Of the chief virtues in Stoicism, I always thought wisdom was the most important as the other 3 would be difficult or even impossible to practise without it.

The word wisdom is not always a positive term in Confucian thinking. It is more aligned with one’s ability to defend oneself; as opposed to compassion which is one’s ability to defend my loved ones from “me” and my own inadequacies. When you establish that one is wise, you’d have to next establish if they are compassionate as well.

No. That's wrong. No one is perfect but some people will be much better than others. Only a few men are true gentlemen, not every man is.

Question about #2, “proper conduct in society”- What about if one is in a society where a despotic foreign entity has taken over the government, and the society is mentally ill, following propaganda and living in fear? What is “proper” in this situation?

If you cannot found a good man, become one.

Though there are many good concepts to take from Confucian philosophy, ultimately because of the hierarchy system it promulgates, it leads in practice to distrust or lack of care outside of that unit. Family more important than the city and the country more important than the world. 仁 ren is superseded in the case of the "child in the well" because it is not your child it is that child's family is responsible for it. Cheating a stranger is acceptable because they are not from your city. Mozi, with his concept of universal love, jian ai 兼爱, says we owe everyone 仁 no matter what group we belong to.

He says you should especially care for those in your family, but it doesn't mean he is saying you shouldn't do the same for others. Confucius says in the Analects, "Do not do to others what you do not want done to yourself". This means that since you do not want others to simply ignore your child falling into the well (in your example), you also should not ignore another child not of your family falling in. This is also why your example about cheating others is incorrect.

"Of course these lessons apply to all people equally, not just men." You say, but is that what Confucius thought? Under Confuciun Choseon women were not allowed to read and slavery was enforced even when economically unviable bc rigid societal stratification was necessary in an ideal Confuciun society.

@@jwhippet8313 . That is false. He believed in roles of wife and husband, but he taught that both were equals that each had strengths and weaknesses and that's why they needed each other. Most cultures, especially of the times, saw women as inferior to men and that's not what Confucius believed. He also absolutely didn't believe in slavery because he believed that justice and kindness should be given to all. He sought for a harmonious relationship between government and subjects. That all were as a loving family. So he very much was against slavery

@@Deadsea_1993 , where are you getting this from? Confucius regarded women as equal to slaves and promoted slavery, even complaining that the Zhou dynasty slave rites should be re-established. Those rites involved killing or burying slaves alive when their more important masters died. KZread doesn't let me lost links, but Google Confucius and Slavery and you'll be given dozens of Chinese scholars' articles on Confucius as the champion of slave owners. Confucius' main belief was that you should be the absolute best example of whatever you were in the hierarchy and not try to adjust your place, and to keep doing that even if others failed in their duties. So the slave should work hard and honor his master even if the master abused him. That's virtuous. Trying to escape is not virtuous.

Haha I disappoint my mom my entire life but the last two years been busting ass too graduate college just so I can make her smile once. Only at 22 im 24 now did I realize just how much I am too handle and she managed too do that for 22 years. I am from Taiwan, so I can deeply comprehend what you are teaching about the Ideas of Confucius. I keep reading and learning from the Four Books collected by his students while Confucius was alive. It is really true saying from Confucius. Not like the other religions which focus only on Buddha or God separated from the real life. Confucius says "If you can't do what humans must do to duty, you have no duty for the heaven." No qualification for heaven.

Indeed. Confucius explicitly supported that men should be the leaders of a society. Women needed to be structured into their important roles or social and cultural collapse will occur. This is clearly seen in Western countries today.

I would say it's not just trickle-up or trickle-down but a dialectical (two-way) relationship. The rulers being virtuous is just as important as the masses, if either side goes astray it can lead to instability and chaos. Confucius said, "If the people be led by laws, and uniformity sought to be given them by punishments, they will try to avoid the punishment, but have no sense of shame. If they be led by virtue, and uniformity sought to be given them by the rules of propriety, they will have the sense of the shame, and moreover will become good." It is important to lead by example from the top just as much as it is to cultivate virtue in the home from the bottom.

No! Shem cannot be to treat others like we with to be treated ourselves. This is a selfish way very narcissistic to assume everyone should define good and bad like ourselves. No! We all have different needs, ideas, opinions and perception of Reality is relative to each and only one of us. Don't fool yourself pretending that you know what makes others happy without checking with them first.

No actually being a gentleman is exclusive to the male of the species... just as being ladylike is exclusive to females. Yes it’s true any sex can exhibit qualities of all shade till the cows come home... but a gentleman is a gentleman and a lady a lady...

The west has a horrible family unit which encourages people to leave their parents behind to pursue individualistic pleasures and they also have a horrible moral system centered around belief that you have to arbitrarily follow a list of divine commandments or else a deity will smite you. Confucius makes it clear that you cannot frighten people to be good or else they will require constant control because they will never learn _why_ they should be good and will never control themselves. Kindness, empathy, benevolence, etc, don't come from divine commandments but are part of all of us, and in order to cultivate 仁 it has to start with upbringing, with the family, but western families don't do this, and usually if they do try to enforce values it's through punishment only.
