Or as one garage handy man that looked at it said my screw drive door opener was garbage and wanted to replace the spring AND the opener for $400. Thank you for your video, was one of the first and best videos I watched to help us fix our unbalanced door, and knowing how to do so safely. Our spring was completely rusted “frozen” though so was unable to be adjusted at all until we first sprayed a lot of WD40 on it to remove some of the rust, then worked white lithium grease spray into the entire spring. Then we were finally able to get it loosened to easily adjust it. We ended up loosening it all the way and rewinding it based on the general recommended calculation we found of 7.25 full turns for our 7 ft door, plus an additional half turn did the trick. We originally tried 3/4 turn but it was too much and the door was too light and would slide up much of the way on its own, so unwound it a quarter turn and that fixed it. Thanks again!

Thanks for the great tutorial. I was able to adjust my garage door springs with ease! The only change I made was to mark the end of the cone with a Sharpie instead of scratching a mark on the bar. My garage door springs had not been adjusted in 10 years, so the springs were in dire need of service. I also greased the garage opener chain and lubed the hinges and rollers. The door is very quiet now and works like a charm! Thanks again for your help.

Thank you very much! I am about to tackle this job on my garage door. I had a pretty good idea of how to do it and most of the safety considerations (keeping body clear of the cone, hands out of the way, etc.) But, I hadn't thought about the safety ramifications of not "testing" it after tightening the set screws and the potential for being knocked off of the ladder by the door. I'm 51 years old and the last thing I need to do to my body is fall from 5 or 6 feet onto a concrete floor! Thanks for posting this!

Thanks for the video. I moved into a house with a steel garage door facing the south at the end of the summer, and the heat in the garage was brutal. So (with the weather now cooling off) I added maybe 40 or 50 pounds of foam board insulation to the door, and I knew it would be too heavy for the spring. I was clueless about how to remedy the situation before I found your video. Problem solved! And, I knew adjustment could be unsafe, but was confident after watching your video. Many thanks!

Hi Jimbeauxbledsseaux! We don't recommend reusing the same springs after you have added that much weight. Those springs no longer can lift the weight of the door properly, and will need to be replaced by springs that can lift those extra 40-50 pounds of weight.

I have a one-car uninsulated door that barely would stay up. It did, but it hung down too far and the slightest touch would send it crashing down. After the spring adjustment, it works just fine, and the opener works a lot better, too! And this was like 5 years ago this was done, and we still have the same opener, and the door still works good.

Great presentation. Concise and to the point and will help me deal with my current problem I have with my garage door chain drive spindle which suddenly broke. When this happened, the garage opener door fell to the floor with some force. Attempts to lift the door showed that it would not stay up indicating that the chain drive spindle was doing too much work to lift the door for some time. It did not occur to me to periodically check the door balance, as suggested in this video, so the advice presented here is still very useful today.

@@DDMGarageDoors Oh my gosh! I had put off the task for several years covering the one inch gap with a rolled up tarp every winter. I guess I was intimidated about touching that long wound up garage door spring. I even casually asked a couple of contractors if they would fix it but no one seemed motivated to take on the job. After watching your video and actually getting the courage to tackle the problem myself, I had the garage door lined up perfectly in less than five minutes. After loosening the bolts on the pulley, gravity alone lowered the door the one inch that it needed to close the gap. Thank you so much for you video and contribution to the online community.

Great video-insulated my door and had to adjust spring to compensate added weight. This video made it very easy to do. Appreciate the safety tips as well!

As garage door technician I see a couple of things on this video that I suggest not doing. I don’t recommended to add winds to an old spring because it could break while you’re winding it, If you’re winding an old spring never set the ladder right in front of the spring because if it breaks is gonna break in your face and you can get severely injured, you always set the ladder sideways so you’re facing the front of the cone so if the spring breaks the particles don’t hit you and the las thing, I f you are learning from this video it means that you’re not an expert so don’t ever bang the torsion bars like this man did because the bar can slip out and you can get hurt.

Hi Guillermo! We always recommend that if someone is using winding bars, they must be the proper size for the hole that they are to go into. You cannot use a screwdriver or something smaller like that because, as you said, the bars can slip out and you can get seriously injured. Only use bars that are made for the job that you are doing. We believe that this is the safest way to ensure your safety with the springs. This places you out of the way of the winding cone should something go wrong, and the spring break on you. Your way also sounds like it accomplishes the same task; keeping whoever is working on the door safe and out of harm's way. Thanks for your words of advice; we can never explain enough the safety precautions that need to be taken for those who are working on a garage door in their home. Blessings!

Just successfully fixed the unbalanced problem with my garage door after watching the video. A great video. I would be more helpful if you can add the direction of spring turn vs direction of door balance. Thanks again.

Thanks for the vid. The audio was a little difficult to understand while you were rolling the door especially and because of the echo in the garage but you had some really good tips. I didn't catch why you mark the winding bars with tape. I never thought about the spring binding on itself and moving the cone on the bar.

We mark the winding bars with tape so that we can know whether we have inserted the bars into the holes in the cones properly, so that we aren't injured when winding or unwinding the springs. After making a few quarter turns of the torsion spring, how far away is the etched mark from the cone? Did you say half an inch or a full inch? Is that distance just based on making sure the torsion spring doesnt "stick" together post the wind-up? Thank you.

I have a two car garage door with two springs. Do I perform the same process in the opposite direction for the spring on the left side?

What do you do with the vice grips if you have two springs or a dual door?

Sir: To balance a door w/ 2 torsion springs(one each side of center) is the procedure identical or would you only increase rotary tension approximately 1/2 as much for each spring since there two springs applying force-OR- with double springs do you not only have to balance the door but try to set equal tension in both springs to distribute the load evenly between them?

What do you do differently for a double spring 16' wide door?

I noticed that on the left side of the video, at the bottom of the garage door, there is a gap. I got this same gap after replacing both of my torsion springs. I didn't have a gap before they broke.

Hey thanks for the video! I was able to add a few turns to my spring. My door was pretty much falling to the floor when disengaged from the opener. One thing I experienced is when I loosened the set screws on the spring and proceeded to add a turn, the cable drums also rotated and the cables went slack. I had to re tighten the cables afterwards on each side. I'm fairly positive my set screws were loose all the way, so I'm wondering what happened. I was able to walk the spring so it's not like the cone was rusted to the shaft. Thanks for your input!

+bobn27613 If you have two springs, you usually don't need to vise grip the shaft like we show at 2:42, unless the shaft is distorted and the cone is bound to the shaft. Other than that you're adjusting two springs instead of one.

Very good safety advice and instructions. Afraid you missed a major problem with the door which should have been fixed before adjusting the tension. The cable on the left is completely loose which means that the right hand cable is now taking all the weight of the door. This is possibly the reason the door was not balanced!!! Easy to miss but I would have thought an expert like yourself would have spotted this before fixing the wrong problem. Nevertheless thanks for the really good videos you are providing.

+TechEd Thank you for your kind comments. In the trade we distinguish between balance and level. The door in this video was out of balance. It would not stay open by itself. It clearly needed more spring tension. I adjusted the spring to improve the balance so the door would stay open by itself, at I demonstrated at 6:49. More information about garage door balance is at ddmgaragedoors.com/blog/2015/11/03/a-balanced-garage-door/. The door was not out of level. At :11 notice that the door seals all the way across the floor. If one cable had been loose, the door would rise on one side, but it doesn't. Observe, also, the header above the door. The wood is even all the way across, confirming that the door is level. Adjusting the cable to level the door would not have helped the door to stay open. It would have caused one end of the door to rise causing a gap under the door.

Excellent video... How do I adjust the level of the door if it is not aligned properly against ground? When the door closes, there is gap on one side and the other side is strongly pressing against the ground, in other words, it is tilted to one side or not straight. Please help.

+thetruth I usually leave 1/8" to 1/4" between the door and jamb. You should be able to turn any of the roller wheels when the door is closed. If you have stops with vinyl follow our instructions at kzread.info/dash/bejne/Y4ll3LKuqpfggcY.html.

Great video and the one on changing out torsion springs was excellent as well. In this video if you had accidentally unwound the spring would you still use the 34/ or 7 1/2 turn numbers to get it back in line? Greetings from Arizona.

Thema inproblem Greetings from Chicago. Thank you for the generous comments. On a seven foot high door with four inch diameter drums you would normally wind the spring 7 1/2 turns, or a total of 30 quarter turns. On an 8' high door you would wind the spring 8 1/2 turns, or 34 quarter turns.

Hi Ricardo! This could be because he has springs that are too strong for the door. If they're too strong, the door will not close all the way, even if the springs are wound the proper number of turns. If it's a leveling issue, you should refer to our "How to Level Your Garage Door" video. Hopefully that's helpful!

After watching this video, I was able to balance my garage door. I added foam insulation as well as air foil insulation to my garage door which made the door heavier and out of balance. I ordered garage door torsion spring winding bars off Amazon for about $20. I did 3/4 of a turn and the door became balanced again. I was a little hesitant at first to attempt this, but do exactly as he says and it'll work out. You can possible make your own torsion bars by going to a big box store and get solid 1/2" thick metal bars and cut them yourself. Thanks for the video and if anybody wants to attempt this, go for it, but follow his instructions to a T.

Question, in a two spring setup that's very unbalanced with the garage door not even staying up at the top, if one spring (left) is already snaked similar to how you show in the video, do you fix that by walking it back first before starting to re-tension the springs or re-tension it first? My thinking is to walk it back first to ensure spring is fairly straight, re-tension and adjust accordingly to avoid binding. Anyway this is the best informative video I've seen on how to do this properly and safely and it has given me the confidence to attempt it myself. Now waiting for the winding bars to arrive... Hi Htpc Nz! Yes, we would say that you should fix that spring first so that it isn't snaking. You may want to make sure that your spring is stretched out the proper amount so that when you wind it, it won't snake. Then, we would suggest that you go back through the process of re-tensioning the springs to get the door to balance properly.

I have two torsion springs. I assume that I would split the necessary ~3/4 turns between the two springs? My door feels pretty heavy... thank you, love your videos

Hi Pete! If your door appears pretty heavy, it may be because your springs are not quite right for your door. Both springs, however, should be wound the same amount, regardless of size. Good video, thanks. One question, though. How should the actual winding be in terms of the force you would need to apply, should the winding be effortless or kind of hard? Thanks.

Depends on the weight of the door, but, and my math seems rusty this morning so take it FWIW, lets say the door is 100 pounds. Most drums are 4" dia which is 2" radious. Lets say he is using and 18" bar, that means he has 9X the leverage of what is lifting the door. 100 lbs / 9 = 11 pounds of force at the tip of the bar. Doesn't seem like much, until you think about how much torque is on that shaft. I gotta go, so maybe somebody will correct me if I'm wrong.

Hi Aquilez! You should meet some resistance to you, because the springs are already under tension, and all you're doing is really removing the thing holding that tension in place so that you can make sure to balance the door properly.

I have two torsion springs and based on installation they said 2 " to stretch spring now my spring does snake a little should I stretch it more or wind it more??

+thetruth Your springs are snaking because they're being stretched too much. I limit the stretch to the width of a single coil at ddmgaragedoors.com/diy-instructions/replace-garage-door-torsion-springs.php.

the black hinge/tracker thats connected to the garage opener opens a lil bit n then all of a sudden it just grinds like its not grabbing onto the bar to open. any idea? plz help thanks!

How many times can you a adjust an old spring like that? Or is that a somewhat new spring your adjusting?

Stanton Friedman Stanton, During the life of a torsion spring it is not uncommon for standard oil-tempered coated springs to lose as much as one complete turn of tension. Galvanized springs may lose up to two or three turns. The door in this video was probably 10-12 years old. I suspect the springs had never been adjusted because it needed 3/4 turn of tension added. It will probably break before it needs more tension. Springs usually lose a quarter turn of tension in the first few months. To avoid a possible service call during the first year warranty period installers often add an extra quarter turn when installing the garage door. If the installer does this it may be a year or two before the springs need to be adjusted, and then, only a quarter turn. In the next eight or so years the springs may need a quarter turn at the five year mark and another at the 10 year mark. Hence, three adjustments totaling 3/4 turn may be needed during the life of the spring if it is consistently maintained. These estimates are relative, but also somewhat arbitrary. For example, the lower the cycle life the sooner the springs need to be adjusted, and the sooner they break. For example, a 10,000 cycle spring may need to be adjusted 1/4 turn every year and it may break in four years if it is a high use door. I hope this helps.

Thanks, I just adjusted my door and I’m not so sure if I have strong enough springs because I can’t pick it up at all by myself. Is it possible to tighten too much? I’m afraid it will break

Yes, it is possible to tighten the springs too much. There are a number of turns that you ought to put on a spring based on the cable drum, the height of the door, and the radius of the tracks. Where do you get those two garage door spring tensioner steel bars, Lowes or Home Depot? I need to get some. Great video.

Hi Steve! We actually sell them on our website! We have 18", 24", and 36" bars, which can be beneficial depending on what size door you're working on to get the proper amount of torque to loosen the springs.

This is a very well presented video. But remember, the springs are under a lot of tension so move thoughtfully and carefully. I used 1/2" bar stock 2 feet long and the amount of spring wrapped tension or torque was still very forceful. Forget about using something like a big screw driver or long punch, etc. Go down to the hardware and buy the right tool. Be sure you know which way the spring is going to be turned to tighten it before you loosen either of the two set screws. Also Insert the bar in the hole that will hold the tension with the minimum of rotational movement before it locks up against the garage door frame. Only then should you back off the set screws.

This is all good stuff, Gordon! Yes, NEVER use a screw driver or long punch in the winding cone of a spring because it doesn't fully fit in the cone and could fly out at any time. Winding bars are the only safe way to wind your springs, besides a spring winder.

Hi, my door has 2 springs. Can I use vise grips also?

Hi goosecouple! You would repeat the same procedure on the single spring another time for your two spring setup. You don't necessarily need to use the vice grip as you will have the other spring still under tension, but it's never a bad idea.

Still have light shinning through left side. Please explain!!!

Hi James! This could be happening for a number of reasons. The door still might not be balanced, or the seal on the left side of your door may not be working as it should, and may need to be replaced.

is there a different process for a garage door with 2 springs?

Hi Don! Usually, you can repeat the process with two springs. You would wind the one spring and then the other.
