    I always learn so much from watching your videos. It confirms a lot of what I've always believed watching good shadetree mechanics building engines without having a machine shop at their disposal. Somehow things seemed to work out well regardless. I also agree about the kibutzers. Everybody is an expert and nothing you do is right, and that applies to everything from body work to engines to cameras (one of my things) to even how I plant my flower bulbs. Wrong wrong wong and I'm going to hell for not seeking their advice and doing it their way. Except for the slight problem where they don't pay my bills and don't get a vote in how I do things.

    You've got the right idea (you didn't need me to tell you,lol). The engine "experts" will almost ALWAYS tell you you CAN'T. My engine machinist here in Alabama is age 82 & built race engines for NASCAR star Bobby Allison. I learned to make up some "lingo" required with every job i give him, like "How far in the hole is it ?" (#1 piston at TDC, usually .050 on the smog era RB engines.BTW...those #452 heads,with mild porting are excellent street/strip.

    11 years ago I bought a bunch of low low miles Itasca motorhomes with 440's in them. Everybody told me I was crazy giving 500-1000 dollars for these motorhomes that nobody would want even if I di fix them up. Within 3 years they were gutted. I now have a very awesome 45' container that I dub the displacement museum. We have come up with all sorts of things to get people scratching their heads. I have a 1981 chevy caprice with a 440 in it.

    That’s fantastic! I love a good motorhome 440. I was scoring them already pulled for $200-300 for years. I actually just found a motorhome donor myself today! It’s at the junkyard, and it’s kind of amazing because the yard said they’d only take it if the body was fully stripped… so the people did that, but it still has rusty steel framework in the shape of a motorhome body. I think it’s going to become a ramp truck.

    Cool video! Actually those M440 engines used the 440 Six Pack Magnum cam grind that had the 3 bolt drive gear and low taper lifters. I had a couple for the standard rotation engines (Left Hand or CCW). When you talk about boat or Marine engines the direction the engine rotates is viewed from the flywheel side. It would be opposite looking at the front. So on a standard rotation engine which is LH or CCW at the flywheel, the pulleys and belts turn CW viewed from the front. I had a chance to get an NOS steel marine crank once. It was nice, probably just a level below a 6bbl crank.

  • @briang4470
    @briang447011 ай бұрын

    Marine engines are usually high nickel, extra thick castings which is nice, however I highly suggest staying away from any used marine engine that were ran in salt water, only buy/use ones that had a closed loop cooling system (meaning it had regular coolant in the engine that is cooled with a external heat exchanger that is salt water cooled) or ones ran in fresh water only. Ones that have been used in salt water have a bad habit of having severe rust in the water passages and usually all the water ports get pitted really badly on the surfaces which can cause leaks and issues in the future, also a lot of the bolt holes and threads will usually get Soo rusty that you'll have to chase all the threads in the block and have to usually repair several holes as well. Also look any used marine engine over for freeze cracks, that is very common to find as well.

  • @DeadDodgeGarage

    @DeadDodgeGarage

    11 ай бұрын

    Yep. This one came with the closed cooking system heat exchanger tank still attached, or we wouldn’t be here… even so, it pretty obviously ate some water at one point or another, and the outside of the block is just awful in places.

    The internet/comment section experts, while they may be very capable builders, probably have a garage queen build that will never see the light of day. They'll talk a huge game among the public and at meets or shows, but the build will always be "not ready for the street. I'm not going to put it on the road until it's ready." Meanwhile, people like you and me will be out enjoying ourselves driving around in "jalopies". Also, it's just typical gate keeping by them. Make it sound so difficult, that only the very smartest can enjoy putting engines, etc. together.

    😄I always enjoy your humor.... I do have a serious question though. Did you remove a water pump and housing from this engine and if so, what differences did you see from a normal clockwise pump?? I ask because I've always wanted to use a reverse running water pump so I can use the space of the fuel pump for an A/C compressor and keep the alternator where it belongs and NOT have to deal with an extra idler for the belt.. Serpentine belt, preferably...

  • @DeadDodgeGarage

    @DeadDodgeGarage

    Жыл бұрын

    I’m not using that housing so I didn’t bother removing the pump. I actually hadn’t thought of that! It must be a reverse rotation pump as it was driven conventionally off of the crank. There was also an external pump for moving raw water through a heat exchanger, which also would have been reverse rotation.

    Since the cam spins the opposite way on this marine application, are the drive gears cut reverse too? The distributor/oil pump drive spins in a way that forces the cam to the rear of the engine. Thrust surfaces are on the block and the back side of the cam drive gear. Just curious if the gear drive is cut different to keep the rearward force on the cam.

    A small block distributor being used on a reverse rotation 440? An early hemi 331-392 would be more likely if a spacer is involved. Both are for made for clockwise distributor rotation. The "early hemi" has a longer shaft going to the oil drive. The small block would need the shaft extended to reach lower.

  • @DeadDodgeGarage

    @@auteurfiddler8706 interesting. Yes, this would be great information. I would say that the spacer in the big block to accommodate the other distributor was about half an inch taller. I don't think it would be a big deal to install the RB distributor shaft into a clockwise distributor, but I'm guessing using a spacer and an off-the-shelf part was cheaper and easier for the marine conversion company.

  • @auteurfiddler8706

    @auteurfiddler8706

    @@DeadDodgeGarage Spacers are sold to allow a 440 distributor to be used in a 383/400. The spacer is a stepped cylinder that goes above the 400 block beneath the bottom of the round part of the 440 distributor. I saw a video where a guy was working with a reverse rotation engine and the timing was getting way off. It seems the reverse rotation distributor had a screw on bottom piece. As the engine rotated it tightened. But he converted it to clockwise rotation and now , after the conversion, the normal rotation was making it unscrew, messing up the spark timing.

    I think I am. Sometimes I’m not so sure. Like today, huffing paint and bad gas fumes. Haha.

    If it works is it really a dumb idea that's what you need to ask people whenever you're doing this stuff and people say you won't never run or I won't never work I've heard it all my whole life

    I seen u.t.g get told he doesn't know what he is doing by some special kind of person... People don't understand just how much you can get away with on a old motor

    Exactly. And as I’ve said, he is one of my bigger mentors on this. That and experience - I was getting acceptable results long before I had half a clue. I have at least half of a clue now. 😅

    Ok I am a cheap bastard. I am actually the chairman of the cheap bastards club in my area. I love using perfectly serviceable old parts as opposed to buying new. I even prefer to buy used parts before buying new. But you have really crossed over the line on this build. Yikes !
