    After seeing this I appreciate my black mare even more! One question though: I was taught to always sweat scrape (particularly when it’s hot) as water in their coat insulates and raises body temp. Your thoughts please? Thanks for the video - I learned 😁 Further to above I’m told the “scrape or they over-heat is a myth”. Agree to a point - but my girls coat will wet in the rain yet her skin is dry.

    The recent thing with heat and wet horses by thermal camera showed removing the water made them hotter, a continuous cool flow of water was more effective at cooling. They also compared it to after we swim, you feel cold in the air, but if you towel dried your self you feel warmer. Hope that makes sense.

  • @OliviaTowersDressage

    Yes in the heat we let them drip dry, in the colder weather we use this so they dont get a chill :) x

    Hi, I don’t know if you still want an explanation, but you may understand better why. So, it is more beneficial to the horse (if your goal is to cool the horse down) to keep the water on and let them drip-dry. You can compare it to sweat, the horse’s natural way of bringing down body temperature. The sweat evaporates, which takes away warmth from the horse. The same thing happens when you wet your horse, only more and faster. Of course, when bathing in winter you have to be extra careful so your horse won’t get too cold. So, you particularly have to sweat scrape and make them fully dry when it’s cold, not when it’s hot. Hope this helped you :)

  • @Hyuttah

    @Hyuttah

    If it's Really hot, dont scrape. Let them airdry. They will cool off much easier with a wet fur and Also dirt/sand Will stick Better, so they protect themselfes from insects.

  • @apbeauregard

    I'm not sure they did the studies these ppl r talking about, which I've seen as well, in extreme 100 degree 100 percent humidity weather like we get in Florida. Water nor sweat evaporates well in that so we do still sweat scrape here since to cool the horse it needs to be able to evaporate. Saying that adding a bit of linament or something to the water cans actually help it to evaporate better in those conditions.

    I'll tell you an easier way: 1. Prepare your materials (room, water, hose, bucket, sponge, scrubber [I like to use a rubber makeup scrubber you can put on your hand, really handy], shampoo, conditioner), I also like to brush the horse behorehand to get most of the dust and dirt out of their coat 2. Wet the horse starting with their feet and backside to let them adjust to the water, you can use a sponge to wet the face if your horse doesn't like the water sprayed on their face or try getting them to play with the water with their snout and work upwards from that when the horse is more comfortable 3. Mix shampoo with water in the bucket, apply it to the horse with the sponge starting from the highest point (their neck) and work your way along the horse making sure to completely lather them in the shampoo mixture, wash the mane 4. Take the scrubber and start scrubbing the horse, again, starting with the highest point, don't use the scrubber on sensitive areas like underbelly, legs, genitalia, snout and general eyes area, use a sponge for those 5. To easily wash the tail just dip it into the bucket with the shampoo mixture to wet it, then work the shampoo in with your hands 6. Wash the horse's face with a sponge or using your hands, if the horse doesn't like the sponge in their face 7. Rinse off the shampoo, starting with the face, then neck and working your way along, be sure to carefully wash everything out 8. Dry off the horse by wringing out its tail (don't hurt it obviously), squeezing the mane to get the excess water out and scrape it down or even towel-dry them if it's really cold (and put a fleece blanket over them) If you want to use conditioner then start by washing the tail, then mane and putting the conditioner in before you wash the horse's body. I sometimes use a coat spray with macadamia or argan oil or whatever (which is actually for my dog lol) to spray down the horse when it's about towel-dry and brush that through their coat if I need an extra shine on it.

    I discovered something accidentally - Head n Shoulders 2-1 is what I use for the first 'shampooing' and do the purple stuff for the second. The difference the H&S gives is unbelievable. Makes it super white, super soft (my whole horse is white). My husband used it accidentally on my mare and I was so wowed with how she looked. I stopped using regular horse shampoos after that.

    You must really trust your horse if you go behind it to wash the tail. Last person I watched they stayed to the side as they washed the tail. They said its a good habit to be in that position cause you dont know how the horse will react with different water pressure and just in case its good to stay too the side to not get kicked.

    Okay? I stand behind my horse when I'm brushing her? But I guess I shouldn't since my horse one time slowly kicked my cow..

    it's not that risky as long as you let the horse know you're back there, as long as they know where you are they won't be spooky and kick out in surprise :/
