For those of us who haven't used a crimping tool in this way before, I closeup of how it's crimped, and even which of the three choices, would have made this video much better. Also can't hear you!

This would have been a useful video if the wire gauge and the recommended length of insulation to cut off had been mentioned. On the positive side, I just did a preliminary buy from Renogy and am very pleased with the quality of what I received.

MC4 is normally used with 10 or 12 AWG wire. 10 AWG is slightly thicker, harder to bend, and more expensive, but will have slightly lower voltage drop and therefore lower power loss than 12 AWG.

  • @RenogySolar

    @RenogySolar

    7 жыл бұрын

Hi there, The leads from the panels to the controller can have different lengths, but if its too long, you'll have a voltage drop and lose a lot of energy. If it's super far, it might not even charge the battery. Also, if your panels are set in parallel, the drop would be worse. When connecting the controller to the battery, we use o-rings because they are pretty universal, but you could use other connectors.

I noticed that, in a lot of these MC4 connector videos, people are stripping a lot of insulation off the wire (like an inch!) I already made a bunch of solar cabling that only has 1/4" or so of strands exposed... it's enough to go through the two metal tabs that actually get crimped, plus a tad bit more. Is this enough? Do I have to cut off and redo all of my MC4 connectors or do you think I'm good? Would hate to lose the money for the connectors but it would be much WORSE if I install everything and THEN have a problem.

  • @RenogySolar

+Christmas Eve Hi there, you don’t need to strip the wire back a whole inch. At the very most, we'd recommend just below half an inch--as long as it get past the metal tabs and just a little bit more after that. If that's what you did already, I wouldn’t be concerned about it at all. Please feel free to message us again if you have more questions, thank you.

This video did not help me. I just purchased a 5 pack of these. It came with the plastic housing and internal parts. I was able to get the connection to conduct electricity when I connected the internal parts together, but not in the plastic housing. What is the secret to get this to work in the plastic housing? It took me a long time to figure out what my problem was. I had already purchased a 10 foot extension with MC4 plugs on both the black and red wire. I cut the wire on one end to connect directly to my solar charger. and put two of the new mc4 connectors on my solar panel. For the life of me I could not get electricity to pass through the wire. I ran out of day light and gave up on this. On another day, Thinking the wire connectors were bad I cut those off the cable and then installed another set of MC4 connectors on the wire. Again I am unable to get electricity to pass through the connectors. I pulled all 4 connectors off and started from scratch again. After several hours of messing with this I was able to get power from the solar panel into the charge controller by removing the plastic parts and then connecting the metal parts together. Works every time, just fear I will short it out. I tried several combinations of putting the metal part in the plastic part but when I did this the connector did not work. I then started to test connectivity with my volt meter. I could not get any of the 5 pack to conduct electricity no matter what combination I used to put them together. The two ends I cut from the cable were able to connect together and pass electricity. I am so frustrated with Renogy about this that I will choose another company when I go to add solar panels to the roof. If I can t seem to get their connectors to work I don't want to try their solar panels. Just ordered new connectors from another company.

I expected better from one of the most popular solar companies. What length should be trimmed from the end of the wire? What gauge wire should be used? No mention that stranded wire ends should always be twisted before crimping. Can the crimped on terminal be removed from the housing after it has clicked into place? There are small parts not shown in the nut portion. They could have shown proper orientation of those parts. It was obvious the wrench was slipping on the ridges of the nut and probably not getting it very tight. And then there is the poor video quality. Makes me not want to buy anything from Renogy. Specially after seeing the comparison of the 30 amp charge controller that is the same as the Rich branded controller. The terminal connections are light duty on the Renogy branded version. The search for quality continues :(

I appreciate the concept of making a "helpful video"...but this was a less than stellar effort. Go back to the lab and try again. This video does not reflect well on the Renogy quality components. Boost the audio significantly...better lighting...get some close up views on what is going on with the crimper tool and the assembly tools. You can do better than this.

How does an video by the actual Renogy Solar company sounds so awful.....kinda speaks to quality in my view.

Just thought I go ahead and comment, i’m going to go ahead and press a few letters and i’ll very likely go ahead and submit the comment but before I go ahead and do that i’m just going to go ahead and tell you the video was pretty bad for sound quality and appalling for instructional value, right, time to go ahead an press submit so i’ll go ahead and do that

I get it... black table with black wires and connectors...like magic. One can really see what you're doing. You didn't explain the male and female metal parts that you crimped on and which connectors they go to either. Not very informative.

Audio at max is still too low and black table with black connector isn't good contrast. More important are the details showing the orientation of the rubber inserts...close-ups would be helpful, depth of metal tips needs to be discussed...video needs work.

Non-professional video *lacking required information-* just like when you call Renogy tech service. WHAT length do you strip? WHERE in the crimper does the fitting sit? WHAT orientation is the furl relative to the jaws? Listen folks- you *NEED* to watch a better video before crimping MC4 fittings, this one will get you in trouble with your install. Renogy is just a middle-man for Chinese manufacturers, they don't know *anything* about any of "their" (reseller) products that isn't in the same instruction manual you get. You MUST get the orientation of the barrel in the proper rotation relative to the crimper jaws, watch a better video.

Maybe I am old fashioned but even in these politically correct times when we respect everyone's gender identity I thought it was the male parts that go inside the female? Now I am confused.

The male looking part actually has a female interior. This is one of the problems of connector terminology. Wait till you get to penetrators ! Or MIL-SPEC connectors.

My sound card it max'ed out and KZread is max'ed out still so low volume that I can't understand it. Why on earth would Renogy waste their time and reparation making something like this. For goodness sake at least check you work for quality, before posted it. Like you panels but this is pretty bad.

Hello, thank you for your attention. The installation of Rego batteries is even simpler, as the interconnecting wires between the four 100AH batteries can be omitted.

FAIL! WHERE is the plastic "bushing" that comes with the MC4 connectors??? Flat side toward the connectors or away from the connectors. I will not by Renogy products because of such a basic fail. Rich Solar, here I come. Looking to 700w of solar and you will not get my business.
