Here’s a tip for getting stuck hole saws off the mandrel. Get a socket adapter that fits your impact driver and on the other end of the adapter, place the socket that fits the shaft of the mandrel. Hold the hole saw tightly with a glove. Place your impact driver in reverse. With your other hand, give a few quick squeezes of the trigger of the impact driver. Usually this will release the stuck hole saw

Was close to returning the hole saw I’d just purchased but your video was exactly what I needed to hear (and see cause I’m super visual) what got me to feeling safe and confident in my connection was when you reiterated there’s no part that goes on the inside -and the Allen wrench. I did the thing-I felt safe -and I made my moms awesome old oak desk accessible to the outlet so its now my new work space AND I feel like a bad ass.

Stick a rod through the slots on the side of the hole saw and use an adjustable wrench in the mandrel. Alternatively you can use an oil filter strap wrench( not the chain type) to grip the hole saw while you use the wrench on the mandrel.

  • @OrinLinwe

Found this video after having a cheapo hole saw drill bit that was "fused" , and looking for tips to fix it. I just got it fixed by running it under very hot tap-water for a minute (tills its almost too hot to touch) and then a minute of cold tap-water. After doing this twice, the drill bit went from completely fused to fairly easy to unscrew. I unscrewed it by keeping the end of the drill-bit steady with an adjustable wrench, and inserting a screwdriver in one of the holes of the hole-saw (use the biggest one you can get in there, as it's surprisingly easy to break thin screwdrivers with the amount of torque needed for a stuck drill bit). If the drill-bit is extremely "fused", you could probably put it in a boiling pot for 10 minutes, then drop it in a bowl of ice-water for a minute, see if it is looser, and if not, repeat. Big, sudden temperature changes can obviously break brittle, thin materials, but a hole-saw drill bit is probably not in any danger. So, there's hope for cheapo "permanently fused" drill bits. PS: do not use an electrical drill on low power-setting as the counter-torque! It stresses the motor, and even if "you're being careful", it's way too easy to accidentally hurt yourself. Use non-powered hand-tools (a wrench and a screwdriver). It's probably obvious for professional people, but I am leaving it here just in case, because it was a fleeting thought I had as I was trying to come up with a solution. And if I thought of it, chances are that someone else might too (thinking that the electrical drill is way more capable at creating the "needed" torque than what your hands could). You really don't need that much torque; all that is needed is sub-milimeter changes in the grooves of the drill-bit, and a few sudden temperature changes will fix that. Another tip I saw, from another youtube-video, if you have the more expensive hole-saw drill bit with pins, is to go over the sides of the drill-bit a few times with a hammer (at an angle), as that also creates enough stress for the fused scoring to loosen up a bit. This does not work with the cheapo-version, which was what lead me to try using hot and cold water (after breaking a thin screwdriver). Cheers!
