Info from technical white paper on epoxy grout. When cleaning the grouted floor, be sure to use plenty of cold water (to prevent quick set up) mixed with a few drops of Dawn dish soap. It is critical to remove all haze immediately. Dawn works well because it contains surfactants that have an affinity to the epoxy resident contained in both the epoxy and the water used to clean up the haze. This allows the haze to bond with the water and wash away easily with a cleanup sponge and microfiber towel. It is extremely difficult to remove haze otherwise. The grout cures unlike cement grout, which can be adversely affected by using too much water. You cannot use too much of this soapy solution cleaning epoxy grout.

Used your video to relieve some of my stress for doing my frist grout, which was an epoxy grout. I was really nervous cause the guys at the shop said it was really hard. There was a plan A and a plan B and so much prep and hard work, even had a partner to hand me things like a physician. Then I began. Added the grout and then BAM. All plans out the window and worked faster than I ever have. This stuff doesn't want to spread and really doesn't come of with the sponge very easily. In the end though, success! With how easy you made this look, I know you are a pro!

From a professional. Skip the pour soap directly on tile. Soap mixed with epoxy is a terrible idea. If that was the case they would have a part a part C. LOL Try putting the smaller epoxy bucket in a larger bucket of ice next time. Doubles if not triples working time and clean up is the same finishing with a drag of wet micro cloth dipped in soapy water. Much Much larger areas can be done and you don't have to rush. Just not a fan of misinformation

Not necessary wetting the floor... If you use a power saw to cut cement board (Durock or Hardie Backer) the dust will clog pores. Hardie backer has dust on it from the factory. A wet mixed thinset can help resolve this problem, (wet mortar causes problems on walls.) Not much experience with epoxy as a mortar, but i know the surface needs to be dry.

If you google epoxy grout dish soap you will find a technical white paper put out by custom building products. The file name is "epoxy_grout_wp102.pdf". They specifically talk about using Dawn as a release agent. Plus some tips on extending pot life. (freezer, small clumps etc) Don't get too stuck in the weeds about epoxy grout bonding if its a new tile job. You are basically packing glue that turns into a rock in your grout lines. If you are regrouting with some tiny thin grout lines then you might have issues and need to be a bit more judicious with the soap. Do NOT let the water just dry on your tile. They glue remnants are suspended in the water. Go buy a pack of paper towels and dry it off. Your tile should feel like a brand new tile. If it doesnt then rewash and rewash until it does. You cant overwater an epoxy grout joint. Just be careful of scrubbing the lines, they will stay soft and you can damage them. I am not a professional just someone who has used it before and seen the pitfalls and found solutions (read: others solutions on the web) that worked.

Now the question: I didn't know the difference between sanded and unsanded grout until right now. So I've used an UNsanded grout on my floor now. The gaps are small 1/8th inch and i've installed it on cement board that's screwed and mortared to the subfloor so it should be stable... i think. IS there a risk that the grout will crack in the short term?

That all depends on the tile size the product you used to install the temp and how clean it was and if you used water before installing the tile and what kind of deflection you will get. In short maybe. If it does grab some epoxy and it will be a thing of the past. Cheers!

Hi Jeff, I have enjoyed all of your videos and straight forward approach to doing the home improvement work yourself. Your channel helped me get through 2020 as Ibecame interested in comparing your experiences and tweaks compared to my experiences I've gained being a GC in CA. I'm the last Contractor in a 75 year family business with zero complaints on our work my family has done in the commercial and residential business. One question on this epoxy tweak of yours that I never knew about till now is, does it work with pebble floors in showers with their narrow to super wide grouted areas? 2nd question, do you advise using your hand as per the video to lightly smear the liquid soap or would using a sponge, towel or other device be better to use to evenly lightly spread the liquid soap? My concern is lessening the chance of the liquid soap weeping into the grout lines, but maybe this concern is misplaced after reading your replies to previous posts. Please let me know. Thank you again, or as they say in Canada,"cheers."

Can the mixed product be preserved? The 11 lb can says 60 minutes, but seems a bit vague. It says "mixture life 60 minutes". Does that mean all must be used up in 60 minutes, or just that it will harden to surface on 60 minutes and the rest can be preserved in an airtight container?

Hi, can I use epoxy grout at color (grey) to replace the white cement (or tile adhesive ... I don t know what it is) that the contractor placed where tiles were cut to accommodate the pipes coming from the floor. there is about 4-5 cm gap filled with "cement"

"To minimize epoxy haze, wipe the tile down with a solution of water and a few drops of Dawn® dish soap prior to grouting. This solution acts as a grout release to help prevent resin from sticking to dry tile, thereby making it easier to fill the grout joints and minimizing the residue on the face of the tile. The use of a microfiber towel to remove the final grout film during clean-up will greatly reduce the amount of haze. "

I did this today, using the soap...it definitely sped the job up...but...I used a dark grey epoxy and the soap turned into soapy/bubbly water...the bubbles have left small slightly white patches in the joint. Not enough for me to not recommend the technique though...but I wouldnt use the soap on another dark/black grout.... Great tips man, keep it up!! 👍👍👍

Hi Jeff, I have a fine sandstone shower floor (porous initially but well sealed now) I want to use epoxy /kerapoxy for endurance and water proofing but the surface is naturally split / riven. How do I ensure I can get the grout off the tiles afterwards? It was hard enough getting keracolour off riven slate tiles. It looks easy on a polished surface but textured.. something a whole lot more daunting!

thank you this is interesting trick but the fact that soap prevent the epoxy from sticking the the face of the tile which makes cleaning easy also works against us because it will do the same thing to the grout line and prevent adhesion because its very hard to not get any soap inside the groutlines once you start grouting

Also, you said there is a special grout for doing tiles with 16th inch grout lines. I am redoing the grout in such tiles and would like to know what type of grout to use? Finally, when I redo the tile corner or tile to expoxy shower pan, I think I saw in one of your videos that you would regrout these joints and then finish over with a bead of silicone. Is that correct? I see some who just use only the silicone bead in these joints.

Hi Jeff, just viewed your tutorial. Great video. I've never used epoxy grout so like many others this is new to me. I do have some questions: 1) does the unused portion grout harden if not used can it be reused the next day to continue the job. 2) Can small portions of the grout and epoxy be mixed and used instead of mixing the entire contents. Getting ready to repair/replace the grout on my home floor therefore any feedback is appreciated. Any comments from viewers that have used this product also welcomed. Thanks.

That v groove is all you need to add new grout? I get epoxy can be added onto existing grout and doesn't need as much depth in the joint as traditional cement based grout but just making sure. Also the v groove grout rake seems like it would've scrape the sides of the tiles once you get to a certain depth.... Causing chips

This is textbook on exactly what you shouldn't do, you must have a dry joint and contact area per ansi and tcna standards, you can use soapy water but only after you've applied the grout to the joint, doing it this way will created pockets of failed adhesion and ultimately result in failure down the line, this would never fly if you got inspected

I doubt he is a Mapei certified installer. That is the problem, everybody can expert and experience. Putting soap, soapy water or water into the grout line just before you apply the grout is, at best weaken the bond. This video author has taken too much liberty or creativity on the soap, which was meant for clean up only.

@@chuncham1 that much is true, however whenever possible you should avoid weakening the bond between your substrates, and there's is no real way to know how far it's being weakened given how many variables there are, it's far better and safer to simply wipe on a grout release prior to installation

Outstanding tutorial Sir. I'm attempting to revive my 60 year old kitchen tile and thought, erroneously, that painting was the solution - it is not. Before I found your video I was influenced by other YT videos that recommended the paint method. So I spent a bank and bought all the materials and began applying it to a sample area. I quickly realized the paint didn't adhere well and the result looked like ass - pardon my French. I know this is an older video but do you still recommend this method for renewing old grout, or is their a more efficient and effective one? Some people on the inter-web are using an epoxy grout with caulking gun which, on the surface, looks like a cleaner application process. Your thoughts? Semper Fidelis, Ken USMC (retired)
