How To BALANCE Protein & Moisture for Strong & Healthy Hair

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Does your hair have a balance of protein & moisture? Do you want strong, shiny, healthy, hair? You need to balance your protein and moisture. If you don't have enough of one or the other, your hair will be dry (needs moisture) or weak (needs protein).
If you want to know how to find out which one you need. You need to do the hair elasticity test, which I explain in this video.
The secret to strong & healthy hair is having a perfect balance of both protein and moisture. But how do you do that? And how do you know which one you need?
Watch this video to discover how!

Wow. You saved my hair in one night! I was always confused about the concept of Protein, Moisture, and Porosity, but you explained it so simply and thoroughly. I was frustrated that my hair would still be poofy and frizzy even after using moisturizing products, but now I noticed that I literally have no protein in my hair products, so I over moisturize my hair. And I thought putting water on it every day would help 😅 After using a shampoo and conditioner with protein, and doing with my regular moisturizing wavy hair routine, it looks so much better. Thank you for this video.

Firstly thank you for all the concise well presented information your channel has to offer Kudos to you good sir. I find myself here after 4 years of hair grow out, strangely not due to a hair length goal or anything though. I just got tired of going to the barbers and caring about how my hair looked and before i know it a year had passed and that "awkward stage" was well an truly over (bless up my beanie hats). Now my hair is down to my waist and not in the best of shapes as this whole time I've pretty much neglected it with the "tie it up and forget about it" approach. Sure i wash it but there is no routine i stick too at all save trimming an inch off the ends when i find myself sitting on it (gotta say this hurts when it happens). Think it's about time to take better care of my locks, thank you again for pointing me in the right directions.

I have fine, wavy, post-chemo, frizzy, crazy hair. I have straightened the life out of it for years... plus it's coloured. I have just ordered the recommended shea moisture protein set and the living proof frizz set as I now know that it is moisture overload, instead of feeding the beast. I think right now I have high porosity, fine and low density hair. How long can I expect balance and what would be a good set to get for balanced hair.... it also freaks out with coconut rich products.

After growing out my hair a few years ago, it was noticeably very frizzy, tried everything, best I found was Redken Frizz Dismiss line, but what a pain so many products to get only a barely satisfactory result. So I finally tried a full Keratin treatment, what an incredible difference. Its not for everyone, but now I just get up and go.... comb/brush no need for styling products, wash it twice a week. Truly life changing.... Just an fyi... for those who are debating trying it.... one important note, your hair is much straighter afterwards... no more poorly formed curves and crazy waves (never could achieve decent curls or waves anyway

68 years old, fine dense 2c white hair to my waist. To keep my high porosity hair in check (non full washing, conditioning days), before I brush/comb my hair I split it in two and dampen the bottom half with a fine mister. I then treat each damp half with 2 drops argan oil, 2 drops grape seed oil, and two drops hyaluronic acid, which I rub together in the palms of my hand, work into hair, and comb/brush. I let it dry into its natural waves, and it is good for the day.

Brahh! I have been watching a bunch of your videos for my INFO on these hair stuff and in all of them I found at least 4 voice cracks! I used to have this problem a few years ago and I kinda figured a simple solution for it! The reason number 1 could be your water temperature! I used to drink very cold waters and that caused me voice cracks like hell! The reason number 2 could be this that you are not drinking enough water when you are speaking for a long time! Next time have a glass of water behind the camera and every 4 to 5 minuets have a drink. Hope that helps! thanks for the video..thumbs up

Hey Trav! Totally love your videos. They've really helped me a ton in making my hair healthier and giving my more confidence as a guy with long hair. I specifically really like how you're so science based! One concern/question I do have though, that I'd love to see you do a video on, is who is funding these studies? If, for example, Neutrogena donated 90% of the funds for a particular study, and they came to a conclusion that seems to support neutrogena products, that might be a bias worth reporting on. I think it would be really cool for you to do a video on the legitimacy of grooming science as it relates to the funding of those studies. The past 6 months or more I’ve been using Garnier Fructis which says it has “active fruit protein.” I’ve always had pretty fine hair that sheds quite a bit, but recently I’ve started to question if it’s been shedding more then usual. I put my hair in a braided hair style I used to do all the time and even though my hair is even long now the braids felt smaller and less full. I’m starting to worry that maybe I’m experiencing an overload of protein. I’m not really sure what to do or how to be certain.

But isnt the Coconut Oil Hydration Shampoo/Conditioner bad when you have Protein overload ? like Coconut Oil keeps Protein or doesnt it

Thank you Trav for this through video! I learned so much. When I did the elasticity test my hair strand stretched quite a bit and then it broke. I normally have straight/loose wavy hair but when my hair broke it curled up. Does this mean I need protein? I’m a bit confused why my hair strand curled up after breaking ......

It curled up bc it doesn’t have enough protein, protein makes the hair stronger so it would’ve retained its shape after stretching

Why for high porosity coarse hair do i need a protein based product? Isnt the hidration is needed for high porosity? I have also a bad elasticity

I have very similar hair to you. My porosity is most likely high, because my hair dries in two hours or so. I started using the ogx protein shampoo and conditioner. Maybe I used too much conditioner, but it left my hair looking insanely flat unlike Aussie miracle volume shampoo/conditioner I was using. I did the elasticity test, and my hair strand broke right away when I started to pull on it. After I shampoo and condition I started putting some coconut oil in my hair. With fine hair would it be better to just apply the oil at the ends so it doesn't feel so weighed down? Also what is the best way to add moisture to my hair? This is my first time growing out my hair, and I need help. Thank you.

Hi , when I did the moisture/protein test, my hair didn't break but there was no elasticity. Does that mean I need both moisture and protein?

Alright. What are you supposed to do when the root of your hair is like oily and feels dirt but it's only been like 2 days since you washed it but my hair is also really frizzy and dry and do NOT like humidity. I stopped using any products in my hair except I put Argon oil in it when my hair is still wet on days that I know it's going to be really humid outside

I’m having a hard time figuring out how to proceed with my hair.. my salons are both over an hour away so I’m trying to figure it out myself but I’m not sure where the damage came from. My strand test from many sections show easy breaking hair. It used to be more on a normal side when I did it. Recently I’ve been heat styling more because of summer humidity and frizz. I sometimes forget heat protectant but the protectant I use has protein. I just switched from olaplex to keratin based treatments because I heard it can help smooth, straighten and get rid of frizz.. within a month or so of this is when I noticed more frizz and breakage! I recently just put Aveda smooth infusion in to try and style it because I’m at a loss and very confused on what to use anymore.. Idk if its damage or protein overload.. I’m on a long list of articles and videos trying to figure it out but if anyone has any ideas, please lmk! Oh in the last six months or more like since Halloween, I’ve had highlights and fashion colors for the first time but it’s all been ok. I did have some patches of damage but overall, it was healthy and I have gone over some highlights more than once but I only use stains and color theory to change up colors. Even still, the hair was frizzy but good. I regularly did a combo of moisture, conditioning and olaplex about every 6 weeks using all colorsafe cept once with dumb $3 suave but as humidity rolled in.. I realized I didn’t know if I could do a relaxing or straightening treatment with color so I been holding off and just improvising which when this is all happened :( I haven’t straightened my hair 2020 summer or bleached since about March but yeah idk what to use anymore.. most of my products have protein :/ Oh and my hair can be dry and break but it holds onto moisture like most curly hair. I recently did a heartless style and 12plus hours later, it was still very damp. All I can consider now is different ways to style my hair or different tools to cut back against traditional blow dry and iron?
