I think just knowing when to walk away from your next car deal if it’s not good is the best habit to get into. Who cares if you wasted the dealers time anyways, they probably have other deals lined up that you didn’t even know about. Just be patient until you find the right deal!

In my state the doc fee has to be what it actually costs to print those documents. However, the AG has given dealers a sweetheart deal to never investigate unless the doc fee is over $200. So all doc fees are always $200 and no dealer ever wants to get rid of that. So when negotiating I tell them I want an additional $200 off to offset that nonsense and they can keep that doc fee line item on the sheet.

The doc fee is going to vary from state to state, but once a dealer charges it to one customer legally they have to charge it to every single customer so that is the only fee that you will not be able to negotiate however, you might be able to reduce the sell price to offset the doc fee.

@TheDealershipLife license and title fees with the state are done electronically through the dealership without having to go to the dmv. Some dealerships charge more than $150. WHY WAIT to go through an hour of sales talk to find out if they’ll remove the fees or not?? So if I spend an hour driving to the dealership, hopefully, they’ll remove their greedy fees? Nahh, I ask them upfront over the phone and if they refuse then “Bye, bye.”

Doc fee over 100 is too much. Deals with $100 doc fees are a penny a dozen here. So, while 400 is indeed too much, so is $100.01 doc fees. Technically correct that 300 is too much. And no, it isn’t my job to pay more to go to “the girls in the back”. I will pay the 100 doc fee. Y’all can do whatever you want.

Tell them you’re not paying for any of that stuff. I did that during the height of this fake car prices stuff. I’m sure you can do it now. ….paying someone to wash their own brand new vehicle, so that they can sell it to you. Paying someone to deliver a vehicle to themselves, so that they can sell it to you. You’re crazier than an outhouse rat.
