What do you think about this idea when hanging it the wall: In order for the wall to be more visible, I plan to saw off the lower half of the thin plate, or basically the plate BELOW where the shelf is placed. This would make the cabinet blend well with the wall color. The reason I am not simply avoiding the thin plate all together is because I still need it to cover the suspension rail, and perhaps drill screws into its two holes. That's why it will still be there ABOVE the shelf. What do you think? Will it work?

That’s actually a great idea. You’ll need to somehow glue or nail that top part of the back panel. Otherwise it will just simply fall down.

@@h-o-w-t-o Yes, I was thinking just a nail on each side into the back panel grooves, right behind the shelf. And I would probably also need to paint these visible grooves, especially when having a black cabinet. Or do you have any other suggestions? Speaking of visible grooves and holes, are there any good (black-colored) plugs to hide the many small round shelf holes?

Black paint for the groove should work. Just protect the surface of the shelf with painters tape before painting. If you really want to hide them I would try black caulking like amzn.to/3Haj5Lt . It is silicone so it will never crack and if you apply it nicely, the groove will be hardly noticeable. Never used any kind of covers for those round holes to be honest. Apparently they sell these amzn.to/3Lrs9xR (make sure to order the right size) I suggest installing the shelf unit first and then progress with improvements as needed.

@@h-o-w-t-o Black-colored silicone might work! Excellent tip. As for the holes, IKEA has their "VARIERA" cover caps. And I know this is question for IKEA (still waiting for their reply) but do you think it's possible to buy the thin panels separately, in case I wanted to change back or even just change the height of the shelf?

Didn’t know they had those. Thanks)) No way they will sell you back panels separately. It comes as a set all together. Let me know if you somehow succeed with this)
