Thank you. Good explanations & coverage. 👍
I can do a back deck roll but fail my kick flips. I would love to see a video comparing the two techniques and tips. Thanks for the videos

Masterclass! I give it a try today and it worked at the first time... Thanks for the tip with the sinkin hand that helped a lot🙏
Thanks, you helped me get it finally. Great angles in the vids, great way to teach. Helped me to see it in two motions, with the majority of the move being that end brace...
Great video thanks for sharing. This is the best how to back deck roll video I have seen! I especially appreciate your shoulder safety comments.

so glad to hear that it worked for you!
I,ve been kayaking for 25 years and can count the times I did a front deck roll on my one hand. Always thought it was abnormal, but as you said it gets me upright in a jiffy. (I've never hurt my shoulders). I also feel more comfortable with my paddle in front of my face than by back exposed...Glad to hear professional kayakers also use it.
Damn this is superb !
Much Appreciated!
Love watching your form in this video. The way you end your roll in the catch phase really touches up a spot ive always been sloppy on. I can dry head roll, but don't think ive ever tried just stopping mid roll and coming up without momentum. Thanks for the Vid!

Hi Nick as a former instructor, I think the more tools in your tool box or rolls you know how to do it’s always a bonus in the water.

I totally agree
Thanks for the crystal clear demonstration and explanation of the kayak back deck roll. I've been able to do the back deck roll for C1, but always got confused about the physics of the kayak version (that damn second blade :P). I guess it's time to practice.

glad to hear that you enjoyed it. Might just be time to jump back into a K1.
Great vid. Greetings from the best black kayaker in Colorado. Lol
Good vid. Just one thing about the wording. I'd say a back deck roll is one where you roll up from inversion but the one you are showing, the continuous, no-set-up roll from up to up, is more of a trick roll, particularly when dry head and particularly when used for other tricks. They are diffdrent eniugh to warrant different names. A sea kayaker rolling up from the back deck after a 5-second inversion is a back deck roll. I would describe what youre talking about as a rodeo roll.

I see how they could be seen as different rolls, though honestly the technique is pretty much identical, which is why I can them all just a back deck roll.
such a good explanation. i am actually the junior freestyle champion of austria and i just do it all the time! especially over waves and stuff it is just the shi* !!!! good video! awesome explanation!

Stay inside the box, keep those elbows in a bit more
great & man!
Do you have any tips for flipping to the right and doing a back deck roll ? Is there something you focus on to counteract the less favorable blade angles ? I cannot recall anyone talking about what you can do besides cocking the wrists back pretty far ; do some people shift their grip a little ?
I can back deck roll, but not offside with a 45 degree feather - do you do both sides? Can you show a vid on offside back deck roll? Cheers
Just been watching Ken (Whiting) showing this ending in a forward lean, not up on the back deck...what's your take on this variation Nick?
Nice video...How about explaining how to do the back deck roll in a combat situation when you are not set up? That would be great...

Hey Stephen, great point. In a combat situation I use it the same though a speedier version. That or when I'm upside down I simply start in the back position and hipsnap/ brace upright.
Boa maluco , ensina nóis os paranauê.
I can do the back deck roll if I intentionally go over and use the momentum but if I flip unexpectedly and don't have plenty of momentum, I get stuck. I've tried flipping and pausing for a couple seconds while upside down and then trying it and I don't even get close, in spite of me being able to do them almost 100% when practicing them in a creek, half slice or play boat. What is the trick to still getting up when you find yourself face down with no momentum? Until I get there, I have zero confidence in using them in rapids. Also, with proper technique I don't feel pressure in my shoulders but if that technique gets off even a little, I immediately feel it in my shoulders which makes me nervous as there seems to be very little margin of error for this type of roll.
Good info. Having had both shoulders fixed the trailing shoulder in this move looks to be loaded pretty heavily. Not sure but I'd like to try it in a way that I can keep my shoulders less extended. Perhaps a quicker stronger hip snap over the top.

yes, and make sure to keep your elbows in to reduce pressure on your shoulders
I stopped doing this roll because of my shoulder(s). I will try the bent arm trick. Cheers. By the way, would the bent arms work for airscrews/kickflips? Not that I am anywhere near doing either of those but a man can dream. Thanks again.

Yes, it works for those tricks as well, just keep your elbows tucked in.
Hi, does anybody know is it crucial to be able to do back deck roll at both sides? I am failing my left side =(
I would like help with the timing of kick flips and air screws.

Here is a video I made on the airscrew. Let me know if this helps. kzread.info/dash/bejne/lnaL29t7edLPaLA.html
I always see the back deck roll being taught to the left or "on-side" orientation. That much even this creaky, old wankster can do. BUT -- what are some tips for when one falls on one's right or, in the case of a back deck roll, "offside"? I've tried to get this working but the usual 30 degree paddle offset hangs me up! Thanks in advance for your response!!!
@nicktroutmankayak

when using a 30 degree paddle it will try and pull your paddle deeper when sweeping across the surface. To over come this you need to cock your wrists even more to overcome the extra 30 degrees from the offset. The idea is that your blade that is sweeping should be parallel with the surface of the water.
Is this the easiest roll for a beginner to learn??
I would like to ask regarding other method of back deck roll. Many years I do back deck roll using back blade of my paddle. I think it’s more easily and more safely: I don’t turn my wrists, my hands and shoulders also in the normal position. What do you think?
@nicktroutmankayak

Sounds interesting, quite a different technique for sure.
2:57 isn't a back deck roll right ? always wondered how to do this roll
Does the length of the boat matter? Seems it's always demonstrated in a play boat, but you mentioned using it when creeking...

For me it's a little easier in a shorter boat, but you can definitely do it in bigger boats. I learned on a 6' Pyranha 420, and then I recently got an 8' Axiom, and I definitely have to throw my hips harder on my Axiom. I would try to learn in a playboat if you have one
@nicktroutmankayak

you can do it in any boat, though you can only really do a 'dry head' roll in the playboat as the creek boat has too much volume.
I’m struggling to finish leaning forward, I keep on ending up still on the back deck with one hand on the paddle underwater and I have to throw my hand over to get me upright. Any tips?

You are suppose to stay back, don't worry you're doing it right.

Try finishing looking down at the water/down at your paddle blade. That should complete the roll and you won't need to worry about where you're leaning.
Can you do that on a long boat?
@nicktroutmankayak

must certainly. You wont be able to keep your head dry, but definitely can do a back deck roll.
Please add more progression in your videos.
