I've experienced that exact problem with the same linear drain system. Elegant pro solution like always, Sal! Love the look of that tile with the linear drain. It dang near disappears!

Always a pleasure to see your work Sal. I would have thought that the second, shorter membrane to meet up to the drain membrane would have been laid before the larger membrane to avoid any lippage in the membranes.

I have also done it that way, really makes no difference.

Does all the wall tile go behind the floor tile? Or just at the drain? Assuming just the drain because of the cuts on the slope.

Hey Sal, I love your work. I just did one very similar with a herrinbbone pattern marble mosaic. I handled it a bit differently against the wall part. I actually cut and glued small pieces along the wall, then I glued the sections to the grate itself. How are you gonna grout the unglued lip without it sticking to the membrane. Wax paper or something?

grout it while it is removed from the shower.

What's the electrical stamping tool called? Looks like you are using it to set the tiles in place of using a rubber mallet

Sal, are you concerned about light colored marble over a bonded waterproofing system? I have the same basket weave marble shower floor coming up in a steam shower. My concern is water discoloration in the marble using thinset and mapei fa grout. I've read some info about setting with epoxy and grouting with epoxy. Is this necessary? Thanks.

Yes I know all about that, but never had the issue affect me. I was considering doing the epoxy method on this job. Maybe next time.

As usual great information, Don't know if id trust that kind of drain with the hair i see in drains lol!

@@SalDiBlasi The metal grate seems preferable since you're going to have to remove and clean it every 10-30 uses I think...

awesome! as usual. got a ? do u prefer to grout your shower perimeter before wall tile or do u use backer rod and 100% silicone for soft joint. someone on tile geeks doest it silicone and has reasoning in doing so. he seems to know what he's talking about, its just ive always grouted not knowing if soft joint matters around shower floor tile. thanks sal love your work. It will, except on the drain wall.

Beautiful work Sal. I've never seen or thought of over lapping the wall side of the drain cuts to avoid cutting in slivers and make your wall tile butt tight. The edges of the tile over hanging are not thinsetted down, does this allow for proper draining and still allow the drain to be removed? This is a game changer as I usually have to build that back wall out a half inch.

That's because it's NOT the right way to do it.

Nicely done Sal as always. What was the width of that finished shower floor? Did you use a pre sloped Schluter pan or mud it yourself?

Actually yes, you can use the same approach and install the membrane over existing tile and add another layer of tile. Be sure to use a high polymer content thinset so it will stick. You will need to replace the existing drain grate with a new one in order to raise it to the correct height.

I commented on another video of yours from a couple of years ago with a linear drain, mistakenly thinking it was a tile-able grate like you did here, and commented on what Schluter says you're supposed to do to install them. I did not think you could overlap the tile along the back like you did - and it seems that by doing so you're prohibiting some of the draining capability of the drain. You don't think that will be a problem? I see that you can still take the drain out of the channel for cleaning or maintenance - or to clean out the hair filter, but it still seems to me the actual water draining will be somewhat slowed down.

Once the shower is in use and water is of course going to be draining, is there and worry of water creeping underneath the mosaic tile around the drain thus possibly eroding and loosening them out of place? Sharp and spot on craftsmanship by the way.

Have to take your time and go slow.

Just one issue!How to clean a hairs clogged drain,if you put wall tile on a top of drain!?Take or wall tile every time!and one more think,top edge of drain supposed to be even with tile to protect tile from chipping and releasing ,specially with natural stone!It looks nice,but in couple months will be lot of problems!

These drains are very fancy but I think they cause more problems in the long run. Just my unproven feeling about it but I see water infiltrating the bottom of the wall tile behind the drain slit. Not to mention the tiles popping off the drain cover due to different material shrinkage. And lastly: how TF do you grout the drain area? LOL

@@SalDiBlasi I am not knocking your work that is state of the art as usual but rather that particular drain style. I have seen enough moldy shower grout lines to suspect that the system is not going to hold out as well as a regular center drain. I'll just say that I would not put that in my shower. :-)

I will give you the fact that they need more maintenance and should be cleaned at least every couple of months, however none of the other problems you mentioned happen.
