How to be a Dark Winter (not a True Winter)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Dark Winter describes the natural colouring of people who are mostly True Winter, with a little Autumn. Today, we look at how to blend Autumn with Winter in apparel, accessories, and jewelry, using colours, imagery, and themes. (Images and shopping information at URStyle, links below).

    These deep dives between neighboring seasons are so helpful to understand the true nature of each season. The comment that struck me was "that's adifferent kind of danger", referring to Dark Autumn danger as "burned". All winter-influenced seasons have their element of danger. Embracing that aspect is key I think to living these seasons. Bright Winter - danger of the tropics and brightly colored venomous animals; deceptively cheerful True Winter - icy, formal distant; like an ice cave Dark Winter - formidable, raw northern wilderness; warm rich colors that don't comfort. In your book you associate the 3 Winters with different kingdoms. I always see DW colors as the colors of a warrior queen in a beautiful period drama.

    I agree that whatever you are, you might as well own it. Personality may not be chosen by us but behaviour is and too much softening or self-censoring somehow seems rehearsed or tense. It's as if others know already know us, or know when we're in disguise. Loved 'deceptively cheerful' :) The person comes across more authentic if they practice the value of their traits. No surprise, I could relate to 'don't comfort', the flip side being family members who describe me as 'would be good in an emergency'. As you said, embrace it. Like, using our power for good. But own it. And use it.

    I love the rich language you use when talking about color. It really helps to ground it for me. I can see the differences between colors but I struggle to predict what’s going to work as part of the whole picture. I’m a true winter and I can’t tell you how often I’ve gone wrong with burgundy. I finally figured out this year that it’s the brown vs purple influence that is throwing me off. It’s so helpful to have that ‘log cabin’ thought. I think that image of the log cabin will help me refine a lot of choices. I also have a top with the black and red roses thing going on and I’ve been struggling to figure out why it doesn’t work better than it does. I’ve noticed that it actually looks better with olive pants than anything else I’ve paired it with. I think it probably is the little bit of corally red at the center of the roses and the slightly muted green leaves that are throwing it off for me. I have a few tops like that- they don’t work as well as I think they should and I’m constantly trying to figure out why so I don’t make that mistake again.

  • @ChristineScaman

    @ChristineScaman

    I appreciate your comment and I'm happy to know that the language helps, rather than being too descriptive, or uses associations that don't resonate for apparel. I agree about the 'whole picture', I feel the same about decorating my home. I can choose single items but find it hard to predict the entire picture. Log cabin is easier with the warm type colours, like red or olive greens, it's just a matter of keeping brightness high. It doesn't always help for colours like yellow or blue, but that's when we turn to palettes or other comparisons (like try the item with actual clothes from the 2 Seasons). Prints can be predictable, sometimes better than expected, sometimes not. You could try comparing the print to outfits, either with clothes you already know work or selected strips of the palette.

    Thank you so much, Christine, for this video. I am also a dark winter and have had trouble with dressing as a DW instead of a TW. One of the things I also realized makes a difference is fabric texture, as you said with the reds, and also fabric reflectivity. I need more smoky and matt and velvety fabrics.

    The best explanation of winter season! I was told many yesrs ago I was autumn. I recentlyI analyzed myself as winter but had difficulty distinguishing between true and dark winter, and was also confused why would someone see me as autumn. You presented a side by side comparison of true and dark winter and explained how the DW can give a "cabin" (autumn) feel, and it all clicked for me - I am deep winter! Thank you! Love this video. Learning so much how to think about how color and texture work together. Would you ever consider doing videoes talking more about neutrals: like blacks and browns and whites. I'd also love to learn more about reds. There are so many holidays were red is a festive color. Oh and patterns! I've been told as a winter that I should look for patterns with more contrast between the elements. Sorry just throwing my whole wish list town in here. 😅 Thank you so much for your videos!

  • @ChristineScaman

    @ChristineScaman

    6 ай бұрын

    Thank you, I'm happy to know that you're finding new ways of seeing and wearing colour. I've thought about neutrals many times, the challenge being how to show them in video. A page of all-neutrals is like a page of pale green, soft blue, or any similar low saturation colour, they all start looking much the same. Black and white are challenging as well. The question that's always in my mind is, will this help a person buy great things. The new approach will be to include a few neutrals in videos that feature a Season to give them some context. We'll do a few and see how that works. Red is on our list as a colour to feature. Pink and purple came first to cover a few of the red options :) And patterns, I'd agree about separation or clear borders between the elements for most prints. There are fewer images of prints but I like the idea, I'll add it to our list, thank you for the suggestions!

  • @ChristineScaman

    @ChristineScaman

    I'm OK with the luxurious bar concept :) Really, for all the Seasons, some colours are always in supply in their time of year in store inventory, depending on where we live, while for others, we must be on the lookout. I was asked to add casual clothing ideas to the Pinterest boards, which may give you ideas (link in Desc box). Year-round, there is a fair bit of DW, even if we exclude black (though I like black in summertime, luxury bar maybe, also JackieO ). Fair to say that over the years, I've become skilled at recognizing good contenders from online images, which also happens with every Season. I go to the website, Women's, Shop All, Filter by colour. Look at one colour family at a time. Amazing what you can find!

    @@ChristineScaman Thank you so much for your thoughtful reply! Much appreciated. I actually do have a few questions… Firstly, I would love to know more about fabrication for BWs. How to wear bright, rich colours in fabrics that hold colours well, but don’t cheapen them (like some synthetics) or mute them (like a cotton tee washed a few times). I live in a relatively hot climate, and find myself longing for winter, so I can break out my colourful wool knits, as they hold their colour so well. For example, I loved what you said about leather and flannel in this video. I found it so interesting; it made me want to know more! Secondly, I loved what you said in your blog post about sheering down bright lipstick rather going for a muted colour lipstick. As a beginner BW, I would love more tips like this! There’s a lot to take on with BW, and a lot of the advice feels overwhelming and out of my comfort zone. Tips on how to slowly incorporate some of the recommendations with smaller changes like this would be amazing!

I didn’t think I could be a Dark Winter because I have very light skin. But the True Winter colors are just too cool and a bit too bright. @@ChristineScaman yes thank you they are so helpful figuring out colors. I especially love how you also talk about texture and pattern, since that has such a big impact on the perception of color. My questions / problems would be how to find the right shade and especially how to combine it well. I love the monochrome look, but its so hard to find matching pieces. Which colors / textures can I combine to be kinda monochrome but without the colors clashing too much? Practicality in buying is another big issue. It seems as fashion labels only have the main color palettes in stock, so often I have to choose between full autumn or full winter. Finding the right color in the store is a nightmare and I am currently looking into dyeing my clothes instead. Third, you mentioned "log cabin" and nature in your DW explanation. Is there a way to achieve more dainty energy with the palette? Like a flower field? I love autumn motives and feel, but I love mixing it up depending on the season as well. Thank you again 🙂

    I'm glad you enjoyed the video, thank you for commenting :) The best person to answer your excellent question may be your colour analyst. If you're fully cool, then True Winter and True Summer are the options. If you're wondering whether silver hair will change your Season, then I would say no. People remain the same Season after adulthood, although they may choose to use their palette in new ways to replace the colour on the head that has now become a neutral (from the same palette). Winters can look like Summers but in Summer colours, they are not at their best, whatever their age or hair colour.

    @@ChristineScaman I have a question somewhat related to this person's question. If you're "fully cool" you can be either Winter or Summer.. but how come there is no sliding scale between Winter and Summer the way there is for Winter and Autumn -- for example, Deep Winter is neighboring Autumn, and therefor has some warmth. Why is it that Winter cannot "neighbor" Summer in the same sense, and still be a Winter but with some added "softness" from Summer?

  • @ChristineScaman

    @ChristineScaman

    Great question. You'd think there could be a group between the 2 cools or warms. One reason for not having a combined group is that fewer colours would fit into it than you'd think. Whatever you do with pigments to move TSu closer to TW will change more than just the coolness. Add darkness, with blue, black, or brown, and you're actually in Soft Summer. Add saturation to bring Su nearer to W colour properties, and you'll be in LSu before you're in W. That's just how colour works and why the order of colour is so important to maintain in the Season map. Second, from that Season of a few colours that actually fit between TSu and TW, how would a person build a wardrobe from 3 or 4 colours? What works in a theoretical world may be hard to apply in the real world. They'll still to go to TSu or TW for most of their wardrobe and. makeup. Third, on the idea that we live in a practical world rather than a theoretical one, people don't drape equally in TSu or TW, there's one that's definitely better. Both are cool but the saturation of W is a lot higher and dropping to a medium level over an entire palette doesn't represent anyone I've ever seen. Please ask if this doesn't make sense, it's a very good question :)

  • @Snoozler

    @Snoozler

    @@ChristineScaman That was an excellent explanation! Thank you! I think perhaps it's just that I struggle with evaluating the appropriate chroma level for TW in the real world, more-so than temperature or depth (those are fairly easy). Since True Winter is supposedly more "medium-high" brightness.. it's hard to nail that sweet spot where it's not overwhelming bright like BW, and not *too* soft to the point of veering into looking Summer..

  • @ChristineScaman

    Glad it helped. Even in matte fabrics, TW colours are pure pigment. DW has more visible softness (gray), but not TW. I find it helps to have a comparison item, either a garment, piece of fabric, or the palette and say you're comparing blues to a new blue item, I ask myself, is this as blue as this is blue? Is the blueness equal?

    Great video as usual Christine!!! I’ve been rewatching the older videos hoping for more new content, and as a fellow dark winter this video is a dream. I do have a question, one that you technically already answered on your website, but unfortunately that specific question has an mp3 link that does not redirect anywhere in place of where the answer should be. The questions is: Do all the three winter seasons look good in the same type of white and black? Would a dark winter look better in a slightly greyed white and a browned black when compared to true winter? I personally find that to be true for myself, and been finding conflicting answers on that. Your input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for another amazing video

    Thank you, I'm glad it was helpful :) Sorry about the broken link, if you recall in which blog post that is, I can address it. Great Q about black and white. In specific terms, their whites and blacks are a little different. It can be easier to see the nuance by scrunching up the fabric and looking down in the folds for the colour tendency. DW will be in the neighbourhood of red-orange, TW can be blue-violet for white and the same for black or slightly greenish if the fabric has shine, and BW is barely yellow-green. These are the hardest colours and in the big picture, if the colour cast isn't evident, the item may work for the different Winters. My easiest way of solving white and black for DW is to use matte fabric or slightly textured, like a sweater with a slight cable knit, or texture that looks like fine-grained gravel, like the raised teal ring in the Jewelry panel.

    I'm glad this was helpful. Many of the items you own already are probably just fine. Colours don't have to be palette-perfect to be very good and wearable if they share enough with your Season to work well with the other colours, It takes time to move around in our Season and see ourselves as part of it.

    Hi Christine! Loved the video. I think I've seen them all. I have been draped a dark winter, but I never receive any compliments when I wear dark winter colors, especially dark winter make-up. It doesn't look bad, but does look very dramatic and somewhat gothic and not as flattering as lighter colors. I do receive many compliments when I wear cosmetics in the Soft or True Summer such a dark pink and dark coral. I have been told I have same coloring as Anne Hathaway. She is always typed as a dark winter on-line. Do you feel she truly is a dark winter?

  • @ChristineScaman

    @ChristineScaman

    6 ай бұрын

    Going only by Anne's contrast level between skin, eyes, and hair (if her natural colour is dark brown), I'd guess a Winter of some kind. I'd have trouble picturing SSu neutrals on Anne, or her screen appearance, at least. It's impossible to tell the specific Seasons apart with pictures and though DW is possible, I'd want to see that in person before discounting the other W types. Dark eye and hair colours are found in all 3 Winters, all 5 actually (meaning DA and BSp). I wish I could help with your question about clothing colours. It's one thing to know your Season, it's another to feel good in how you apply it. A second visit to the colour analyst may help to confirm the Season, practice colour choices, and set you on the path of being your own kind of DW.

    Regarding metalic gold on dark winters: perhaps we need to think in terms of two different types of gold that connect to two different colours within the the dark winter pallete. One type of gold that I feel looks good on Dark Winter is a very deep yellowy gold, the kind you see on 1980s hardware on handbags and buttons on flashy italian clothes - which is basically the metalic version of the Dark Winter goldenrod yellow. And then there is the cooler metalic gold, which is like the metalic version of the cool iced beige in the pallete.

    These are great suggestions, thank you for adding them :) I wondered if depth of skin tone is a factor and decided not. I did decide that scale and shape relative to body type is quite important in how jewelry looks, for example, I've seen pale gold (we're probably thinking of different colours) and the colour wasn't detracting but it wasn't fabulous, which could have been because the piece was too small for the person. Jewelry's effect comes from a small focused area of colour and shape, unlike clothes, and it's expected to elevate a look, meaning the purpose of an item seems to have influence over how well a colour works.

    My pleasure! I find that for me, the yellowy gold looks great with black, and with my skin tone, which is very pale and doesn't tan but which still has a slight an olive overtone, it brings out the olive in a very flattering way, without overheating my skin, and it connects and brings out the green-gold in my eyes. It seems to work best in small amounts, for instance as a single gold earring or as touches on a belt, mixed with silver.

Oranges and anything warm and bright darkens me and makes my skin blochy. The only thing....hmmm I think I look better in gold than silver jewellery so occassionaly I doubt my findings lol. Could it be that because the silver is so bright and I am so used to my gold jewellery which kind of looks similar to my skin colour idk. Since I think even dark winter would look better in silver right? Also muted colours in which I was comfortable in seem to be my enemy. I am more in focus in clearer colours. Black is overwhelming. Any input would be appreciated.

    You've collected many great observations and the Season that makes sense of them all may need a stepwise colour analysis to know for sure. It may be a matter of refining your observations by a few degrees, for example, adjusting 'anything warm and bright' to 'how warm and bright exactly'. You're so right to notice that your preference for gold may just be how you're used to seeing yourself. I'm not sure DW looks better in silver, but perhaps they have more flexibility with variations of silver than they might with gold. Black can be challenging to Winters in various ways, but they're still Winters. Most people come to their colour analysis with a list of personal observations that are more or less true and we work through them.

    Did you mean wearing colours other than black? Black is too easy to find and works with other palette colours but I find colours looks more interesting and attractive, like if Summers wore gray all the time. The magic of the palette is what the colours can do together. I understand what you mean though. In the beginning, I had a rule for myself that I could not look at, try on, or purchase black. Right away, I started seeing navy, teal, forest, burgundy. I also found that if I shopped with the entire palette in mind, I'd feel overwhelmed and buy nothing. So I shopped for the colours in a single strip until I found one, and then moved on. It grew from there and today, I rarely wear black except to film videos. Part of the problem is all the black in stores, but once we look at our habits and know why we keep buying black, it's easier to manage those shopping impulses. The palettes have 60-90 colours and it will be so worthwhile once you look in your closet and see You looking back You.

    Yes, fair enough. We all have colours we're more drawn to than others. When I see the colours at their most beautiful, they are being worn by a person the same Season. On a hanger, they're still just a colour and nobody sees our clothes on a hanger anyhow. Ink swatches on canvas is the best way to get an overall sense of the Season, but there may be not be a lot of feeling yet, like a painter's working palette compared with the painting. Hard to believe they're the same colours. The magic happens in what's possible with fabrics and accessories together with the right person. Sandra Bullock in a black velvet gown with a red rose choker, may be dark but I wouldn't see dampened. Wearing Light Summer colours, may be beautiful storybook colours on someone but not Sandra :)

    DW white is very slightly warm. An onlooker might call it white, rather than ivory or off-white, because it has a bleached impression that only Winter white may have, and no colour is visible within the white, also true of Winter neutrals. Once you hold it next to TW pure white, you may notice it's a touch softer and has a slight red-orange tinge if you bunch it and look down in the folds. Different textiles behave differently but this is the general idea :)
