks on your faces as the minister gave his speech/sermon. How is it that you ended up with a Southern Baptist minister for your wedding in the first place? Was it to appease the parents?

My wife is disabled, and I work from home. On the bad days, I'm doing 90% of the labor. On her good days, SHE'S doing 90% of the work. It's just what works for you and your needs, I fully agree. For us, 50/50 wouldn't be functional at all, and if The Woman was forced to be responsible for everything, we'd never have home cooked food or clean floors. It's called a partnership for a reason.

My partner and I have a similar arrangement bc it suits our respective disabilities. This weekend, partner got a covid booster Friday evening and they react really strongly to shots. Saturday, I brought them food and pain killers on a timely schedule while they rested. Then Sunday morning I got a migraine and our rolls reversed.

Wording is a bit meh. Just believe it shouldn't really matter. As long as you arent like idk, taking advantage of your partner or thinking you are above them etc. To me submissive/dominant roles are practically equal. I would however agree with you if were talking in extreme cases. But it honestly works both ways.

My mother instilled in me the beliefs and values of the 1940's-1950's, Christian dogma. I thought I had rejected it after I left home, tried to maintain my autonomy in my first relationship, but found myself reverting back into that headspace. Didn't help that my partner had a superiority complex, wanted me to be submissive. I thought we were on the same page when we first got involved. But he did a 180° after 6 months, and was very manipulative. He eventually said that someone had to be the captain of the ship, which was him, and I was his first mate. I should have jumped ship then. Took me 18 years to sort myself out , miserable most of the time. By then I was so dependent and depressed, it was really hard to leave. Been single ever since. (28 years).

I’ve been with my wife for more than 32 years and we’ve never remotely had a traditional gender-role relationship. She’s not remotely submissive (we wouldn’t have lasted 2 weeks if she was). Men who need that need to take a loooong look at their own insecurities.

True enough...there was a relatively short time from the second industrial revolution into the 1980s - and specifically in the "first world" - when single-income families could be the norm, and we developed a "cult of domesticity" in which the will of God was women who stayed home. Before (and after) that, women worked in the fields, in the factories, in the cottage industries, full time, AND took care of the home...and we now live in a time in which both partners work, and yet the women do about 90% of the housework. It's crazy.

As someone who has been in an abusive relationship (as in, being the victim) I can say that I fully understand how bad it can be to have to come home to abuse and a hard home-life after a hard day at work. Coming home to a loving environment is much preferable. That said, I don't think a wife needs to be submissive. I think both sides of the matrimony can choose to make their spouses life easy or difficult. I don't think that is overly difficult. What's more, the abusive relationship I was in was a Christian marriage. I've since thrown off both shackles... and have never been happier. Atheist and single FTW.

I love my husband but will not submit to him because I am a strong-willed and independent woman who can think for herself! We are equal partners with our own strengths and complement each other well. We love each other very much and have been together for 22 years. I was raised by an angry and sometimes violent father who expected submission from my brother and there was NO way I was going to live in fear like that again. NO one gets to control me but me!

If I was married, or had a girlfriend, I would want her to have the bravery and enough respect for me to call me out when she thinks I'm being a dumb ass. I thought that's what being in a healthy and loving relationship was all about.

When you're talking about division of labor and household stuff, it reminded me of an episode of DS9 where some new religious leader came into power and forced everyone into their traditional caste roles. A woman who spent her entire life leading an insurgency and leading/fighting for her people ended up having to make terrible art because some arbitrary rule said so...and everyone was miserable. It's probably a silly reference, but it's what I think of every time one of these people gets on about their "gender roles" crap. I'm sure some people are down to be told what to do, but that doesn't work for everyone...and the idea that you must comply or else you're "a bad woman/Christian" is ridiculous.

Me and my wife used to do that all the time over where to go for dinner. I wrote a little program that would semi-randomly select a place from the list to solve this. When I was a young'n, back in the 70s, my best friend's mother had not allowed anyone, not even her husband, see her without a blonde wig on for at least the 10-11 years he'd been alive. His dad had said he preferred blonde hair (this is what the kid reported), and she'd listened and lovingly obeyed supposedly. Bless my little 11 year old heart for my horrified reaction and immediate concern for her safety and well-being. I agonized, as it seemed I should do something, but I had no power to do anything, it seemed, so I felt sad for her and guilty for not acting in some way. Every time I hear some conservative go on about how their "innocent" children should be protected from having to think about difficult things, I feel bad for their kids, who likely are thinking about difficult things all the time and being ignored or shamed by their parents when they try to ask about it. By the by, I winced when you seemed to be misunderstanding the incredible, bodybreaking, life shortening, and demeaning work they had to do. And women often did commonly have jobs and owned businesses all through history and most all locations that I've read about over the years. It's easy to not know about all that, as it's not commonly taught in a focused way, it seems to me. It reminds me of how there are several cities in the very ancient world which where saved from being conquered and put to the sword, after the army was defeated or surrendered, by the women of the city, who didn't fancy the rape part of raping and pillaging. In one wonderful case, they went to the roofs and, as the conquering army marched in, they tore the roof tiles of their homes and other buildings and rained roofing hell on the soldiers, causing them to retreat from the city in fear for the safety of their skulls, many of which were being crushed all around them. It's a sad myth that is so commonly taught and assumed, that women worked any less in the past than men did (not generally, at least). They did different sorts of things, for whatever reasons, but they worked so very hard and I try to honor that by speaking about it when it comes up.

Back in grad school, one of my professors had us look over research on super gendered relationships. The data indicated that for some people in a super gendered relationship, they derive a great deal of satisfaction from gender role performance, but only if they voluntarily adopted it out of a desire to be in that role. I always keep that in mind when I deal with couples who have this kind of arrangement. I try to suss out if they went into this because they wanted to or because they believed that they had to or were being forced into it. I've seen a lot of unhappiness in women who adopt this role because they believe they will burn in hell if they step out of it. Remember, Hegel once referred to Christianity as "unhappy consciousness" I've also seen a lot of men who go into this arrangement thinking at first that it will be okay but after several years of it they feel like they are nothing but a paycheck and some alienation and resentment can build up.

Early on in our relationship, my wife came across a novelized cookbook called A Thousand Ways to Please a Husband, and it was all about being a good housewife, and clever ways to save time in housekeeping. Happy Birthday, Matt! It's so frustrating to me, I've been married to a wonderful woman since 2000. Yes, she stays home with our three children, but that's the choice she made. She's not submissive, she's not oppressed, but she's a great mother, teacher, and wife. In the US especially most middle class families work two jobs each. Both the husband and wife (or both partners) work at LEAST two jobs. A full time job and a part time job afterward or on the weekends. You can't live on one income. You need four incomes and even then you're just scraping by. No retirement. You have to be pretty out of touch to even believe being a traditional wife is remotely possible for most families, and then even more out of touch to argue that it's the only way women should live

This reminds me of this thing I remember watching about the "surrendered wives" movement some years ago. The show took some couples who were struggling in their relationships and had them try out the submissive wife lifestyle where they give up all the decision making to their husband, including what she would wear each day and what she would eat. There was this one husband who was such an asshole. First thing he said on the show was "I work in management, and at work I'm the boss and what I say goes. So it's very frustrating for me to come home and for my wife not to respect me in the same way." Later in the show it turns out that previously he wanted to get their sons (aged four and five) their own quadbikes but the wife said no because they are way too young. So as soon as she agreed to do this surrendered wife thing he went and bought them and had the kids zooming about without helmets or anything. When she told him how pissed she was, he got all aggressive with her saying "you said you would give this a proper go to try to save our marriage! But no you had to go back on your word and try and sabotage us" So wanted to give that guy a smack. I really hope she ended up leaving him.

This sounds like a road map for the "submissive wife" to be sneaky and manipulative, the very stereotypes we've been trying to live down for centuries. These are the things I grew up with way back in the '60's and '70's. I bet Charisma's not in a relationship or ignores everything she's been indoctrinated with. On financial things: my mother handled all the finances because she knew finances and had been doing it all her life. My father, on the other hand, is a professor and was slowly learning it from my mother over the course of several years. On several occasions early on in their marriage, my father had to come into financial meetings that my mother was having with say an accountant or other financial decisions common to a household in America and sign for no other reason than "they needed a man's signature." He literally would walk into the meeting, give a thumbs up, sign and walk out.

Why? Why Godless alone trash people want see the existence of God when it is clear that if they and all the things they see around (earth, stars, planets and so on) if they are creation something must created them. For real no respect for those godless blind trash people. God is what they do not know have and do not know in their miserable alone trash life. Emma, your voice sounds exactly the same to us in America. It's perfect, and British, and charming, and all in your nose - just like always. Anywho... What cracks me up about your approach to subjects as heavy as this is that you can laugh at yourself when you are intentionally riddiculous (sometines when others are riddiculous), but never lose your sense of humor. I would say all of us who watch you routinely never have a doubt when you're making a comment for humor. I don't know what kind of person it is who doesn't understand comedy. Honestly, looking in from outside the BDSM community and having been raised in a similar religious context, the couples that were happiest gave off a vibe that's really similar to what y'all subscribe. If the religious folks were on about consent, partner care, and the various types of subs and doms, they'd probably all be in a much healthier and happier place.

While I was not raised in a strict religious household my grandparents did share a lot of the religious observance that is viewed by people such as who posted the video Emma is reacting to. And while that is merely a second-hand knowledge it was enough for me to start to explore that side of myself and I definitely agree with you about how if preaching of consent and other things that are crucial to a BDSM lifestyle were preached the two would almost be inseparable
