Brian, as a self-employed entrepreneur, in this country there’s a saying I ALWAYS tell my business associates and that is…It’s not hard to make money in this country, it’s hard to keep it! I think that your tax saving tips are outstanding, but I would have liked for you to have included the many advantages of being self-employed and especially the many tax advantages there are when investing in Real Estate. After all it’s not just about lowering your taxes but also about building assets. Doing both is dependent on having/knowing the correct information to legally use the system of IRS regulations to your advantage.

One thing I did change was my W-4. Found out there was a change a few years ago that made it easier to adjust your taxes if you have a working spouse. Both my wife and I are now taxed at the higher rate. Seriously, if you have a working spouse, make sure you check to see if you indicated this on your W-4, especially if you find you owe money each year and wonder why they are not taking enough taxes out of your paycheck.

I can expand on this issue bcuz I was in public service and saw firsthand idiots who don't support proper tax allocations. But then people are openly donating to politicians who actually move the tax money around to favor themselves and the private corporations backing them. At the end of the day y'all just played yourselves.

Because you and I both know that the majority of our taxes don't actually do any of that crap. It all either gets wasted on stupid projects that don't actually accomplish anything that was set out to do, gets spent on the administrative costs of a copiously bloated bureaucratic system, or is used in $1.7 trillion 5000 page omnibus spending bills that no one asked for which *somehow* end up making the crooks and criminals in DC richer because most people don't grasp how much of a stranglehold lobbyists have on that god forsaken place. So yea, unless the people actually start getting some real representation from our government I do not believe they deserve a single dime.

Best advice for self employed is get a CPA. Will only cost a few hundred a year and they will help you setup the best structure for your specific situation. E.g. going with an S-Corp election is generally a good way to save on taxes, but for some will just add work/expense w/o any real benefits. The CPA will also keep up on changes and new things as well as now you have someone to talk to the IRS for you if that is ever needed.

I've dealt with the IRS in the past and found them to be relatively fair so long as you are honest and transparent with them. I don't feel like I'm a sucker for wanting to fund government. Being a sucker is to not vote and not get involved with government so that the things they do with my tax dollars are reasonable.

I don’t know if it’s sad or a proud moment that I knew all that was applicable to me from doing my own self-employed taxes for 15+ years. I used an account ant one year and gained knowledge of an SEP IRA which has higher contribution limits. That was worth it for that one year lol.

I liked your videos last year, glad to see you poping back up in my feed. Unfortunatly, most of this won't apply to me, no dependents, no investments and no health expenses outside of company sponsered plan costs, already doing 401k, still owe more money then I think is fair. Might be able to use some of the commuter stuff though. Thanks :)

Great info. The Dependent Care FSA was one I hadn't heard of before. I could see that one thing saving us a few thousand a year in taxes for school expenses, babysitters, aftercare, after school programs, and day camps.

It’s not that useful, the contribution limit is $2,000 a year which is less than i pay in a month. Also you can just deduct it when you do your taxes which you’re going to have to do anyway because you can only set aside $2,000 through the FSA

Another issue, is you have to report every dollar you gave and to whom. So unless you want to report your babysitter income (taxes on the cash), out of luck.
