How to build your own radial plate, go to Walmart or somewhere similar and by a large pizza pan and drill 1\8 inch holes 1\2" apart around the out Side perimeter go the hardware and buy the appropriate number of 3\4" by #8 screws and twice the number of nuts as screws,. With a little engineuity you should be able to come up with a good radial plate. 73 from ki0ad/Jim rill

PS you can build the thing for way less than 100.00 and it will be round rather than square.

Our local Do-It Center Hardware has a very complete collection of fasteners. Much more varied than ANY Home Depot. Their stainless steel selection is especially impressive, and in the electrical department they also carry several anti-seize types.

Dave, think about what you said about the lug touching the plate, the log is on the bolt, bolt touching plate, if the grounds were not touching the plate why have them.

Zero 5 43' vertical in very small backyard. Have you a comment on using hardware cloth as short 2" Wide radials? Effective if only a few about 10 or 15 feet long, or waste of time?

My DX Engineering radial plate has been in service for 11 years now, surviving overgrowth, fireants and one errant truck.

What kind of a patent can one get from drilled or punched holes in a flat steel plate? Sign of the times or am I missing something here?

I have a Cushcraft 9-band vertical that is advertised as “No ground radials required.” I had it roof mounted for several years with ok results. It is now ground mounted and works ok. Even though radials are not “required,” would the system benefit from radials as you described in this video? Thanks. LARRY - W7LDT

So, you can't just pack thermite over the radials and base and just fusion weld them all together, huh? (WEG)

14 AWG is the minimum wire gauge for cald welding.Find a suitable mold might be difficult to find. Wire terminal ends is probably the easiest (and less expensive) route to take. Also 316 Stainless is much more corrosion resistant than 304 Stainless. 304 contains 18% chromium and 8% nickel while 316 contains 16% chromium, 10% nickel and 2% molybdenum. The molybdenum is added to help resist corrosion to chlorides (like sea water and de-icing salts).

DX Engineering also sells plastic, bio-degradable staples for fastening down radials. That way, you won't be stepping on rusty staples years down the road. Environmentally conscious, too.
