Excellent Video! Thank you for demonstrating the head hold and pointing out the dangers with tilting the head back too far. Good to see a demonstration of how you can take your time and administer the total dosage in small increments as opposed to shoving it all in as quickly as possible which is often advocated. Lol 😹 We are giving my kitty oral meds in syringes. I just had to laugh when you said it is a massacre when you do it. I think many owners would say that word is pretty good to describe it.

This was so helpful! I've been struggling to give my cats any kind of medication. I've never had issues with my previous kitties, so I was really lost when I got my boys. Thanks so much for this video!

Thank you your instructions worked well I was nervous that she was going to aspirate when I gave her the Pedialyte.

When giving liquid medication to my cats, I divide the dose into two or three parts, and use two/ three syringes. I find that my cats are less stressed with the smaller doses given a few times, rather than 1 big dose. There is less spitting out of the medicine, and therefore less wastage. When trying to give the liquid medicine in one big dose, the syringe sometimes gets stuck when trying to push the medicine out, only for all of it to come out and surprising the cat. With smaller doses, you have better control of the syringe, and it is less messy. Always give your cats pets and cuddles and comforting words before and after giving them their medicine, to calm them down. If you are stressed, they will know and get worried, but if you bring a calm energy, they tend to relax. It takes some practice, and lots of patience.

It's funny when you look at the date and then reply, but oh well we all come across this in our lives at one point or another. I was instructed to give my cat 0.45 just wondering if you feel that was a lot with your cat? Also, my cat no longer wants to sit with me due to the fact that I am the enemy now, :(

@@iamric23 Hi there 🙂 Yes, 0.45 ml is a lot. My cats can't drink all of that in one go. If I tried to do it, they would spit most of it out and karate kick me in the chest lol. What I do now, is try to give 0.1 to 0.15 at a time; don't rush it. Firstly, I hold my cat by the scruff so they can't move; I might have to lift my cat a bit so that they're on their hind legs, and I can administer the medicine at a comfortable level for me. With the other hand, I put the syringe next to their mouth, and they usually will open their mouth a bit when I do that. Sometimes I gently pry open the side of their mouth with the syringe. When their mouth opens slightly, I aim the syringe at the roof of their mouth and press. I do this using 2-3 syringes with 0.1 - 0.15 in each syringe so that I don't have to worry about giving too much in one go. If your cat gets stressed after the first syringe, give them their space and try again after a few minutes. I used to give my cats their meds in the bathroom with the door closed so that they couldn't escape. It took me a few months to figure out how to give meds to my cats, as each one of them is different; some are.cool and very trusting, some of them are more resistant; some can just sit down on all fours while I give them their meds, others I have to hold by the scruff. @@hayatie He has chronic renal disease at this point, he is around 19. The doctor realizes that this medicine is just giving him a quality of life at this point. I am also giving him crushed up pills twice a day to deal with his thyroid condition. He hates this oral even though it taste like vanilla.

@@iamric23 I'm sorry, it must be rough for you and your cat *hugs* You must love him very much. I don't have cats that old yet, still a few years away. You know your cat best, so I hope you find a way to feed him his meds without resistance from him. I guess I should post videos of me giving meds to my cats. I came here pissed off at the other videos showing the most chill cats I've ever seen just letting people easily place the syringe in the corner of their mouth and give the meds. They barely had to fucking hold the cats. Who the hell does that help? lol

Thank you so much for this video!! I had to end up wrapping my cat in a towel, because she absolutely hates taking her medicine. But this was extremely helpful advice. No more scratched arms! And I can be confident my cat will get better quickly now that I don't have to struggle with giving her medicine :)

My prima donna er... Cat just received his first dosage of anti-seizure medication. It was a fight for the ages. Little does he know he gets it 3 times a day from now on, every 8 hours...for life. Buckle up little buddy.

My cat is old and savvy. He fights me tooth and nail. If only I had a vet technician next to me who could help me hold him down.

I found the best way to give my cat liquid medicine is to take him into the bathroom, where he has nowhere to run, back him into a corner, scruff him, and administer. He hates it but he gets his dose.

I have a small kitty girl, she's vert lightweight. My vet recommended Flagyl, one quarter morning another quarter at night, to treat her blood in the feeces. So, I wonder if anyone can comment on that...

That did not go too well. Cat selection is important in these demos. But reality is something we should get used too and not ignore it.

I have to wrap my cat up in a towel, but after her reaction to the medication is harsh on her. She foams up at the mouth and strings of drool starts coming out her mouth. I tasted this new medication first it taste horrific. Is okay to use water after to wash her mouth out?

My cat writhes, screams, claws and bites me. However I hold her, it’s impossible to give it. It takes hours.

More helpful to do a video of injecting liquid meds solo as not everyone has someone who can help.

My cats got prescribed the same medicine. My 4 month old kitten drinks the medicine like it's nothing. As for my 2 year old cat...oh boy. She acts like if it's going to kill her and spits it out everywhere. And the kittens medicine was free but my 2 year old cats medicine was $130.

I watched from another video of a vet that this is because they didn't like the taste and as a result salivates and sometimes even foam up. This can be minimized by giving the liquid at the third back of their tongue where they'll taste it less.

Give it more at the back of his/her mouth and hold their muzzle closed after administering. Rub their throat to aid with swallowing.

Rub his throat until he swallows. Do this repeatedly and it becomes more difficult for him to gag medication up or foam it out. You can also chase the medication with a little bit of water if you're careful to avoid aspirating the cat.

My cat growls the whole time & spits it out :( So brutal.... I dont know what to do. I guess I have to be more stern and .. make him swallow it..

My cat grinds her teeth when i give her medicine

A couple of days ago as I was sleeping before work, my cat had been inside for several hours. All of the sudden right before work i'm awoken by the pitiful sounds of him crying and quickly I was shocked to find that he can't seem to use at least 1 of his back legs. Being all tied up in car expenses and just not having all the money for a vet i've just been taking EXTRA-care of him. He's calmed down a lot more on trying to move around so he's been crying much less. I cannot tell if his legs are even slightly better yet, but one thing that's been really worrying me is that he hasn't eaten or drank anything since. Long story short if anyone knows what could be going on please let me know. This video helped me tremendously as i've at least been trying to force water down his throat since he wont drink it. I'm very happy this has helped me so I can at least make him drink some water.. Also my sister told me pure honey is healthy for cats, is this true? In small doses of course.

You assume I have the money for the exam and whatever treatment it takes. This is why I posted it here, at least to ask.. As an update on my cat, he's no longer in constant pain, he's eating and drinking fully again and can actually use his back legs. His right back paw though is the last bit that worries me as he seems to limp on it slightly, and his paw is curved in like a monkeys knuckle when he walks on it, but so far he's only gotten better.

@@Aerophina girl, there must be some rescues in your neighborhood to help you with expenses. I've been flat out in debt broke and still got my kitties the help they needed through the help of donations from local cat lovers and the vet. This sounds very serious. I hope your kitty is doing okay now but next time find a way to pay for a visit. Vets offer payment plans too or CareCredit 🙄

@@klutzmuffin Not eligable for CareCredit, I tried. He's fine though so it's alright. I was just in a tight spot moneywise. If it happened now, i'd be able to afford a vet, but thankfully he's completely back to normal.

Naturally Nzuri No. Not all cats will take pills - mine won't. And not all pills can be crushed; please don't crush a med unless you are sure it is ok to do so without affecting the efficacy of the drug.

Putting a cat's medication on food can make them refuse to eat in the future and is strongly discouraged. Only select flavorless medications can be given this way.

Giving a cat liquid medicine is a lot harder than the vet makes it sound. There needs to be a better way

the medicine gets wasted it the cat spits it out and I get butchered all the time. The cat does karate on me and even his back legs will scratch me. he keeps killing me. it's hard to feed antibiotic to the cat it's like fighting ninjas. 😫😭

Give the liquid medication a little bit at a time. Start with a quarter of the meds first, if not give a bit less in the syringe. That way you have more control of the medicine and less wastage. Always give your cat cuddles before and after giving the medicine. I hope this helps. Let me know how it goes ❤

It must be terribly stressful for both of you *hugs* When giving the medicine, what I meant to say was, just have a little bit of the meds in the syringe at a time. I usually use 4 syringes so that a quarter of the meds would be in each syringe and I don't lose count of how many times I've given the meds (My vet gives extra syringes). I gently point the syringe at the side of my cat's mouth; usually they would open their mouth slightly, and I inject the meds into their mouth, pointing at the tongue and not directly down their throat. The amount is so little they would have no time to resist lol. If they start to get irritated, I give them some space and come back a few minutes later. I'm always calm when giving my cats their meds. When I'm calm, they're calm, because cats can sense our energy. I talk to them as to why I'm giving them their meds, and that I love them, and I praise them all the time when I'm giving them their meds. This way, my cats associate meds as something good, rather than something threatening. Always give cuddles with the meds. I hope your cat will come home soon. I hope you are getting some support during these challenging times. I had a few cats with CKD before, it was rough. Sending you and your cat lots of love ❤❤❤❤❤

Wow, this was a horrible example. They agitated the poor guy by manhandling his head for a minute before rushing to jam the syringe in his mouth. If they had just chilled out and done it calmly, they could have gotten all the medicine in one or maybe two tries. Instead they took like 5 tries. Fortunately this cool little dude was very forgiving.

She too rough and mean to this cat she should be more gentle
