How to Balance Faith and Career as a Christian

We often talk about faith and career in terms of balance. As if you can "have it all."
In this talk, Steve offers a different way to confront this important life question. Because, as he learned from an Athonite monk and Wall Street attorney, faith and career isn't about balance.
It's about putting first things first.

Thanks for the video Steve! As a graduating ME student in college, this was definitely encouraging. I'm a recent convert from Protestantism, so faith has always been my priority (I was even kinda a zealot as a Protestant...). But, this means I'm not as "all in" to a career as others. Nor do I have some career "passion" I want to pursue beyond keeping my prayer rule and going to Church (and reading some Church History, and learning Russian, and reading some good books...). I have been struggling to see how I could ever be a godly husband and father if I'm not as much a "go getter" in a career as those around me. But, I am grateful for the call to prioritize: to seek first the Kingdom and everything else will come. To have a job that can support a family, but not one that makes it impossible for me to keep my prayer rule or spend a healthy amount of time with my Church family and my future family (when I marry). This is definitely something I have felt for awhile and this video helped explain what my guardian angel has been trying to whisper in my ear the last few years. I am definitely taking notes on this video for my journal :) Peace be with you.

Haha! So here's what I think. I didn't click the video because I am dealing with a personal dilemma. I already know what my priorities are. I clicked it because I thought it's interesting, fresh and I was very curious to see its conclusion! It sure has a plot twist! To be honest it touched me in a different way. I too have grandparents (as a Greek) that embody the example of the Greek speaking Christians of Asia Minor in present, and compared to their constancy I feel sorry for myself. I never know what I am going to do with my life and I doubt every single step. But, I always remind myself that He knows better and He will show the way. And the truth is, He always miraculously does.

It was a great video! But how do we put God first? For example, im going out camping with my scout group this summer, and i maybe will have the minimum amount of free time (the rest of the time will be work and learning) what do i do? Do i try to repeat prayers troughout the day, say all others like before eating and say some repentance prayers and prayers of forgiveness before sleep? With this video i learned that the reason i get burned out from praying and am sometimes lazy to pray is because i look at it as a chore (as a secondary thing). How can i look at it as my main purpouse in life? Thank you and God bless you!

Watching this made me want to go a complete 180. So I'm disabled, with a mental illness, and I've been working incredibly hard to be able to hold a job and "get my life back on track." The result is not only have I been unsuccessful, but I've been obsessed more with my life than with God. Maybe instead of focusing so much on doing something I've actually been deemed mentally unfit to do, I could spend time that I would be spending working and go to church more and volunteer more, and simply live on less. Anyway, thanks for the video. It helped.

I loved the content Steven really awesome. I struggle with how much time and effort do I put in my career, the more time I spent on my career that is less time I spend on learning the faith. Learning the faith can save the soul long term but having a succesfull career can provide temporary benefits here on earth.

What an absolutely bold move to try to answer such a difficult question in a short concise video! Kudos to Steve and the Y2AM crew for succinctly answering a question that I hear over and over again from young adults. This video will be a great primer for when this question pops up again. The Community reference (though I love the show) felt out of place but the example worked. Steven Covey’s famous 7 habits also says - “Put first things first.” And that is advice that we don’t hear enough. Thanks for making the video. Definitely well worth the time. I am sure it will help many. May God bless. My only suggestion is that you should considering making some follow up videos because this only skims the surface of the issue. Foe instance, the video takes such a negative view of “balance” and that could be misinterpreted that moderation is bad. There is an importance to moderation and balance in faith. Our modern culture is laden also with this concept of extremism and addiction based on an “all-in” attitude. For example, eating carbs is bad so I am going “all-in” on a no-carb diet. Another aspect to consider is how young adults become frustrated in their occupations because they don’t feel like they are doing enough to change the world. And the humility and yet boldness needed to discern whether a career change is in order or not.

You raise good questions, Father. It's a hard thing to do when offering a talk or idea in the abstract, rather than in conversation with people. I hope communities and groups of friends can dig into this a bit deeper, and wrestle with how it applies to them. This was written as a conference talk, with a Q&A afterward. I think some wrestling is important here.

Great video! So many things I totally agree with when it comes to parish leadership and volunteering in church ministries/ being a Christian. I know it's easy for me to say as a stay at home mom as I do not have to worry about making money for the family...but one of my favorite words is humility. It is not about me, it's always about God. And I do not ever want to become too busy for Him. But it is something I hear so much as a Sunday School director "I am too busy to volunteer, I have so many things going on in the weekends, not this year, maybe next..." And I worry as I know our children are watching... and it is not surprising to me that nowadays they seem too busy to spend time with God as well.

What a relevant video for me right now! Currently, I am deciding on what to do with my life as I prepare for my two year study to receive my bachelor's. I am a Psychology major, and I am deciding on what area do I want to apply this major in. A video like this is very helpful to me. I've decided, however, that the will of God is more important than anything else. If I have to decide between something that will not glory/honor God vs something that will honor God, I must do what will honor God. :)
